JANUARY 2017
2017:
IT'S GONNA BE A  GOOD YEAR
"At YWCA's across the nation we are working to make the most of this time and push for change, because injustice, violence and inequality are not red or blue issues...they impact every community."
Dr. Dara Richardson-Heron
President, YWCA USA

NEW YWCA  INTERGENERATIONAL LEARNING CENTER FOR CHILDREN TO OPEN IN MIAMI GARDENS

As most of you know, the  YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade has served the county since 1919 , when a small group of influential women used their  time, talents and treasures to plant the seeds of change Having raised over $2,000 in 1919 , those women laid the foundation for a local arm of a global organization  dedicated to empowering those who often live in the margins of society .

With such a foundation, it is not a wonder that the work has been carried forward and expanded to serve hundreds of thousands of women, children and families in the organization's 98 year history. And so it was with confidence that county officials championed  a match grant for the YWCA Miami for $2.5MM ,  to build a new facility that is as colorful, full of life and character as the children, staff and families it will house.
The building, much like the Marta Weeks location in Overtown, Miami, has the YWCA logo placed proudly on its facade.   The windows are colorful and allow for the warmth of South Florida's sun to touch you as you walk through its corridors or sit in its classrooms. The classrooms are especially designed for early childhood program participants, with enticing learning tools placed throughout each room, and even on the carpets. There are also special amenities to facilitate learning beyond the classroom, such as a recording studio, computer clubhouse and expansive multipurpose room.  Both the staff and the students are eager to move into the new facility.

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the YWCA Learning Center for Children will take place on February 13, 2017 at 10:30 a.m., the new center is located at  3468 NW 199 Street. Miami Gardens, FL 33056.

WHAT WE'VE BEEN UP TO @ THE YW
YWCA YOUTH ATTEND PRIVATE SCREENING OF HIDDEN FIGURES FILM

Hidden Figures has taken the box office, award shows and the public by storm. The film highlights the story of the African American, female mathematicians  who played crucial roles in NASA's 1950s space program Project Mercury.  This true story of women of color in the STEMS who participated in a historic event, sheds a light on the importance of representation.  This story goes largely untaught in history books or science classes, and we were honored when a sponsor selected students from the YWCA Miami's Youth Development Programs to participate in a private screening, and Q&A session with real life scientists who are women of color. Our students and their parents were delighted to attend the event where they were also treated to a private theater and concessions.
SUFFOLK VOLUNTEERS WITH YWCA YOUTH
IN  COMPUTER CLUBHOUSE
This past December Suffolk Construction stopped by the YWCA Weeks Center Computer Clubhouse for an interactive experience with the teens and kids. Suffolk's staff showed the youth the proper techniques to install clipboards on the wall of the Clubhouse in order to display their artwork.  In addition to the clipboard installation project, Suffolk team members  worked on an engineering project with the teens, showing them how to build cars with creative objects like straws, candies, pipe cleaners, etc. At the end of the project, they conducted a  contest by racing their "cars" down the hall.
