Breathe PA Brings Tobacco and Nicotine Education to Lower Dauphin School District

Breathe PA’s Tobacco Program Manager, Cat Aranda, and Health Educator, Cortney Schrecengost, recently spent two days in central Pennsylvania providing tobacco and nicotine education at Lower Dauphin School District — a proud Smokeless Saturday partner.

On April 14th and 15th, Cat and Cortney provided age-appropriate tobacco and nicotine education to first grade students at Nye Elementary, 6th-8th grade students at Lower Dauphin Middle School, and health and physical education teachers at Lower Dauphin High School. In total, 768 students and staff received valuable education on the risks of tobacco and nicotine use and the resources available for cessation and prevention.

Changing Trends in Youth Vaping: Insights from Smokeless Saturday

Data from Breathe PA’s 2024-2025 mid-year survey of Smokeless Saturday participants reveals a striking shift in youth vaping behavior. Since 2012, the percentage of students who vape and come from households with tobacco users has dropped from 83% to 50%. This means tobacco and nicotine use is no longer just a behavior passed down at home—it’s becoming more common among students even in households without tobacco use, which raises new prevention challenges.

We’re proud that the Smokeless Saturday program, which provides intensive education and cessation support for students found in possession of tobacco or nicotine products on school property, has been selected for a poster presentation at the National Conference on Tobacco or Health 2025 in Chicago. This national spotlight highlights Breathe PA’s commitment to reducing youth tobacco use and supporting healthier, tobacco-free futures.

Breathe PA Shares Insights on Youth Vaping and Respiratory Health at PSRC West Conference

Breathe PA’s Director of Programs, Becky Kishlock, and Lung Health Program Manager, Kristy Steele, were honored to present at the Pennsylvania Society for Respiratory Care (PSRC)'s West Conference. Their session, “Vaping and Tobacco Use in Adolescents: Understanding the Impact on Asthma and Respiratory Health,” highlighted the growing concern around vaping among young people and its serious implications for lung health — especially for those living with asthma.

We are grateful to PSRC for the opportunity to help raise awareness and advocate for healthier futures for adolescents across Pennsylvania.

Breathe PA Joins the COPD Action Alliance to Advance Lung Health Advocacy

Breathe PA is proud to join the COPD Action Alliance, a national coalition dedicated to improving policy and care for those living with COPD. Our Executive Director, Casey Monroe, recently attended the Alliance’s inaugural stakeholder meeting in Washington, D.C., where member organizations gathered to discuss collaborative opportunities to strengthen COPD policy and promote patient-centered care.

We look forward to working alongside our partners to drive meaningful change for individuals and families affected by COPD.

Honoring Years of Leadership at Breathe PA

This June, Breathe PA will bid farewell to four members of our Board of Directors as they retire from service: Dr. Bruce Bush, Donna Pike, Dr. Sally Wenzel, and Howison Schroeder. In the coming months, we will profile each of these individuals and recognize their contributions to our mission. In this edition, we are pleased to introduce the first two retiring members and honor their leadership and commitment to lung health in our community.

Dr. Bruce Bush

Serving as one of Breathe PA’s most tenured board members, Dr. Bruce Bush has left an indelible mark on the organization’s rich history. Since joining the Board of Directors in the early 1990s, Dr. Bush has held numerous leadership roles, including Board President, and has been instrumental in guiding the organization’s mission and strategic direction. “Bruce’s knowledge of the respiratory health field and focus on patient outcomes has been critical in the organization’s commitment to improving the health and well-being of our communities,” said Executive Director, Casey Monroe.

Beyond his contributions to Breathe PA, Dr. Bush served as Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at Indiana Regional Medical Center from 2001 to 2017. His academic journey began at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, followed by a medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College & Hospital.

Dr. Bush also proudly served in the United States Army, where he was Chief of Internal Medicine and Director of Respiratory Therapy Services at the Uniformed Services Military Medical Complex during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm in 1991.

Breathe PA is deeply grateful for Dr. Bush’s continued dedication and nearly four decades of unwavering support. His advocacy, leadership, and strategic insight have been vital to the organization’s work in promoting and protecting respiratory health.

Donna Pike

As Breathe PA’s longest-serving board member, Donna Pike has been a pillar of leadership and support for the organization. Throughout her remarkable tenure, Donna has chaired several program-specific committees on the Board of Directors, consistently offering valuable guidance and unwavering dedication to advancing Breathe PA’s mission. “Donna’s thoughtful and patient-centered approach is always appreciated. She has been an incredible resource as we continue to offer services to our patients in the more rural communities of western Pennsylvania,” said Executive Director, Casey Monroe.

In her professional role as Manager of Respiratory Care at Indiana Regional Medical Center, Donna has been a key partner in connecting patients with Breathe PA’s resources, including our educational programs and patient assistance initiatives. Her commitment to respiratory health has extended well beyond the boardroom. Prior to her current position, she worked in the Prehospital/EMS division at Indiana Regional Medical Center, serving as an Allied Health Educator and Stroke Program Coordinator.

Breathe PA has been truly fortunate to benefit from Donna’s leadership, insight, and compassion for more than four decades. Her contributions have left a lasting legacy on the organization and the many individuals we serve.
