Pastor's Message

"Loving God with Everything"

Dear Fremont Family,

Every fall, we look forward to our annual Stewardship Campaign. The time when we take seriously our commitment to support the ministries of Fremont with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service and our witness. Our theme for this year is, "Loving God with Everything."

In Mark's Gospel, chapter 12, a scribe draws near to Jesus to ask him, "Which commandment is the greatest?" In other circumstances, the religious authorities are often out to trick Jesus, but in this case, this scholar seems genuinely interested in Jesus's response. I love this question. It seems that with everything competing for our time and our attention, it would be a good thing to know what to prioritize. Right? Of all the things we could be/should be doing, what matters most? Consequently, it would seem that once we knew, we would then live accordingly. No? Jesus answers the scribe by quoting the Shema, "Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your mind, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. The second is this: 'you shall love your neighbor as yourself.'" In other words, we are not to hold anything back. Love God (and neighbor) with everything!

The Shema in the Torah is the most central prayer in all Judaism. The prayer is intended to be prayed daily, and it represents a life wholly devoted to God. Shema is the Hebrew word for "listen" or "hear," and it connotes both the meaning of "pay attention," and also, "let the words sink in," Let this teaching, provoke a response in us. In other words, let our hearing be our doing.

I can't wait to consider with you how we will endeavor to love God with everything. I look forward to imagining, conceiving and committing alongside you to loving God with our hearts, our hands, our heads and our human connections at Fremont so that our whole lives reflect our profound love relationship with a God who loves us wholly first.

Our stewardship Sundays will be November 3, 10 and 17. We will ask you to bring your completed pledge cards with you on November 17. May God bless us in this annual and most important endeavor of stewardship.

Grace and peace,

Erin

Where There's a Will- is a group that intends to get our wills/trusts together. We will begin meeting next Saturday, October 5, and discuss all of the important documents we should have together. Future weekly meetings will focus on our aging, memories we want to leave behind, plans for the future and for our funeral. Please join us Saturday, October 5, at 10:30 in the Conference Room.

Sunday Morning Group anyone?

Join me for a three-session Sunday morning book study! Meeting at 9am on Sundays, Oct 20, Nov 3 and 10 in the Conference Room.

This interesting book shares lessons from Native America how to survive the apocalypse with hope.

Join the conversation by watching this video of an interview with the author, and not read the book!

Would you like to talk about this topic, but not on Sunday am? Let me know and I am willing to set up a gathering on Zoom.

Potluck and Asset Map Conversation September 15 -RECAP

Our all-church Conversation and Potluck was another great time to eat and build relationships with each other. We each completed an Asset Map for ourselves, and then in a small group, shared them with each other to help us identify more.

4-H Asset Map

Heart: The things we are passionate about doing, and what stirs us to action.

Hands: What do we have a gift or talent at doing? Things we can teach, or offer in help.

Head: Knowledge and education or a gift of such as math, writing or being able to organize the details.

Human Connection: What are your skills at connecting to others? What you do to participate in community? Loving to talk to strangers, being welcoming, hosting events and parties.

We are called to participate here at Church in ways that use our 4-H assets. When we give from our assets it may be more challenging, but is also the most rewarding.

Choose your Adventure: Where can you participate to use your giftedness?

  • Many of our Small Groups shared about what they are continuing to offer this fall. You can find the list in the Deepening Our Lives section. But there is room for more! Create your own small group.
  • Offer to help support our Community Hub activities. We need people to attend the events so that we are creating the warm welcoming environment that we want to support. We also need those who will set up and clean up, or help organize.

We are all looking forward to seeing the many ways your giftedness can also gift others.

We all love a Potluck. But do we realize that when we get to enjoy a Potluck, that there are those who make it possible? Thank you to Kathy Elliott who organized everything ahead of time, and made sure dishes had a serving spoon, and Robert Greaves, who helped carry coffee down from the Narthex and back up again, and Susan Harwell, who washed all of the silverware and serving items, and the Francis Family, Eddie, RaeAnn, Marcus, Jacob, along with the Howards, Nathan, Astrid, Orlan, and John Shapland, who set up the tables and chairs. The kids were a big help. They moved all of the chairs in their determination to be 'helpful'. And thank you to everyone who stayed and put things away!!

Sweets, Soups & Savories coming November 17

Calling all cooks and bakers….and everyone who enjoys homemade goodies! We have so much to celebrate in our life together at Fremont, and one of our greatest gifts is sharing hospitality with guests and visitors. Sharing conversation with a cup of tea or coffee is a wonderful way to begin building relationships before and after worship. It costs over $1,000 a year for coffee and hospitality supplies, and we have a tradition of raising these needed funds at an annual bake sale.

The sale will take place in the welcome and gathering area following worship on November 17, the day we will also celebrate the close of our pledging season with the consecration of gifts.

Everyone can participate…young, old, and in between; as cooks, consumers, or both. So please mark your calendars now, and plan to take part in this special event. Soups, breads, jam, brownies are always big sellers.  More details to follow! Thank you in advance from your Fremont Congregational Life team!

Community Hub Activity

Fremont: A church moving from being

inside the building to inside the neighborhood.

In a brief consultation with Pastor Erin, we have decided to retire the Burrito Brigade outreach ministry. We are looking to replace it with another outreach of some sort. Blessing bags is on my mind and we can put an FUMC spin on it. So I hope we can explore and develop that for the future. There are plenty of needs but we know we can't do everything but we can do something.

Please plan on our Christmas giving of hats, gloves and socks. You have been so generous with this outreach and we are so grateful for your donations of handmade and store bought items for us to gift.

Blessings to all,

Trudy

Sorry, we don't have a photo church directory. Should anyone be willing to take lead and coordinate a photo directory, we would welcome your leadership!

Current Church Directory!

There are some printed and ready to be picked up in the Narthex. But you can also download here and keep an electronic copy.
