Hoover High School has a new addition to its Public Service Pathway – a police car. The donated police car is an example of the many ways industry partners assist the career technical education programs and pathways at Hoover, and throughout the district. The police car donation came about because Public Service Pathway teacher David Jones is a former Sheriff with numerous contacts in law enforcement. Through his connections, he obtained the police car from Kings County Sheriff David Robinson. Hoover recognized Robinson as its 2021 CTE Champion at the 2021 CTE Advisory Committee Meeting on May 6th. With the donation of the police car, students are able to try out the radio and become familiar with the technology in the vehicle.

Bullard Law Pathway Submit Mental Health Proposal to San Diego State
As the result of a collaboration between San Diego State, Fresno County Department of Health, and other industry partners, two Bullard High Law & Social Justice students, Alina Diaz and Malik Rabb, presented their proposal for designing a solution to increase awareness and visibility of mental health resources for Transitional Age Youth (16-24). Their idea was to create a website of peer-reviewed and graded mental health resources, with easy to use tools to locate resources on proximity, cost, and other factors. Ms. Diaz and Mr. Rabb worked with design thinking consultants to develop the website mockup (https://epoint.today) and received universal acclaim from the professionals who reviewed their proposal. Both Ms. Diaz and Mr. Rabb are not only graduating valedictorians, but also four-year members of the Law & Social Justice Pathway.

Summer Camps For Students
|
The Career Technical Education (CTE) Department partnered with Fresno State’s Lyles Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship to offer a Young Engineers Camp to all kindergarten through 2 nd grade students in the district. This relevant and hands-on learning opportunity encourages creativity and problem solving specific to engineering challenges, including building a suspension bridge, apple crate and an earthquake resistant skyscraper. Students follow the design process by starting with a challenge, brainstorming possible solutions with their peers, and creating prototypes to share with their classmates. The curriculum is built on two books: What Do You Do With a Problem? And What Do You Do With an Idea? (by Kobi Yamada) that encourage literacy while fostering a growth mindset and adaptability within our students. Each student takes home the books to share with their families to increase inclusive opportunities and engage in their student’s educational journey.

Internships are increasing this summer across our district! The Career Technical Education (CTE) Department has been working together with a variety of partners such as New Vision Aviation at Chandler Airport (seen here), Anthem Blue Cross, NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), Experiences, and local colleges to offer career dives and internship trainings that range from 1-Week Micro Internships to those that run a full six weeks or longer. CTE partnered with other Fresno Unified Departments such as Goal 2’s AASLA (African American Student Leadership Academy), A-4, EL, SPED, and Project Access to recruit 8th-12th grade students to participate in the pilot programs. Over 200 students have signed up.

Duncan Getting a New Medical CTE Building
Duncan is excited to start construction over the summer for its new CTE Medical Building. The building will give students and teachers in the MASH Academy a much needed up-to-date facility, designed specifically for our medical classrooms and pathways, ensuring students will be college and career ready. The new building is intentionally designed to allow instructors and students in all three pathways (Nursing Services, Rehabilitation Therapy and Pharmacy Technician) to collaborate in curriculum, hands-on skills along with work-based learning opportunities, simulating a true medical structure. The structure will also include the MASH Academy’s science classes (Biology, Anatomy/Physiology and Kinesiology) to support Linked Learning work and projects.

Patiño School of Entrepreneurship hosted their first Virtual Investor Expo on May 4 and May 7th. Senior students created a digital booth and elevator pitch of the businesses they have been working on for 2 years. The elevator pitch videos gave them an opportunity to present their different asks of the investors that attended. Some students were looking to sell their businesses, some were looking for additional investment, and some were looking for a partnership or extended mentorship. Our business partners really enjoyed the expo and followed up with many of the teams after to make decisions on the future of their companies.
