Remembering Charlie Kirk

Our caucus is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, who was fatally shot during an event at Utah Valley University. He leaves behind his wife, Erika, their three-year-old daughter, and one-year-old son.

Charlie devoted his life to engaging young people in the political process, traveling the country to host campus events where students could ask questions, challenge ideas, and participate in open debate. He believed passionately that America must return to a place where we can disagree without hatred and discuss issues without resorting to violence.

Civility over Violence

The assassinations of Charlie and Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, along with the attempts on President Trump’s life, are sobering reminders that political violence has no place in our nation. No matter our differences, Americans must recommit to civility, respectful debate, and the values that bind us together. Violence can never be the answer.

Fighting for Lower Energy Costs

Last winter, extreme cold combined with misguided energy policies drove costs through the roof. With colder months just around the corner, Delawareans could be facing the same struggle again, especially after another round of rate increases this past April.

That’s why Senator Gerald Hocker introduced two bills to deliver relief:

- SB 64 ensures that excess Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) funds are returned directly to ratepayers through bill rebates.

- SB 65 would end Delaware’s participation in RGGI altogether, helping lower prices by removing costly compliance burdens that get passed down to families and businesses.

Delawareans deserve affordable, reliable energy, not higher bills caused by policies that have already pushed plants like Indian River out of the market.

Improving Education in Delaware

In 2014, Senator Eric Buckson wrote this commentary while serving as a Levy Court Commissioner and public school teacher. The message then is just as relevant today:

- Delaware must rethink how we measure success in education.

- Not every student’s path is the same — vocational training and real-world skills matter.

- Preparing students for life after school, whether college or career, should be the ultimate goal.

More than a decade later, these words still ring true as Delaware continues to search for ways to strengthen its education system.

In the Community: CHEER Fall Day

Senator Dave Wilson joined the community at CHEER’s annual Fall Day at Trap Pond, where he helped serve lunch to hundreds of local seniors and individuals who benefit from CHEER’s services.

The event featured a classic picnic lunch, entertainment from DJ Sky Brady, plus plenty of door prizes and raffles. Vendors were also on hand to share resources and services for seniors.

CHEER continues to provide a welcoming space for fellowship, fun, and support for our neighbors, and Senator Wilson says he was grateful to be a part of this year’s celebration.

Grant-in-Aid Applications Now Being Accepted

The Office of the Controller General has opened the application period for General and Veterans Grant-In-Aid (GIA) funding for Fiscal Year 2027.

Applications must be submitted by Friday, December 5, 2025, at 3 p.m. Eligible organizations can log in and apply through either the GIA website or the Grants Management System.

Applicants are encouraged to review the GIA website for step-by-step guides, FAQs, and additional resources. Questions about the application process may be directed to the Office of the Controller General at (302) 744-4200 or GIA_Support@Delaware.gov.

Please note that due to recent legislation, GIA payments will no longer be issued by check. Awardees are encouraged to selected ACH (Automated Clearing House), also known as direct deposit, via the State of Delaware’s eSupplier Portal.

Senior Center GIA applications will open separately on January 5, 2026, with a deadline of March 13, 2026.
