There’s nothing quite like a train to bring a nation together. An entrepreneur by the name of Ross Rowland Jr. shared a similar sentiment as America’s bicentennial approached. Inspired by the 1947 Freedom Train, which traveled the country following World War II, the bicentennial American Freedom Train would visit all 48 contiguous United States between 1975 and 1976 as a traveling display of American artifacts and camaraderie. The tour would make stops in 140 communities, with Southern Pacific™ GS-4 locomotive #4449 leading the charge for much of the tour. As we celebrate America’s semiquincentennial and the 50th anniversary of this momentous journey, Bachmann is delighted to bring the spirit of the American Freedom Train to HO scale with this limited-edition collectible train set and range of authentically detailed add-on cars.

NORMAN ROCKWELL'S FREEDOM TRAIN

Bachmann is proud to honor one of America’s most beloved artists, Norman Rockwell, with the Norman Rockwell Freedom Train. In 1941, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt addressed Congress with his hopes for America after World War II, emphasizing a vision of four basic freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. Rockwell painted each of these freedoms as part of his desire to do more for the war effort, naming the series the Four Freedoms. This artwork would help elevate Rockwell to an icon of American culture after being printed in The Saturday Evening Post. In May of 1943, Rockwell joined a combined campaign by the Post and U.S. Department of the Treasury to sell war bonds and stamps through a travelling rail exhibit. The Freedom Train, adorned in a patriotic red, white, and blue paint scheme, rode the rails from September of 1947 to January of 1949 to 16 U.S. cities, highlighting American heritage and the importance of preserving important American documents. 133 items in total were featured on the train, including Rockwell’s Four Freedoms and original versions of the United States Constitution and Declaration of Independence. Every citizen who bought war bonds through the campaign received printed copies of the Four Freedoms in return. The classic artwork’s next stop is your HO scale layout, where Bachmann’s Norman Rockwell Freedom Train embodies the same hopeful message of its namesake.

EMD SD40-2 - MILWAUKEE ROAD #156

The American Freedom Train wasn't the only railroad celebration of America's bicentennial. Many railroads painted locomotives in special commemorative schemes, featuring patriotic colors and bold designs. The Milwaukee Road painted SD40-2 #156 into one such scheme. After many years in service the prototype of this locomotive has once again been returned to this historic livery thanks to efforts by the Midwest Overland Rail Preservation society, making this model appropriate for both 1970s-era and modern layouts.

STREAMLINED OFFSET CUPOLA CABOOSE

Streamlined Off-Set Cupola Cabooses such as the type offered in this series were somewhat latecomers to the market, with this particular smooth-steel design (produced for the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy) entering service in the early 1960s. Designed with an elevated cupola, the cars featured raised seats to allow crews to inspect the train from above while in motion, while the space below provided room for work, cooking, and on longer runs, sleep. The Bachmann Off-Set Cupola Caboose sees the addition of two new road names representing classic paint schemes of the era. These new additions join a variety of road names already available for this fully-built model with metal wheels and E-Z Mate® Mark II couplers.

PCC STREETCAR - SEPTA® #2254

The Presidents' Conference Committee (PCC) Street Cars appeared in the 1930’s designed as a comfortable, quiet, mode of urban transportation. This streamlined design featured fast acceleration and braking and was operated by a single-seated operator. Almost 5,000 PCC’s were built in the United States and some are still in regular service today. The Bachmann PCC Streetcar has been improved to sit lower, as per the prototype, and includes new enhanced details on wheels and truck brakes. It includes a factory-installed 21-pin socket for DCC decoder installation of your choice.
