TRIPS & EVENTS

Friday, February 28, 2025 - 10 a.m.

Conn. Bureau of Aquaculture

&

NOAA Fisheries Science Center

Milford, Conn.

Both Connecticut and NOAA operate laboratories and provide services to advocate and support aquaculture and commercial fishing in Long Island Sound.

The facilities of both are located within a short walk from one another in Milford.

A guided tour will be provided by David Carey (Conn.) and Gary Wikfors (NOAA).

We visited these sites several years ago. Members remarked how enlightened they were ... who knew that these state and federal entities even existed? ... how impressed they were by the expertise of the staff at both locations ... the gratification in knowing that such activities are provided by the state and our federal government.

It would be easy to go on and on about this.

Suffice to say that YM members have asked for a repeat visit.

And so, here we are:

on Friday, February 28, we're doing it again.

ABOUT CONN. BUREAU OF AQUACULTURE

https://portal.ct.gov/doag/aquaculture1/aquaculture/aquaculture-home-page

The Bureau's laboratory tests samples to ensure that the state's shellfish are safe for consumption. To do so, the lab annually processes over 5,000 water samples, 150 shellfish meat samples, 10 viral samples, 200 harmful algal bloom samples, 12 biotoxin samples, and Vibrio parahaemolyticus samples. This testing is crucial to public health. Since shellfish are filter feeders, they can concentrate potentially pathogenic bacteria and viruses, biotoxins, and other harmful substances in their tissues; therefore, the lab uses microbiological techniques and indicator organisms to ensure shellfish are safe for human consumption.

ABOUT NOAA

https://www.fisheries.noaa.gov/about-us

NOAA Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the nation's ocean resources and their habitat. It provides vital services for the nation, all backed by sound science and an ecosystem-based approach to management:

  • Productive and sustainable fisheries
  • Safe sources of seafood
  • Recovery and conservation of protected resources
  • Healthy ecosystems

U.S. fisheries are among the world’s largest. Seafood harvested from federally-managed U.S. fisheries is inherently sustainable as a result of the U.S. fishery management process. Using the Magnuson-Stevens Act as the guide, NOAA Fisheries assesses and predicts the status of fish stocks, sets catch limits, ensures compliance with fisheries regulations, and reduces by-catch.
