Field Notes

75 years of caring for Lake Simcoe

For 75 years, people across the Lake Simcoe watershed have shared a responsibility: caring for the lands and waters that connect us.

What began in 1951 with a single subwatershed has grown to encompass more than 3,400 square kilometres, 20 municipalities, 18 major river systems, and countless streams and tributaries — all connected to Lake Simcoe.

This September, we celebrate the people, partnerships, science, and stewardship that have helped protect this incredible watershed for 75 years. Follow the story on our socials.

How do you measure biodiversity?

It starts with a trip to the field! Follow along with our team as they head out to measure plant diversity and collect information that helps us understand the health of the natural spaces in our watershed.

Take a peek at the science happening behind the scenes.

More time to have your say!

There’s still time to tell us what you’re seeing in your local rivers, creeks, and natural spaces. The Subwatershed Plan Update Survey has been extended — share your concerns and priorities to help inform plans for five areas across the Lake Simcoe watershed.

Seasonal Spotlight

School's out. Send them outside!

Turn their next PA Day into an outdoor adventure at Scanlon Creek this fall. Kids ages 4–10 can explore nature, play outdoors, and get creative alongside experienced environmental educators.

Fall date registration is open now, but space is limited.

Creek restoration, up close

Restoration, engineering, and environmental professionals are invited into the field on November 10 for a hands-on Erosion and Sediment Control Workshop in Newmarket. Learn from project experts, see restoration techniques in action, and earn four Continuing Development Hours (CDH).

Dig in this fall

Grab your boots and help give nature a boost! Join us at an upcoming planting event to get native trees and shrubs in the ground and help create healthier habitat across the watershed:

See you outside!

Your voice at the table

Protecting drinking water starts long before it reaches the tap — and you can be part of that work.

The South Georgian Bay Lake Simcoe Source Protection Committee is looking for new members to help protect municipal drinking water sources across the region. Three positions are available. Apply by October 2.
