GIVE MIAMI DAY- NOVEMBER 17, 2016
Give Miami Day, is a 24-hour giving frenzy!
Hundreds of nonprofits from all over Miami-Dade County, who serve the community in a variety of ways, participate in Give Miami Day. Last year, the YWCA raised over
YOUR support! This year, we have raised the bar, and plan to
DOUBLE THAT NUMBER!
When you participate in Give Miami Day, your donation of $25 or more directly supports our efforts to strengthen families and communities by eliminating racism and empowering women. We are
#OnAMission, and we cannot make a
difference without YOU. When you make a commitment to us for Give Miami Day, you are committing to provide supplies for our Early Childhood and After School Programs.
The Miami Foundation's Give Miami Day is a unique concept that allows you to give for 24 hours! Starting at Midnight on November 17th, you will be able to give until 11:59 that night. It is an exciting day that involves the entire community!

WEEK WITHOUT VIOLENCE
Week Without Violence October 17 - 21, 2016
YWCA is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women, stand up for social justice, help families, and strengthen communities. That's why for more than 20 years, we have set aside one week in October as a Week Without Violence. Week Without Violence is part of a global movement to end violence against women and girls with the World YWCA. This year, we are focusing on ending gender-based violence. Gender-based violence recognizes a spectrum of violence, including but not limited to, intimate partner violence, sexual assault, trafficking, and harassment.
At YWCA, we know that not all violence is acknowledged or responded to equally and that some victims go unrecognized altogether. We invite you to join us from October 17 - 21 as we share information, elevate stories, talk with policymakers, and get out the vote with a common goal in mind: together, we can end gender-based violence.

YWCA PIONEER FOR SUSAN G. KOMEN RACE FOR THE CURE
October 15, 2016
Saturday, October 15, 2016 marked the 20th anniversary of the Miami/Ft. Lauderdale Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. More than 20 years ago, the YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade partnered with Susan G. Komen, and worked hard to bring the Race for the Cure to South Florida. In 1992 following Hurricane Andrew, then YWCA President Marlene Williams found out that her dear friend had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Even in all of the chaos following the hurricane, Marlene vowed to do everything she could to help her friend.
"With the support of Board Vice President Ann Machado, Executive Director Eileen Maloney-Simon and the rest of the Board, the long journey paid off. In May 1996 the inaugural Race was held at Bayfront Park in Miami, kicked off by Former Miami Dolphins Head Coach Don Shula, whose first wife Dorothy had died of breast cancer in 1991."--
Excerpt from History of Miami/Ft. Lauderdale SGK Race for the Cure
Each year since 1996, our staff works to make sure the YWCA continues to show up in support of the Race for the Cure. This year we had a photo station where survivors, community partners and individuals participating in the race could come and interact with the YWCA!

VOLUNTEER WITH THE YW
SPECIAL VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY:
Assist the YWCA on our Mission to eliminate racism and empower women by becoming a tax volunteer!
What Is Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)?
VITA is a free tax preparation program that helps low-to-moderate income families (up to $54,000) with tax preparation. Taxpayers are assisted with receiving tax credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a commonly-overlooked credit that may add more than a month's worth of salary to the individual or family's annual income. During tax season, there are FREE sites across Miami-Dade County. All Sites are staffed by IRS Certified Volunteers.
Help your community in preparing taxes free of charge by becoming a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
You will receive training to provide free tax help for low-to-moderate income families who need assistance preparing their tax returns. Over 90,000 people said yes towards making a difference during the 2015 filing season and prepared over 3.7 million returns at thousands of tax sites nationwide.
We are recruiting for:
* Tax Preparers
* Site Coordinators
* Quality Reviewers
