Recap: CTE Advisory Committee Meeting
College and Career Readiness recognized Mike Schwan (pictured above) for his support and leadership as the CTE Advisory Committee Chair from 2016-2019. Chris Roup (pictured below) was voted in as incoming CTE Advisory Chair and had her first opportunity to swing the gavel at the May meeting!
Student Summer Internships


McLane students kick off their student teller internships with Union Bank. McLane has a full service Union Bank on campus which hires students in various banking capacities. Click here to learn more about the partnership with Union Bank!
For the second consecutive year, Sunnyside Marketing and Marketing students interned at Chukchansi Park with the Fresno Grizzlies. Students were able to take images that were critiqued and used in various social media platforms by the Fresno Grizzlies.
Edison Biomedical students had an opportunity to learn alongside licensed medical providers assisting with sports physicals at various campuses as part of an internship with Fresno Unified Department of Health Services.
Over a series of three summers, students come to the UC Berkeley campus and engage in paid, intensive learning experience internships as part of the NAF Academy program designed to advance STEM preparation. There was a competitive application process and out of 50 available spots, 23 of them were awarded to Fresno Unified students. For more information on NAF, click here.
Teacher Externships
McLane Medical Instructor, Jennifer Pennington, spent time at Camarena Health this Summer. She was able to learn from Health Educators, front office support staff, Registered Dietitians and a Dentist. She was happy to observe the emphasis on infection control, as she stresses the importance of this with her students.
Edison Mental Health CTE instructor, Abraham Perez, learned Crisis Intervention methods through NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness). Abraham plans to "incorporate lessons so students can identify and synthesize how different demographic groups needs are different than others."
Duncan Polytechnical Manufacturing Instructor, Douglas Urabe, was able to spend a week with PNM, a CNC Machining company. This experience has opened opportunities for future collaboration with the PNM staff.
Roosevelt Public Service CTE instructor, Krishnna Reyes, completed a 48 hour ride along with Fresno Fire. He stated this experience provided first-hand knowledge to share with his students.
More Summer Updates
Coming Soon - Community Garden at Chukchansi Park!
In an effort to create quality Work-Based Learning experiences, our partners with the Fresno Grizzlies have provided an opportunity to have multiple school sites involved in a Community Garden project at Chukchansi Park. Several partners have donated supplies, while teachers and mentors assist in the learning.
The raised beds were constructed by Hoover High Construction students, the garden and soil will be maintained by Sunnyside Agriscience and Hoover Eco-tech students, and Roosevelt Culinary students will create showcase dishes with the assistance of the Grizzlies head chef!

This summer, Fresno Unified hired 178 students to work as paraprofessionals in elementary classrooms during summer school. The students assisted teachers in preparation, classroom management, lesson delivery and also took part in professional learning each week. This opportunity provided students with work experience and knowledge in the teaching field to assist them in their future educational and professional goals.
In June 2019, 77 Fresno Unified students participated in the 4 th  annual Sports Science Institute, a week long camp that exposes students to a variety of programs and careers within the field of Kinesiology at Fresno State. The institute is a partnership between Fresno State’s Kinesiology department and Fresno Unified School District and is designed to give students hands-on experiences in Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education and Sports Psychology.
Doctors Academy
71 Doctors Academy students participated in internships over the summer working with UCSF physicians. The University of California at San Francisco celebrated 31 students graduating from the Doctors Academy at Sunnyside High School in a special ceremony May 22. All of the students will be continuing their education at colleges and universities in the fall. The program is open to students throughout Fresno Unified.

Summer Enrichment - More than 600 2nd-5th grade students participated in Summer Enrichment opportunities across the District.
CTE Summer Enrichment classes for 2nd and 3rd grade students included making catapults to launch a ball of trash as far as possible at Trash for Teachers.
CTE Summer Enrichment experience for 4th and 5th grade students featured a balloon powered car as part of the Vrooming Vehicles unit in the Steam Tunnels curriculum.

As part of the NASA steam cart engineering challenge, 2nd and 3rd grade students worked on building satellites.

Industry Partners Needed for Upcoming Job Shadow Days!!
Job Shadowing is an a cademically motivating and educational activity dedicated to giving kids an up-close look at the world of work. Throughout the day, Fresno Unified students will get a "day in the life" perspective through interacting with your staff and customers, as well as experiencing a variety of careers within your organization. Both students and employees have enjoyed these experiences that have helped students make better decisions about their futures.
The timeframe for this experience is typically 9:30-12:30PM with transportation and chaperones provided by the District. Each organization will have the ability to determine how many students they can host and any dress code requirements.

Ticket to the Future

Parents, Community and Post Secondary partners are invited to attend the 3rd Annual Ticket to the Future event on Monday November 4, 2019 at Valdez Hall from 5:00-6:00PM.
Students from all high schools will be highlighting CTE pathways, programs and courses offered.
