The Generation Safe program on Nantucket was created in 2016 by now retired Captain Liz Shannon. The program offers home safety visits to Nantucket senior citizens age 65 and older. The goal is to provide a comprehensive home safety assessment in order to help seniors remain safe in their homes. We have installed smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replaced batteries, and provided non-slip mats under rugs. The program is partially funded by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Senior Safe Grant and it focuses on the senior population most in need – those who live alone or who are financially unable to install important life safety equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The program is run by Deputy Fire Chief Sean Mitchell and Barbara von der Groeben, a retired registered nurse and former American Red Cross volunteer since 2017. To learn more about the program please call Deputy Fire Chief Sean Mitchell at 508-228-2324 ext. 7 or email at
