Summer Session Comes to an End
Team Huckabee’s Proud Day festivities included parents, aunties, community friends and even baby cousins!
Team Mount Olive’s site was visited by Mr. Herb Thompson who was inducted into the prestigious Howard University Hall of Fame. Mr. Herb shared with our scholars the many opportunities that Howard University offers as well as the many famous Americans that attended this university.
Team Atlantic Beach had the most creative idea for their Proud Day presentations! Deb Winter, tutor at Atlantic Beach said, "The life-size posters show the way our scholars “wrote their books.” They did the story boarding, and then wrote their ideas on an outline of their bodies. This was particularly effective with some of our English-language learners, and all of the scholars had a great time sharing themselves and their hopes and dreams.” How neat is that!?
The infamous Ed Piotrowski, Chief Meteorologist WPDE NewsChannel 15 paid a special visit to Team Bay Pointe! Ed talked to our scholars about careers as meteorologists and his experiences in the field for 29 years.
Congratulations Betty Shubrick!
This month’s Gold Star Award goes to Betty Shubrick! Betty joined the Freedom Readers’ team as a tutor back in 2012 where she now leads as our South Strand-Outreach Coordinator AND served this summer as Team Leader for our Laurel Woods site. Betty does it all and will be first to step up to the plate to help the organization. Her love and dedication has been a blessing for all these years! Betty, thank you for all that you do!
Monthly Inspiration
"All in all we have thoroughly enjoyed this Summer Session. Once again the MAGIC of Freedom Readers never ceases to amaze me. Scholars who came to the program reluctant and retreating are now reading, writing and speaking in front of a group and seem genuinely happy to do it".
-Carol Hansen, Team Leader Shepherd of the Sea site
"This summer I started volunteering with Freedom Readers. It's a great opportunity to read with, mentor, and tutor young kids in the community."
-John Sumter, Tutor
