Advocacy Toolkit

The effects of unreliable school bus service can ripple across a student’s

life – disrupting their education experience, adding stress for their parents and caregivers, and making it harder for their families to afford to live in New York City.

NYC students and their families need a high-quality, safe, on-time, and reliable school transportation system. As the current, 45-year-old bus contracts expire, please join with us in advocating for the City to approve no more than a

one-year extension of the current bus contracts, allowing time for state changes so the City can secure new contracts to improve bus service for students.

Click on this advocacy toolkit to find steps that you can take to push for better bus service for all NYC students.

September 25th PEP Meeting

Please join us at the September DOE Panel for Educational Policy (PEP) meeting. At this meeting, we expect the PEP to vote on short-term emergency bus contract extensions, which are needed for bus service to remain in place this fall. We encourage families to attend, voice support for the emergency extensions, share their experience with school bus service, and explain why the PEP should not approve bus contract extensions for longer than one year.

Date: Thursday, September 25th

Time: 6:00 PM EST

Location: Francis Lewis High school (58-20 Utopia Parkway, Queens NY 11365)

Information on how to sign up to speak, ideas for what your speech can be, and more can be found in the advocacy toolkit.

Resources: Expedited Elections

Some PA/PTAs find themselves starting the school year with incomplete boards, but NEVER FEAR! PTAlink is here to help.

If your PA/PTA was unable to elect all the their officers in your spring elections, lost officers over the summer or your PA/PTA ceases to function, you can still fill those vacancies or restart your PA/PTA. Our Expedited Elections Quick Reference is a brief guide on how to hold those elections in the fall.

School is in Session: Launching the RJPS Education Roadmap

Please join us to celebrate the launch of Beyond the Moment: Building the Future of NYC Public Education. This spring, through our β€œSpilling the Tea” campaign, we connected with 1,222 students, parents, educators, and community members to learn their hopes and priorities for public education. Their voices guided us in creating a comprehensive, community-rooted education policy agenda that offers a comprehensive and holistic approach to public education that sets forth the conditions needed to ensure all NYC students are not just prepared to succeed, but to lead in an ever-changing world.

During the event, we will provide an overview of our policy roadmap, share data from our public engagement campaign, and create opportunities to connect with students, parents, educators, community members, elected leaders, and candidates for public office.

Date: Wednesday, September 17th

Time: 6-8PM EST

Location: Kimball Hall

Her son was stuck on a school bus for 3 hours. NY data says the delay never happened.

A Gothamist analysis found that city officials do not have accurate figures on the extent of school bus delays that cut into students’ instructional time and create a constant source of stress for them and their families.

β€œYou hear from students and families who have essentially been crying into a void for years, upon years, upon years about the inadequacies,” said Nyah Berg, a leader of The Road to Better Busing Coalition, a group made up of education and disability rights advocates. Check out the article here.
