New Jersey Update
This afternoon, New Jersey reported an additional 4,782 new positive COVID-19 cases, increasing the statewide total to 1,120,973. An additional 17 deaths were announced, increasing the statewide total to 25,713. Today's positive case total is the highest amount of cases New Jersey has seen in 1 day since January 29th and it's the second consecutive day with more than 4,500 cases. The rate of transmission is 1.39, indicating that each infected person is transmitting the virus to at least 1 other person. The positivity rate is 10.32%. The increases in positive tests comes as the weather is getting colder and the holiday season continues.

This week, New Jersey reported 31 new in-school COVID-19 outbreaks, with 248 in-school outbreaks occurring total this school year. Those outbreaks have lead to 1,345 cases. In-school outbreaks are defined as 3 or more cases that have been transmitted in-school. There have been 25,781 COVID-19 cases among students and 5,701 among staff since the beginning of the school year.

The Assembly plans on holding in-person committee meetings next week after a week of virtual meetings in response to a group of Republican lawmakers refusing to show proof of vaccination to enter the Statehouse during a voting session. On December 1st, a policy was put into effect at the Statehouse requiring all workers and visitors to show proof of vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative coronavirus test fewer than 3 days old. The policy was put into effect by the State Capitol Joint Management Commission, which is made up of 1 member of each of the Senate and Assembly Republican and Democratic caucuses and 4 members appointed by the Governor. Republicans have filed a lawsuit challenging the policy and a judge has set a hearing on the case for Monday. In this week's press briefing, Governor Murphy expressed his outrage at their protest of the policy.
