Tuesday, July 19th 4:30 - 7:30pm

Thursday, July 28th 4:30 - 7:30pm

 Thursday, August 4th 4:30 - 7:30pm

Sails for Old Salts Join Nantucket Community Sailing aboard a range of keelboats this summer for a beautiful evening sail (4:30 - 7:30pm) in Nantucket's Harbor and out into Nantucket Sound! Crew members 55 years and older are welcome. Participants may take an active role in sailing the boat, or are welcome to sit back and relax. Participants may have varying physical abilities, but should be able to step on to the boat and over the life-line, with as much assistance as-needed, and down into the seat. They may need to move from seat to seat on the boat, but going out onto the deck of the boat is not necessary; they may remain in the cockpit for the length of the sail or as they feel most comfortable. Limit 6 people. Life jackets will be provided and sails will be wind and weather-dependent. Participants will need: Closed-toe shoes (old sneakers or non-marking boat shoes are best); layers, including a light jacket (it can be chilly in the evening out on the water); sunglasses/hat; sunblock (please avoid using spray sunblock as it will strip the boat's finish); a light snack; and a water bottle (or non-alcoholic beverage) if-wanted (no glass). We ask that guests limit registration to one sail per summer. Nantucket's Town Launch Service will be donating all launch service for the trip! Guests will meet NCS instructors at 4:30pm 4:30pm at the launch dock that sits just behind the Straight Wharf Restaurant, next to the Hyline Ferry Office. WAIVER NOTE: In 2022, waivers must be signed with Laura Stewart at the Saltmarsh Senior Center in the day(s) prior to the sail. NCS will seek confirmation day-of that all guests for the afternoon or evening sail have a completed waiver. Please join us! If interested, please contact Laura Stewart at the Saltmarsh Center (508) 228-4490.

(FRIENDS OF

NANTUCKET SENIORS)

Check out the website HERE

The City University of New York (CUNY) system is conducting research on what it is like to live on an island in New England. This research is a continuation of a previous study on the influence of nature on the lives of island residents. The current study is two parts. First, you will be asked to complete an electronic survey on what it is like to live on an island in New England. Second, if you would like to participate, you are being asked to take one to three photos that represent what it is like to live on an island in New England. You will be asked to email these photos, along with a description of what the picture(s) represents to a doctoral research assistant at [email protected]. The research assistant will store these pictures in a secure file with no identifying information.

At the end of the survey, you will have the option to submit your email address to be entered into a lotto to win one of five $25 electronic Amazon gift cards. Please share the study link with any other potential participants who are over 18 years old and have lived on an island in New England for over one year. Thank you for your time and your consideration.

The Generation Safe program on Nantucket was created in 2016 by now retired Captain Liz Shannon. The program offers home safety visits to Nantucket senior citizens age 65 and older. The goal is to provide a comprehensive home safety assessment in order to help seniors remain safe in their homes. We have installed smoke and carbon monoxide alarms, replaced batteries, and provided non-slip mats under rugs. The program is partially funded by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Senior Safe Grant and it focuses on the senior population most in need – those who live alone or who are financially unable to install important life safety equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. The program is run by Deputy Fire Chief Sean Mitchell and Barbara von der Groeben, a retired registered nurse and former American Red Cross volunteer since 2017. To learn more about the program please call Deputy Fire Chief Sean Mitchell at 508-228-2324 ext. 7 or email at
