Let SJB Help Get Your Home Ready for Winter

Top fall/winter prep chores

  • Clean your gutters and downspouts to prevent ice dams that cause roof leaks and foundation cracks.
  • Inspect and tune up your heating system, change or clean your HVAC filters for better efficiency and air quality.
  • Check and seal windows and doors: Look for drafts around your windows and doors. Apply new weatherstripping or caulk.
  • Shut off and drain exterior water lines, disconnect hoses, and cover spigots with insulated covers.
  • Clean and dry patio furniture before storing it in a garage or shed.
  • Drain the fuel to prevent engine damage in any gas-powered lawn equipment.
  • Change the fan direction on your ceiling fans to run clockwise at a low speed push warm air down from the ceiling.
  • Stock up on ice melt, firewood, batteries, and canned goods.
  • Make sure your snow-clearing tools (like shovels or a snowblower) are in working order.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detector and replace the batteries to ensure they are working properly.
  • Use this opportunity to store summer clothes and bring out your winter wardrobe.
