The Forest Preserve recently purchased property in Fremont Township known as the Steffenhagen property for $1.4 million. This will expand Lakewood Forest Preserve. Located on Gilmer Road, it sits less than a mile north of Route 176.
Last spring, the Forest Preserve board approved two other acquisitions at Lakewood: about 74 acres on Gilmer Road southeast of Fairfield Road and a 1.6-acre parcel on the west side of Fairfield Road between Bonner and Route 176.
Lakewood is the largest forest preserve in Lake County, covering more than 2,900 acres with miles of trails, woodlands, prairies, wetlands, and scenic lakes.

| | Passport Event at Fremont Township | | Household Chemical Waste Collection Event | | Shredding Event Scheduled for May 31 | |
We have scheduled a document shredding event for Saturday, May 31 from 8:30 am til 11:30 am . Enter through the highway department at 22376 Erhart Road. If the truck fills earlier than 11:30, the event will end.
You may bring the equivalent of 3 boxes to shred. Staples and paper clips are fine. The most efficient way is to place your items in a paper grocery bag. No plastic bags. To keep the line moving, you will not be able to exit your car and watch the shredding.
This shredding event is for documents only. Please recycle your coupons, magazines and junk mail with your weekly recycling. They will not be accepted.
Pop your trunk and we will take the items. Do not leave your car.
We will not accept any binders or hanging file folders or electronic items because they catch on fire in the truck. If the truck fills up before 11:30, the event will be over.
We look forward to seeing you and appreciate your patience.

Spring has sprung here in Fremont Township! Before we get ahead of ourselves in manicuring our yards, let's consider waiting just a little longer to fire up the 'ole lawnmower and trimmer for a couple of good eco-friendly reasons.
First, we can help early season pollinators by allowing an expanse of yard grass to include a few flowering annoyances ~ dandelions, patches of ground ivy, and native violets ~ for good reason! A lawn allowed to grow for a longer period of time (also assuming no herbicide application) enables both flowering weed and native plant blooms to provide critical early season food ~ both nectar and pollen ~ for pollinators to forage starting in the spring. In addition, grassy areas left to grow longer during the subsequent summer months reduces the number of times gasoline powered lawn equipment is adding noise and exhaust pollution to the outdoor environment.
Infrequent mowing isn't for everyone but for some it is an easy way to better support the natural world. Whether you're a Slow Mow or No Mow kind of gardener, pollinators will thank you, and lawn competition with your neighbor will just have to wait! :-)
