Friday, 6/25/21: Rain, Rain, Go Away, Come Back Some Other Day

HOME SWEET HOME!!

Rain, rain, go away

Come back some other day

All the family wants to play

Rain, rain, go away

—Nursery Ryhme

My grandpa often sang this whenever it rained. I will be singing it tomorrow.

Our plan was to head over toward Red Wing, Minnesota. If we could find a campsite, we could then bike the Canon River Trail. Last summer we went on a bike trail tour that included the Red Cedar-Chippewa River-Old Abe trail system and the Root River-Harmony trail system. We were going to do the Canon River Trail but we got rained out. It was our intention to catch the Canon River Trail on this trip.

There is a county campground in Wisconsin, near Red Wing that we stayed at last summer. I thought we had a very good chance of finding a campsite there. It also had electricity so we could recharge our bike batteries. It was a great plan.

But, alas, the weather report promised an all day soaker for tomorrow. After three months of hot sunny drought, we just about forgot what an all day soaker looked like.

Oh well, rather than wait it out, we decided to head for home, just outside Stevens Point, Wisconsin. It added two hours to our drive, but we’d go past the Knowlton Cheese Factory where they sell the best squeaky cheese curds.

With a pound of squeaky cheese in our tummy’s we arrived home. Our terrific neighbor, Frank, had mowed the yard a couple of times and brought in a couple wheel barrels of mail, which surprised me as I had the post office hold our mail. Actually, I was glad that the post office didn’t hold the mail. We got to see that our Biden check had arrived while we were away - drinks on the house!

Our favorite part of returning home is that we thoroughly scrub down the house just before we leave on a trip. So, when we walk in after a long haul, we are greeted by spic’n’span house. It won’t stay that way long, but we’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

CONCLUSION: As good as it is to be home, I am already nostalgic about the trip. I will reread the daily journals to relive the journey. Wanda will relive it by putting it all on the website: alloverthemaptravelventures.net. We will start to kick around ideas for the fall and winter. Thanks for joining us on our odyssey. There will be more to come in the near future. Stay tuned.

I did miss playing my guitar, as I didn’t play as much as I thought I would have on the trip. So, the first thing I did was to fire up the sound system and rock out.

Glossary of terms used for newcomers: 1) V-Jer. The name of our camper. 2) Saturn. The name of our Van. 3) Duende. Our mischievous gremlin that breaks things. 4) Tata. The good gremlin that helps us fix Duende’s dirty work. 5) The Black Hole. This is what we call Walmart because every time we go in for just a couple of items, we come out spending way more than we figured. 6) QT. Quaint Town. 7) Little Buddy. This is what we call our Dyson cordless stick vacuum.
