Keep Maxfield Parrish Safe

A magnificent backdrop designed by art nouveau painter Maxfield Parrish graces the stage of Plainfield, NH's 1846 Town Hall. Fire safety expert Nick Atrim of Middlebury recently spoke there advising local leaders. "We want to prevent any fire opportunity, reduce the risk as far as we can, and put in some sort of early warning detection system," said Antrim. He advised installing sprinklers in high-risk areas and studying emergency response plans. "Whatever you do, do it right."

Beware of American Media

Be wary of believing what you see and read. That was the message of mass communication professor Michelle Amazeen at OSHER in 2022. She warned against falling for "native advertising"—paid content that looks like news. "Advertisers have now colonized many newsrooms and are affecting the agendas that many news consumers are exposed to," she said. "Remember—be a critical consumer of media content."

The dawn of Daybreak

JAM's time machine takes us to a 2020 Hanover Rotary Club speech by Rob Gurwitt, the publisher of Daybreak, the weekday local e-newsletter. "It is a place for straightforward, useful information in a friendly voice that helps us feel connected to the community around us and doesn't waste our time." Launched in 2019 with 25 readers, Daybreak rocketed to 9,300 subscribers in 18 months. "It's me getting up every day and putting together what I think is a mini-magazine. What has surprised and pleased me is people's willingness to send in photos....Daybreak is not in any way, I think, a substitute for a local newspaper," said Gurwitt.
