It’s been a busy fall for the IDA council. It was wonderful to see so many of you in Toronto at IDC’s Inaugural Design Symposium. I’ve been told as many as 20% of the attendees were from Alberta, and it showed! The theme was the value of design and so many inspirational speakers and insightful talks made it well worth the trip.
I encourage everyone to attend next year’s event in Vancouver as it’s a wonderful opportunity to connect with designers across the country, build your network and grow as a designer.
Back at home, I also had the chance to connect with members as we hosted our annual Urban Encounters trade show in both Edmonton and Calgary. This year we added a few new perks for members and attendees and we hope to continue to make improvements for next year’s show. If you have any feedback, please get in touch as this show is for you and we want to know what you think!
The second annual MASI Awards took place in Regina in October and several IDA members took home some hardware! Be sure to check out the links below for photos of all these events.
Speaking of photos, I hope everyone took the opportunity to get to know all the
2018/19 council members in our recent social media posts called “
The Who”, the brain child of our Darren Gee and his Marketing and Communications committee. His committee also have a few new and exciting events to look forward to in the next few months, especially targeting our intern members. Stay-tuned!
Coming up this week we have BUILDEX in Calgary and before you know it Santa will be in the malls! Here’s to a productive November!

As qualified design professionals, we are key contributors to sustainable, healthy, and economically viable spaces. Our scope of work spans construction and project management, design conceptualization, sustainability, health & wellness, and product and material selection. On top of this, we’ve taken on the complex role of “corporate strategist” consulting on productivity, culture, branding and more. As the demands of the market change and industry continues to evolve, we must ask ourselves how do we define our position in the building industry and advocate for a scope of work that enables us to best service our clients?
