Sunday Service October 15th at 10:30am

A Journey of the Spirit

Each of us has a journey of the spirit, call it what you will - meaning making, philosophy, or faith tradition. We celebrate the many paths we have traveled on the way to this moment and this congregation. This Sunday, member, Curt Evans, shares his spiritual journey of introspection, overcoming challenges, and finding peace in nature. Rev. Eileen serves as his worship associate.

The issues of Pro-Choice and Reproductive Justice continue to abound. Yes, we have protections in the state of Illinois. However, restrictions of so many neighboring states continue to grow after the demise of Roe v. Wade. Many women have no other choice than to come to Illinois for needed medical care, and many do not have the resources to seek such care. Travel expenses, child care, time off from work make such a possibility impossible, unless they are assisted.

To aid in that pursuit, an Evanston Pro-Choice Rally and March is scheduled for Sunday, October 15, 12 noon, at Raymond Park in Evanston, where noted speakers and energizing entertainers (including our own UCE member Kristin Lems) along with many other participants will gather to COMMIT to supporting active pro-choice organizations. All are encouraged to wear HOT pink and comfy shoes and bring loud voices, homemade signs, noise makers and their checkbooks! Priority seating will be available for senior citizens and the disabled. Following the Rally, participants will have the option of “taking to the streets” of downtown Evanston or remaining at Raymond Park to meet with several of our engaged organizations. Those of you who cannot attend, please SPREAD THE WORD and send a PROXY. In order to return to some kind of sanity regarding women’s reproductive care, we must “DO WHATEVER WE CAN”, either by speaking up, volunteering time, sending emails, committing financially, attending rallies, making phone calls, and/or holding fundraisers! In any case, WE MUST NEVER GIVE UP! Women must be able to make their own decisions regarding their reproductive health and well being. Hope to see many of you at the Rally. It’s a 5 block walk or car ride from UCE!

Staff Highlight by Rev Susan

Dear Friends,

It has been a difficult week to process. It is hard to know what to say without seeming trite or oversimplifying the nuances of the situation following the Hamas attack in Israel on October 7th and the Israeli government’s response. I have heard from some of you and know that we are grieving and mourning for everyone who is suffering at this moment. My heart is breaking over this devastating act of violence and its consequences for the people living in Israel and Palestine.

With the violence unleashed by Hamas and then that event being used as the basis for fake social media postings by people trying to divide the Black Lives Matter movement in the US, it is difficult to hold all of the feelings, discern the facts of what is happening, and know how to respond.

For me, the way forward is through relationship. The intertwining complexities of our times make it vital that we continue to share with and support each other. Reaching out to family and friends with loved ones in Israel and Palestine, reaching out to those who are part of the Black Lives Matter movement, reaching out to folks who share our values. If you are in need of some support or want to talk through what is going on in your life or in the world, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at sfrances@ucevanston.org, Rev. Eileen at ewiviott@ucevanston.org, or the Pastoral Care Team by filling out a Request for Care form.

In our faith community, we will continue to strengthen our relationships with each other. In the coming weeks, we are running new member classes, forming 6-month covenant groups, and inviting you to a congregation wide Engagement Fair on Sunday, November 5, 2023, after the worship service.

Native Communities Solidarity Team

Thanks Endowment Committee

UCE’s Native Communities Solidarity Team (NCST) received an Endowment Fund grant of $1,500, which enabled us to collaborate in a program with two other Evanston faith-based organizations. With the grant, we joined Reba Place Church and Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary to bring the play “We Own This Now” to Evanston for two no-charge performances in March 2023. About 300 people attended these performances, which were followed by discussions with the actors.

The play is a production of Ted & Company TheaterWorks, which describes itself on its website as using “humor and professional storytelling to talk about issues of faith and social justice”. “We Own This Now” engagingly educated us about the Doctrine of Discovery and how it relates to issues of land ownership for Native communities today.* The play strongly displayed the harms that resulted from land being taken from Native communities by the U.S. government. The grant funds from UCE’s Endowment allowed donations made by attendees at the play to be donated to Chi-Nations Youth Council and the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian.

The Native Communities Solidarity Team (NCST) was formed in late 2022 to enhance UCE’s commitment to justice for Native Americans, living into the commitment of our Land Acknowledgement, to “greater accountability, deeper relationship, and mutuality with contemporary Indigenous communities”.

After helping bring this play to Evanston, the NCST sponsored a docent tour and discussion at the Mitchell Museum in May 2023 and 22 people from UCE attended.

The Native Communities Solidarity Team is grateful for the support of the Endowment Fund to make our first project possible.

* “The doctrine of discovery refers to a principle in public international law under which, when a nation ‘discovers’ land, it directly acquires rights on that land”. (law.cornell.edu)

What’s Policy Governance? by Melanie Kitchner

When I joined the UCE Board of Trustees (BOT) in July, I needed a refresher about what Policy Governance entails. Basically, Policy Governance means the Board of Trustees works with the congregation to establish our shared vision and goals, and they monitor the Executive, in our case, the Senior Minister, as she leads the staff in making sure we are realizing them. In other words, the Board sets the policies, and the Senior Minister and staff oversee the implementation of those policies.

The Senior Minister regularly reports to the Board on the Values statements, we as a congregation developed to direct our mission. The Board stays in regular communication with the whole congregation to understand the collective hopes, dreams, and direction we want to go together. Some congregational boards focus mostly on daily operations. At UCE, under policy governance, the Board keeps the big picture in mind and sets policies that guide our direction.

Policy Governance lets the staff and ministers direct the day-to-day activities of the congregation, based on the policies the Board sets with congregational input. The BOT defines and delegates, rather than reacts and ratifies. The ministers and staff are empowered to help implement the ways we make our shared values come alive.

The Board of Trustees meets monthly on the third Thursdays, 7:00-8:30pm, usually on Zoom. The Senior Minister, Executive Operations Director and Assistant Minister also attend the Board meetings.

We are reading David Treuer's books about Native American history. Participants may choose to read Treuer's 512 page book entitled The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Native America from 1890 to the Present, published in 2019 or his shorter, 275 page young adult book entitled The Heartbeat of Wounded Knee: Life in Native America, published in 2022.

The author shatters the myth that Native American civilization ended in 1890 with the massacre of more than 150 Sioux at Wounded Knee. He blends historical research, interviews with tribal members and his own personal reflections on growing up Indian to tell the true story of Native resilience and resistance to being written out of modern American history.

All Congregation Read

This year, we will spend 6 months reading the book, Mistakes and Miracles: Congregations on the Road to Multiculturalism, by Nancy Palmer Jones and Karin Lin.

The book shares how five different congregations encounter frustrations and disappointments, as well as hope and wonder, once they commit to the journey to create multicultural, antiracist Beloved Community.

We have enough people registered to have two groups. One will meet the 2nd Sunday of each month,12:30-1:30 and another will meet on the first Thursdays, 7-8pm from November 2023 through April 2024. Rev. Eileen and Rev. Susan will take turns facilitating a monthly conversation using the congregational case studies provided in the book.

If you are interested in being part of this book group, please register here or email Rev. Susan at sfrances@ucevanston.org.
