Years in the Industry: 20 years

Previous Experience: I started in the industry as a classified automotive account executive at the Press-Enterprise in Riverside, California, and moved to the Santa Barbara News-Press to be the major/national accounts, digital and commercial print manager. From there, I moved to Minnesota where I worked for the Sun newspaper group in various roles: as publisher, general manager, digital, national, commercial print and marketing manager.

What I like most about my job: I enjoy finding solutions for our advertisers. Companies have so many options and people coming at them all the time. I love the ability to go to a customer who trusts us with solutions that will fulfill all their marketing needs with one contact point.

What's the greatest opportunity for newspapers in the future? Audience! Keep preaching our audience; no matter what, we will always be relevant with the vast audience we serve in both print and digital.

Want to reach skeptics? Researchers suggest leaving the term ‘climate change’ out of some news coverage

If newsrooms want climate science skeptics to read and share news about climate change, researcher Renita Coleman recommends they do this: Leave the terms “climate change” and “global warming” out of their coverage.

“Research seems to indicate those are trigger words for skeptics,” says Coleman, a journalism professor at the University of Texas at Austin. “This is what we found
would trigger them to stop reading and instantly become hostile, [believing] ‘Oh, that story is biased or that media organization is biased.’”

Coleman is the lead author of a new paper that investigates strategies to help journalists reach people who distrust science. She and her colleagues conducted an experiment that indicates small changes in how journalists cover climate change have the potential to elicit substantial changes in the way skeptics engage with the news.
