FROM RACHEL YATES, PRESBYTERY EXECUTIVE
LIVING ON THE EDGE
We weren't the most promising tenants.  We had no rental history.  New to Boston, I was a law student; my husband didn't have a job yet (a challenge in itself when you don't have an address to put on your application).  We had saved up just enough money to put down as the first and last month's rent and the security deposit.  Every night we stayed in a motel though, we watched those savings dwindle.  It forced us further and further out of town where rents were cheaper, but the cost and time of transportation into town was higher.  We were living on the edge, ready to teeter.  The relief was immense when...(READ MORE)

COVID-19 UPDATE IN MILWAUKEE PRESBYTERY
COVID-19 cases continue to surge in Wisconsin, including in our congregations.  Six of the Presbytery's congregations have had exposures to the coronavirus in worship or ministries, sometimes with staff and sometimes among members.  Over 1/3 of Wisconsinites are testing positive for the coronavirus, and our positivity rate is one of the highest in the country.  We are at far higher community spread rates than when we first closed our church buildings.  Even with masks and social distancing, gathered indoor worship is strongly discouraged at this time.  Our love of God and love of neighbor call us to a season of personal sacrifice for the common good.  We pray for your protection and give thanks for your selflessness and compassion toward others.
19TH ANNUAL GHANA MISSION NETWORK MEETING HIGHTLIGHTS
Over two Saturdays in October, the Ghana Mission Network met to worship, enjoy fellowship, identify partnership opportunities, and conduct business.  Despite the pandemic, our network pursues the hope of God's mission.  Rev. Ken Djotepe (Evangelical Presbyterian Church of Ghana) spoke passionately that the church must be visible and  provide hope to the community during COVID-19. We are called to fill in the gaps where the hands of the government cannot.  So, we must reinvent and innovate church life.

MATTHEW 25: I WAS A STRANGER AND YOU INVITED ME IN...
OVERCOMING EVICTION
Haynie Smith faced significant uncertainty early on in his adult life.  It's a symptom of unaffordable housing that's known all too well in Milwaukee: eviction.  Even though Haynie was paying his bills on time, his landlord wasn't.  Imagine having your life turned upside down in a moment's notice, and to no fault of your own.

Watch how Haynie overcame these struggles to ensure his family would never face something like this again.

'BREAKDOWN WHITENESS' ONLINE RESOURCE EXPLAINS RACISM TO WHITE AUDIENCES
A group of academics in religious studies, history, and ethics recently joined together to develop Breakdown Whiteness, an online resource designed to explain structural racism to white audiences.

The site, breakdownwhiteness.org, launched Nov. 6. It serves as a clearinghouse of existing resources designed to dismantle white supremacy in America. Resources are categorized by age and subject. The site also includes a glossary of terms and actions that can be taken to stop the policies and practices, which enable systemic and structural racism.
NEWS FROM THE DENOMINATION
DECOLONIZING OUR CONSCIOUSNESS
When you examine scripture, how does the lens of colonization influence how you read and understand those passages? That's the question asked during Wednesday's broadcast of Good Medicine, a monthly online conversation with the Co-Moderators of the 224th General Assembly (2020).

The Reverend Gregory Bentley and Ruling Elder Elona Street-Stewart spoke with Jim Bear Jacobs, a member of the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohican Nation, located in central Wisconsin. He also serves as pastor of the Church of All Nations, a multicultural community Presbyterian church, located in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, as part of the Presbytery of the Twin Cities Area. Jacobs is also program director of racial justice for the Minnesota Council of Churches.
PRESBYTERIAN DISASTER ASSISTANCE ADVENT DEVOTIONAL
For Advent 2020, PDA has developed a four-week study, "Annunciations: Disruption and Invitation," using Biblical stories in conversation with documentary films from Story Ministry.

This four week Advent study explores the sacred stories of Advent and Christmas through the biblical narratives of Zechariah, Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary in dialogue with short excerpts from film: particularly, the documentaries by the Story Ministry division of Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, produced alongside the affected communities. Using brief clips as conversation starters and interweaving them with the biblical narrative and Advent themes, a dialogue is created between the Bible's sacred stories, our own human experience, and these also-holy stories from the films. Each week also includes a brief filmed interview connecting the day's topic with the unfolding impact of COVID-19. The films share stories that are drawn from the aftermath of the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami that killed 230,000, gun violence, refugee resettlement, immigration detention and environmental racism

ANYTHING BUT COVID-19 NEWS
NEUROSCIENTIST MAKES PLAYLIST OF THE HAPPIEST SONGS ACCORDING TO SCIENCE
According to one Dutch neuroscientist, most happy songs have some distinctive traits in common. Several years ago, Dr. Jacob Jolij - at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands - was asked to examine a list of favorite songs compiled by the UK-based electronica band Alba. Although not a peer reviewed study, his investigation discovered several trends among the given examples of perky music. "Happy" or "feel good" songs have significantly faster tempos than average pop music, they tend to have cheerful lyrics, and are more often in a major key.

While most scholarly research ends in journal article, this project culminates in a playlist by Jolij of 10 of the happiest songs from past decades. This list is sure to brighten your day with some throw-back tunes.
THE 20 BEST DRUM SOLOS OF ALL TIME, RANKED
The drum solo is that one showstopping moment during a concert that allows the drummer to shake the restrictive chains of timekeeper and showcase their flamboyant and bombastic skills. And it's come a long way since the jazz days when Buddy Rich was king of the hill - drummers' kits are a lot bigger and their skills have advanced to levels that would have seemed inhuman 60 years ago - and the drum solo's appeal has only grown.

This ranked list of the best 20 drum solos of all time includes only live drum solos. Whereas guitar solos are often mainstays of a song, studio recordings usually only feature drum fills, which offer only a few seconds of percussive showmanship. The energy and improvisation of the drum solo are often best experienced live.

HELP STOCK FAITH'S PANTRY AT THE DRIVE-THRU FOOD DRIVE
Friday November 20th, 2:00-6:00 p.m.
Faith Presbyterian Church has seen an increase in food pantry patrons due to the pandemic and fed more people in October than they did in all of 2019! Faith is blessed with congregation and community support this year, and despite an incredibly generous food drive from a local elementary school, they are slated to run out of food again if October levels continue in November. As the holidays approach, Faith predicts continued high numbers and are asking for your help!
