Illustrating Price Variation in California

In this recent post in the APCD Journal, Senior Data Science Consultant Sarah Lindberg used RAND’s hospital price transparency data to compare California's commercial hospital payments to the national experience. The data illustrates that median payments in CA were about 3.5 times higher than what Medicare would have paid and more expensive than the national average. Analyses like these set the stage for further discussion about measurement and monitoring.

Creating open, web-based access to APCD data

As APCDs mature, analytic and public reporting is growing in breadth and sophistication. Senior Consultant Jonathan Mathieu reports on Rhode Island’s progress in providing accessible, timely, and informative data to policymakers, legislators, and state agency programs through web-based, open-access aggregated summary tools. Highlights include the state’s use of widely available service classifications and category names to help users quickly and easily understand variation.

Shaping California's Approach to Measuring Price Growth

In January, FHC’s Mary Jo Condon, Sarah Lindberg, Gary Swan, and John Freedman met with CA’s Health Care Affordability Board to present options for measuring and monitoring hospital price growth, a key legislative direction for the Office of Health Care Affordability.

North Carolina Issues Report on Advancing Primary Care

FHC staff supported North Carolina’s Primary Care Payment Reform Task Force, which the General Assembly charged with defining primary care for the state’s public and commercial payers, inform the creation of a primary care investment target, assess the current state of the North Carolina’s primary care workforce, evaluate primary care spending and identify a data collection strategy, and recommend ongoing activities in this space. FHC team members Gary Swan and Julia Sledzik facilitated Task Force meetings, provided insight from related national efforts, and prepared this newly-released findings report.

Building Foundations for Public Data Access to Health Claims Data

CA HPD Data Governance Committee Meeting – March 2024 – FHC Senior Consultant Jonathan Mathieu assisted in framing meeting content, including consideration of several hypothetical use cases to educate the committee about issues and concerns that may emerge during application review. https://hcai.ca.gov/document/agenda-iv-use-case-scenarios/
