Stand Against Unjust Incarceration
Friday, August 14 - 5:00 - 6:00 PM
The Social Justice Committee of Falls Church & Vicinity, an initiative of THHF, will join Falls Church Presbyterian and Falls Church Episcopal as faith-based communities and their neighbors continue the Silent Witness Against Racism. This week we Stand Against Unjust Incarceration.
Friday, August 14, 5:00 -6:00 PM, along Broad Street (Route 7)
Black Americans are imprisoned far more often and with longer sentences than other populations. According to The Sentencing Project, they are sent to prison at more than five times the rate of Whites. In Iowa, Minnesota, New Jersey, Wisconsin & Vermont, that disparity is ten to one. More than half the prison population is Black in Alabama, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. In Maryland, 72% of the prison population is Black.
Adequate housing, better and
accessible mental health treatment & living wage jobs address many of the problems that lead to Black incarceration. Yet, civil society uses prison as a solution to prevent crimes committed in desperate areas with inadequate housing, little to no mental health services, and no jobs. Expanding or changing the prison system does not solve the social problems that lead to crime in the first place. It will take a total dismantling of the prison system and a reimaging of civil society to achieve justice for at-risk Black populations.
