Freedom in Practice

[3 minute read]

Hello EMCC,

Thank you for joining us over the past five days to mark International Development Week 2024. It has been a pleasure to share the stories of how EMCC friends around the world are contextualizing our theme verse to demonstrate the transformative nature of the gospel in creative ways.

"You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: "Love your neighbour as yourself.” (Gal 5:13-14, NIV)

We hope that you will return to these stories and share them as an encouragement to steward the freedom and abundance we all have in service to others. This exhortation was part of the prayer for those who joined our EMCC Connected Across the Globe event this morning.

We finish this week by sharing one part of the story of how SARA Ministries in Nepal is uniquely serving the holistic needs of children, youth, and young adults in their care through SARA Children's Homes.

May your hear Jesus' voice, as an individual, and as part of your community of followers of Jesus, about how we can co-participate in his larger mission alongside the Global Church,

Director of World Partners, EMCC

One of the SARA's Children's Homes

The EMCC Partner Denomination, SARA Ministries, is a disciple-making movement in Nepal that engages in community development as part of its larger vision to bless communities across Nepal.

One of these components of seeking the common good in their communities has been to care for orphaned and vulnerable children. Our global partner, Tej Rokka, has a unique connection to this work, having shared his own experience as an orphan. The commitment he feels to these children is now embodied by the team that works at SARA Children's Homes - seeking to give over 50 children (aged 4-18) a foundation to build on for all aspects of their lives.

Here is a profile, from Tej, of one of the youth whose home is with SARA.

"Shristi Chaurel is a 14 year old young woman from mid-west Nepal. Her father passed away when she was young. Her family became destitute because they were fully dependent on the father for their financial survival. Her mother struggled with food and all other expenses of the family, but managed to send Shristi to school until she finished in grade four. Her mother, having no further sources of income, worried about Shristi and her future. Known to members of SARA Church, the administration of the Children's Home agreed to provide Shristi with the opportunity to study, and she joined in April 2019.

Since joining the Children's Home, Shristi's grades have improved and the increase in her physical health is evident. She has become a more contented person, and her mother is thankful for the improvements she is seeing. Christi is known for helping others at the home, staying active on her bike and with the friends at the home, and has aspirations to become a teacher. Lastly, she is active in her Sunday school and is now involved in the daily devotion by play the musical instrument. She is learning and practicing Jesus’ love, as well as praying and reading the Bible. We pray for her spiritual growth in faith."
