The interesting and critical intersection between ROI and culture.
Return on investment (ROI) and safety are often viewed in isolation from the rest of an organization, but for safety to positively impact culture, it needs to be incorporated throughout all levels of an organization. Questions such as, “How much have we spent on safety equipment, claims, safety personnel, technology and certifications?” are often asked alongside the competing question of, “Did we spend less than last year?” as a measure of success.
Although ROI is important as it relates to safety, there are challenges with the concept, starting with being disconnected to actual risk levels in the organization. This in turn can misinform future budget and resource discussions as well as serve as an unintended cultural barrier between a workforce that knows the most about work performance and organizational leadership with the resources and authority to enable safer work to happen.
