Bear With Me WA

Once again Farmer Frog & Western Wildlife Outreach teamed up to celebrate Earth Day. This year we were at Sky Valley Education Center in Monroe talking about bears, farming and food. The “Everywhere is Bear Country” activity booklet was a hit. This was a student-led project of the “Bear Team” at the University of Washington for Winter Quarter.

Get your FREE copy by signing up here for the Bear With Me WA Newsletter to download that OR one of our Bear Safety Brochures available in English and Spanish.

Lovestock News

Since the last report in January a lot has happened. The sheep, goats and the livestock guardian dogs were moved to our new location at BearGrass Farm. They settled in well to the big sky and wide-open spaces.

In May we welcomed the first herd of cattle. The lovestock team will be utilizing regenerative agriculture techniques by using a rotational grazing plan with the cattle and the sheep. On Mother’s Day a ram lamb was born and this past week we welcomed our first baby bull or heifer.

We are putting a call out for donations of hog panels, Tposts, or funds to purchase those things. Donate at the link at the bottom of this email or reach out to grow@farmerfrog.org to arrange a time for pickup by us, or drop off by you, of supply donations.

The Cascades Frog

In Washington state the Cascades Frog is found above 2000 feet elevation in the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. They prefer quiet water sources including ponds, lakes, marshes or slow-moving streams. Adults grow to about 3-inches from nose to tail tip. Breeding season runs from March to August after waters thaw out. They hibernate during winter and have been found buried in mud under up to one foot of water.
