New Year's Day prayer from Pastor Pam:

God is the underlying, creative, activating and sustaining reality of all that exists, reflected in different types of occurrences in nature: human existence, animal life, vegetable life, single living cells, large scale inorganic aggregates and happenings on an infinitesimal scale revealed by modern physics. Each of these entities requires the other. Nothing stands alone, but shades into the other. (A.N. Whitehead). This interactive process is an expression of God’s relational nature and points to God’s imminence and transcendence.

Many global faith traditions, often symbolically and metaphorically, embrace this view. For me, a Christian, God is also the redemptive and moral ground of being.

Examples: The creation story in Genesis, the teachings of the Hebrew prophets, and Jesus.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. The God said, “let there be light;… (Genesis 1:1-3)

What does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. (Micah 6:8)

I give you a new commandment that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. (John 13:34)

Faith in conjunction with each new discovery in science opens us to God’s eternal and ongoing creative processes in our lives and in the universe, giving witness to the movement of the Holy Spirit present with us now and forever.
