The Sun is Up—One Minister's Awakening
to Racial Reconciliation
A CBFNC Webinar
Presenter: Martha Kearse | September 10 | 11:00 a.m.– noon
Follow Martha's journey of coming to understand what the true issues are that keep white Christians from understanding, and offering justice to, black people. Learn how the theology of hospitality can help us to move forward in understanding where it is that we have broken faith with our black brothers and sisters, and where we can change our own behaviors and attitudes to make things better.

As of April 2018. Martha has been the pastor of Peakland Baptist Church, Lynchburg, VA. Before that, she served on the ministerial staff of St John's Baptist, Charlotte from 2001-2018. Martha received her M.Div. in Pastoral Studies from the School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University in 2007, where she was a CBF Leadership Scholar, and was ordained by St. John’s Baptist Church that same year. In 2017, Martha completed her Doctor of Ministry degree at Gardner-Webb University, writing her doctoral paper on racial reconciliation and the theology of hospitality.
A free copy of Martha's book will be given to three registrants at random!

Elevating Preaching Conference
Leading from the Pulpit
September 16, 2019
Goodson Chapel of Duke Divinity School
Hosted by CBFNC and Duke Divinity School
REGISTRATION ENDS SEPTEMBER 11

Featured Speakers
Amy Butler, Kate Bowler, Greg Jones,
and Naomi Tyler-Lloyd
The pulpit at Whaleman’s Chapel in  Moby Dick  “was in the likeness of a ship’s bluff bows, and the Holy Bible rested on a projecting piece of scroll work, fashioned after a ship’s fiddle-headed beak.” When the preacher ascended into the lofty pulpit, rather than climbing a set of stairs, he rose in sailor-like fashion by means of a rope ladder. It is a powerful image of the Word proclaimed from the pulpit as the leading edge of the church.

This year’s theme for Elevating Preaching is “Leading from the Pulpit.” We have a remarkable program with sermons from the Rev. Dr. Naomi Tyler Lloyd, pastor of Trinity Baptist Church in Bronx, New York, and the Rev. Dr. Amy Butler, recently of Riverside Church in New York City. Duke Divinity Dean L. Gregory Jones and Professor Kate Bowler will deliver lectures on the theme during the meeting. Come join us in the elevation of preaching on September 16. Registration ends September 11. For more information, visit our website .

& November 18–21, 2019 (Eagle Eyrie Conference Center)

CHC presents S.T.E.P.™ (Strategic Transition Education Program)- the next generation in interim ministry. This training is based on the principles developed by Russell Crabtree in Transition Apparitions: Why Much of What We Know about Pastoral Transitions Is Wrong . Crabtree uses an evidence-based approach that shows a one size-fits-all approach ignores the uniqueness of each congregation. Learn more and register here !
