First State Emergency Response Act

On Thursday, the Delaware State Senate unanimously passed Senator Buckson's First State Emergency Response Act (SS 1 for SB 284).

When first responders are protecting our communities during emergencies, they should be able to focus on saving lives and keeping people safe, not on individuals who intentionally interfere with their work or threaten them.

This legislation makes it a crime to ignore a lawful warning or cross a marked emergency barrier with the intent to impede, interfere with, or threaten a law enforcement officer, firefighter, EMT, paramedic, or fire police officer while they are performing their duties.

Our first responders put themselves in harm's way every day for us. This bill gives them another tool to help maintain safe emergency scenes so they can do the jobs we've asked them to do.

The legislation now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.

Spirit of America 250

This week, Senator Pettyjohn sponsored SCR 250, celebrating the Spirit of America 250 as our nation prepares to mark its 250th anniversary. It passed the Senate unanimously with every senator signing on as a co-sponsor.

This resolution reflects on the people, principles, and perseverance that have shaped our country throughout its history. As we look ahead to America's 250th birthday, we are reminded of the importance of preserving freedom, protecting liberty, and passing those values on to future generations.

The American story is one of resilience, innovation, and opportunity, and that story is still being written today.

Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that enslaved people were free. That day became known as Juneteenth and is recognized as a milestone in our nation's journey toward liberty.

Today, we reflect on this important chapter in American history and the enduring ideals of freedom, equality, and opportunity.

DNREC Offers Expanded Assistance for Farmers Due to Significantly Increased Reports of Deer Damage

Delaware farmers experiencing significant crop damage from deer now have expanded access to assistance through the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC).

For the 2026 summer season, qualifying farmers can enroll directly in the Extreme Deer Damage Assistance Program (EDDAP), allowing year round harvesting of antlerless deer on enrolled properties without the usual application requirements. DNREC said the temporary changes are intended to provide immediate relief as farmers face increased deer damage, drought conditions, and rising production costs.

DNREC also noted that deer harvested through the program will be tested as part of the state's response to Delaware's first confirmed case of Chronic Wasting Disease.

For the Record

On the latest episode of For The Record, Senators Pettyjohn and Buckson, Deanna, and Matt discuss updates on the Skip the Stuff Act, SB 249, and a resolution honoring our nation's 250th birthday is deemed too controversial by the Democrats in the House of Representatives.
