The international call came out of the blue.  "Rev. Smith, I am a pastor of a church in Kampala, Uganda.  One of my members attended services at your church last month.  She keeps telling us how we must get involved, and I'm calling to let you know that we have decided to help."

The American pastor vaguely remembered his conversation with the young woman from Uganda, but he did not recall asking for her help.  "You are very kind to offer," responded the American, "but help in what way?"  "To complete your building.  We understand that it is inadequate for your church and that you are trying to raise money to finish it."

EFFECTIVE SHORT TERM MISSION PLANNING WORKSHOP
Done well, short-term mission trips build community and reinforce our connections with God's mission in the world.  Without good planning and execution, however, we can do more harm than good.  In this workshop, Ellen Sherby, Coordinator and Equipping for Mission Involvement at the Presbyterian Mission Agency, will offer practical tools and written resources for your mission trip leaders to focus and pace to learn best practices from one another:
    • Going deeper in an understanding of mission
    • Discerning whether and where to go
    • Elements of a good mission trip experience

ONE-DAY STEWARDSHIP CONFERENCE 
On June 12th the Presbytery of Milwaukee will offer a Stewardship Conference from 5:30 - 9:00 p.m. at Faith Presbyterian Church in Franklin, WI.  Minner Serovy, from the Presbyterian Foundation, and Rhonda Kruse, from the Presbyterian Mission Agency, will facilitate a conversation about creating a culture of generous discipleship and look at practical ways congregational leaders can encourage engagement in the mission of the church.   Register online here or at www.pbymilwaukee.org.

The Synod of Lakes and Prairies and the Presbytery of Milwaukee will be open during the summer Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  If a matter arises that cannot wait until the following Monday, you are welcome to email or call the Presbytery Executive, Rachel Yates, at the office.  All emails and voicemail messages will be forwarded and monitored during Friday office closures.
NEWS FROM THE DENOMINATION
SYNOD OF LAKES AND PRAIRIES EMBRACES MATTHEW 25
INVITATION
  Last week, synod commissioners voted to allow Lakes and Prairies to become a Matthew 25 synod.  Synod Executive Elona Street-Stewart said that while the synod will embrace all three Matthew 25 focus areas - building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism, and eradicating systemic poverty - it's that first item that is drawing the most initial attention.

FOUNDATION ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR CHURCH FINANCIAL LEADERSHIP GRANTS
  Pastors can apply for a grant to pay for half of the cost of attending financial leadership conferences.  The Presbyterian Foundation is organizing and administering the grants.  The deadline to apply is June 15.

Sun Valley Presbyterian Church's Strawberry Festival will take place at the church on Saturday, June 22. From 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. participants can enjoy games, music, raffles, craft items, food, and strawberry ice cream. There will also be a pancake and crepe breakfast and picnic lunch. THE ART OF TRANSITIONAL LEADERSHIP
September 16-20, 2019 at Christ the King Retreat Center, Buffalo, MN
This week-long conference, presented by the Synod of Lakes and Prairies, focuses on learning ministry skills for today's and tomorrow's church pastors, staff, COMs, and congregational leaders. Materials presented will include the basics of transitional ministry, best practices, including how to analyze a congregation's strengths and growing edges, and how to keep moving toward a vibrant future.

WEAR ORANGE WEEKEND
June 7-9, 2019: There's more we can do to stop gun violence
Organizations and individuals around the country are coming together on the weekend of June 7-9 to honor those affected by gun violence in America.

Share your resources! If your church is observing this weekend with prayers, litanies, or sermons on this topic, the Wisconsin Council of Churches would appreciate hearing what you are doing. The WCC is collecting material for a new resource on Faith and Gun Violence.
