NATIONAL DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER DAY | SEPTEMBER 15
One of America’s favorites, National Double Cheeseburger Day recognizes a food icon savored across the United States.
Hamburger. Seasoned ground beef, grilled and placed between two slices of bread or a bun. Top with sauteed onions, peppers, pickles, sliced onions, and cheese. Add condiments such as ketchup, mustard, or mayo. Any one of these combinations would create a modern American version a hamburger.
Now, double the patties and the cheese. The celebration requires it.
While the day is about the double cheeseburger, that doesn’t mean you can’t add your favorite toppings. When it comes to adding some tanginess to a burger, a few ingredients never fail. Goat cheese brightens a burger every time. But if you’re looking for a crispness, too, add some creamy coleslaw instead. Another option in this category is the reliable tartar sauce.
If you like to bring the heat, you can look to your cheeses. Pepper jack is a mild way of adding some spice. However, if you prefer to test the limits, fresh sliced jalapenos or habaneros will also do the trick.
It is most likely that the hamburger sandwich first appeared in the 19th or early 20th centuries, but there is much controversy over its origin. Over the years, the hamburger has become a culinary icon in the United States.
And Americans love their burgers! Restaurants dedicated to making them just right have been in business for generations. Even those who refrain from red meat don’t hesitate to find a way to enjoy a juicy burger. Whether the burger is charbroiled, grilled or barely kisses the heat, there’s a flavor for you.
So when something this delicious exists, double it! Then celebrate it!

Tulane business forum to discuss Louisiana’s next-generation economy
Lance Traweek,
As businesses pursue new opportunities in Louisiana’s legacy industries, a panel of executives and experts will discuss the state’s emerging economy and what they’re doing now to position themselves for future success.
For the 44th annual Tulane Business Forum, topics will include energy, health care, real estate and gaming.
Titled “Winning Strategies: Louisiana’s Next Generation Economy,” the forum will take place on Friday, September 15, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans.
Presented by the Tulane Association of Business Alumni (TABA), which represents more than 25,000 graduates of Tulane University’s A. B. Freeman School of Business, the forum is the association’s main event and one of the region’s largest annual conferences dedicated to local and national business topics.
“Louisiana’s economy has long been driven by industries like oil and gas, health care and hospitality, but now we’re seeing a shift, with visionary leaders embracing new technologies, approaches and business models,” Louis David, president of TABA, said in the news release. “The 44th annual Tulane Business Forum showcases some of these future-focused executives who are developing winning strategies for the future.”
“This year’s forum highlights many of the strategic themes we’re focusing on in our programs, including our newly redesigned MBA,” Paulo Goes, dean of the Freeman School and one of this year’s speakers, said in the news release. “Effectively managing the energy transition, assessing the financial impact of climate change, and understanding the metrics of key industries like real estate and health care — these are subjects that will play a growing role in business over the next decade and that every manager needs to be familiar with.”
Highlighting this year’s forum will be keynote presentations from two executives: Dan Real, chief experience officer at Caesars Digital and Caesars Entertainment Inc., who will outline the past, present and future of sports betting; and Gregory C. Feirn, CEO of LCMC Health, who will discuss the rapidly evolving health care business and his vision for LCMC.
The forum will also feature more than a dozen speakers addressing topics such as energy transition, real estate development, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG), and changing state and federal tax regulations.
This year’s speakers include:
• Laura Beauchamp, Director of Resource Planning and Market Operations, Entergy
• Colette Hirstius, SVP of Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, Shell
• James Martin, CEO, Gulf Wind Technology
• Adrian A. D’Arcy, Founding Partner, D’Arcy Vicknair LLC
• Tara C. Hernandez, President & CEO, JCH Properties+
• Cullan Maumus, Managing Director, NORF Companies
• Daniela Mills, SVP, Practice Leader – General Property, Lockton Companies LLC

As a port city, New Orleans has a long, storied history with the world's favorite roasted, caffeinated beans. As a city also known for its vibrant festival culture, it makes perfect sense that the New Orleans Convention Center would be home to the brand-new NOLA Coffee Festival. The goal of the two-day event is to celebrate all things related to coffee—from New Orleans's own coffee history, to the talented community of roasters, purveyors, baristas, and other coffee professionals who help fill our mugs with caffeinated joy each day.
Friday, September 15 is Trade and Industry Day, where leaders in the coffee industry will give educational talks and lead skills classes while purveyors showcase the latest developments in coffee, brewing techniques, equipment, and more.
Saturday, September 16 is Consumer Day, where coffee lovers from across the South and beyond are invited to sample brews from more than a dozen of the South's most esteemed roasters, and sharpen their own home barista skills with special home brewing classes.
More information on the festival and the full schedule of events can be found at nolacoffeefestival.com.

Earlier today, Shell – one of the largest companies in the world – announced that it was recommitting to New Orleans as headquarters for its Gulf of Mexico operations. As a foundation of this strategy, Shell will be relocating its New Orleans office into the new River District project, located near the Convention Center along the Mississippi River. The terms of the deal include a 12-year lease of a custom-designed, 142,000-square-foot multi-floor building, scheduled to open by early 2025.
The announcement by Shell is one of the biggest economic development wins for New Orleans in a decade. The impact includes the retention of over 850 office jobs, as well as over 2,000 offshore jobs (many of whom live in Greater New Orleans). Further, Shell will serve as the anchor catalytic tenant for the new River District — one of the most promising new mixed-use neighborhoods in the country — occupying the first Class A office building to be constructed in New Orleans since 1989. Shell has also been a lead community partner to Greater New Orleans, especially since Hurricane Katrina, when it anchored the reestablishment of Jazz Fest.
GNO, Inc. has been working with Shell for many years, not only to sustain the company’s presence in the region, but also partnering on an “all-of-the-above clean energy future” strategy that includes wind, carbon capture, and Shell’s conversion of their Convent site to a sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel production facility. GNO, Inc. has also been a supporter of the River District project since its inception.
Several GNO, Inc. partners were involved in this announcement, including Shell, Governor John Bel Edwards, Mayor Cantrell, Senator Royce Duplessis, Lesli Harris and the New Orleans City Council, the Convention Center, Louisiana Economic Development, and the entire River District team, led by Lauricella Land, Cypress Equities, JCH Properties+, AMG Properties, Webre Consulting, CLB Porter, VPG Enterprise, Boh Bros. Construction, Gibbs Construction, and Broadmoor.

About the Exhibition
In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.
Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.
Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.
American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.
A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
- Optional add-ons:

- Crabmeat 9.95
- Chicken 6.95
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

Following Mucho Más Departure, Chef Julio Machado Embarks on Arepas Restaurant
The Venezuelan-born chef wants to dive into his roots at his first solo venture in New Orleans
by Clair Lorell
Boiled shrimp, domino, and fugazetta arepas from Como Arepas. Sofija Simic/Como Arepas
One of Venezuela’s most important dishes, the arepa, is coming to Uptown New Orleans in the form of a fast-casual, counter-service restaurant. Como Arepas, opening soon at 7712 Maple Street, is from Julio Machado, the Venezuelan-born chef known for cooking South American and Mexican food at local spots like Brasa Churrasqueria, Zocalo, Tacos del Cartel, and most recently, the now-closed Mucho Más.
Opening in the former home of Zo’ Jo’ Cafe, Como Arepas will be a mostly takeout operation with countertop seating for eight and two sidewalk tables for outdoor dining. Some arepas will come packed with traditional Venezuelan fillings, like arepa dominó (black beans and cheese), asado negro, and an avocado and chicken salad known in Venezuela as reina pepiada, which translates to “curvy queen” (it’s simply called the Queen on the Como Arepas menu). There are vegan and vegetarian options, too, and since arepas are made from pre-cooked corn flour — also known as masarepa — they are gluten-free.
“I think what makes Venezuelan arepas different than say, Colombian arepas, is that ours have many, many more flavors [and] fillings,” Machado tells Eater. It’s no surprise, then, that Como Arepas promises to deliver on variety — the restaurant will serve close to 50 filling combinations. “In Venezuela, there’s an arepas stand on every other corner,” says Machado. “What I’m trying to bring to Uptown is my roots, the flavors of Venezuela, made with local ingredients, local products.”

What does "disingenuous" mean?
Honest
Gross
Insincere
Sick
What does "disingenuous" mean?
Insincere
disingenuous /dɪsɪnˈdʒɛnjʊəs/
Definition: not sincere or candid; giving a false appearance of frankness.
Origin: The term originated in the mid-17th century from the Latin word 'disingenuus' which means 'not of noble birth' or 'ignoble'.
Example: She gave a disingenuous apology, claiming she was sorry but her tone suggested otherwise.
Insincere is another word that can be used to describe "disingenuous". Both words mean lacking in sincerity, honesty or truthfulness. However, "disingenuous" goes a bit further in implying that the person is deliberately hiding something or being manipulative. On the other hand, "insincere" can simply mean that the person is not being genuine, without necessarily implying any hidden agenda. Both words are often used interchangeably, but "disingenuous" is usually reserved for cases where someone is actively trying to deceive or mislead.

Friday's Wine School...When we think about Southern France, most of us tend to gravitate to the wine regions of Provence and the Rhone Valley. Who doesn't love a Provence rosé or a juicy Cotes du Rhone?? But if you travel just a wee bit further west along the coast, you'll run smack into the Languedoc-Rousillon and the Sud Ouest - great wine regions that are often overlooked in favor of their more polished, more well-known neighbors.
It's an ancient wine producing area - the Greeks were likely the first to introduce viticulture to the area around 600 BC when they established colonies in what is now modern-day southern France. The Romans loved the region because it was crisscrossed by the superhighways of the Ancient world, massive navigable rivers which allowed for fast military and trade movement right into the heart of France. Wine production here was prolific during the Middle Ages, went into serious decline during the Cathar Crusades and experienced periods of revival and expansion throughout the centuries, particularly during the Renaissance. However, it wasn't until the late 18th and 19th centuries that the wine industry in the region started to thrive again. The creation of the Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC) system in France in the 1930s helped establish quality standards and designate specific wine regions within Languedoc and Sud-Ouest. Starting in the late 20th century and continuing into the 21st century, there has been a significant shift in Languedoc towards producing higher-quality wines
The regions have a lot going for them - an incredibly diverse range of terroirs, including coastal areas, rolling hills, plains, and mountainous terrain. This diversity allows for the cultivation of a wide variety of grape varieties and wine styles. From the coastal vineyards along the Mediterranean Sea to the high-altitude vineyards of the Pyrenees Mountains, the region's geography contributes to the distinctiveness of its wines. They have an extensive range of grape varieties, including both traditional French grapes and international varieties. Prominent red grape varieties include Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Malbec (Cot), Tannat, and Carignan, while white grape varieties like Chardonnay, Viognier, and Grenache Blanc, Rolle and Sauvignon Blanc thrive in the region
Join us as we show this Southwest corner of France a little love with Wesley from Vino Wholesale as we explore some of the different AOCs from the Pyrennes to the Mediterranean Sea. Reserve your spot here, Languedoc & Sud Ouest

A cabaret once operated by a woman who claimed to have had an affair with former President Bill Clinton is making a return to its old St. Louis Street location, according to an announcement last week.
In a July 26 Facebook post, Gennifer Flowers announced that she will be reopening the Kelsto Club at 720 St. Louis St. Flowers initially opened the club in the early 2000s before it closed several years later.
Flowers made the news back in the early 1990s when she claimed to have had a 12-year-long affair with Clinton. Flowers came forward with her claim during Clinton’s presidential campaign.
Flowers said she will be reopening the Kelsto Club along with her friend Kitsy Adams, who was a close friend to the late Chris Owens. Local reports stated that Flowers hopes to have the club opening September 15
When the club reopens, Flowers said she’ll be performing along with Mimi Guste on the piano and with jazz musician Tony Seville.

A Musical by Max Vernon
Take a step back in time to the French Quarter in 1973 as the patrons of The UpStairs Lounge help a modern-day millennial reevaluate his concepts of love and freedom.
Wes, a 20-something social media obsessed fashion designer has returned from New York to his hometown of New Orleans to transform the former Upstairs Lounge nightclub into a retail store. After a nerve-wracking visit with his realtor, he time travels through a burned-out curtain into the 1973 arson-destroyed club. There, he meets the men who inhabited this “underground” venue decades ago. Despite the many limitations and challenges of the lounge patrons’ lives--and the horrifically tragic crime that ends them—their lifestyle ultimately proves to be more honest, authentic, and joyful than his superficial online social life. Will Wes take these lessons back to the future with him?
This production contains adult language, sexual content, and violence.

The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans ends its seventh season with Spring Storm by Tennessee Williams this September at The Lower Depths Theatre on the campus of Loyola University New Orleans, directed by Salvatore Mannino. Mannino recently directed Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time for Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre. He serves as artistic director of the Loyola University New Orleans Department of Theatre and Dance, where TWTC has a professional residency since 2019.
Spring Storm serves as an origin story for many of Williams’ signature tragic heroines. It was written from 1937-38 when the playwright was in college and during his travels to New Orleans and beyond. It never received a staging in his lifetime, but in its pages are planted the seeds for Amanda and Laura Wingfield of The Glass Menagerie and Blanche DuBois of A Streetcar Named Desire among other characters from his popular plays.
The story centers around Heavenly Critchfield, a small town woman torn between the choice of her longtime boyfriend and a desire to leave town to start a new life and the chance to become the wealthiest housewife in town for a mysterious old schoolmate just returned home. Both men are making moves that benefit themselves, and Heavenly realizes she has to choose based on someone she’s never been asked to consider: herself. All the while, her mother, caught in her family’s former glory, hopes she’ll make the choice to elevate their reputation. What Heavenly doesn’t realize is that danger and jealousy lurks around every crepe myrtle tree and azalea bush in this seemingly sweet town…and there will be deadly consequences to her decisions. Set against the backdrop of the post-Depression Mississippi Delta, the play is full of Southern Gothic Easter eggs for longtime Williams fans and is replete with small town gossip and drama for first-time Williams initiates.
An all local cast includes Nicole Miller as Heavenly (Rivertown’s Matilda), Matthew Raetz as Dick Miles (TSF’s Romeo & Juliet), Matthew Boese as Arthur Shannon (TWTC’s Sweet Bird of Youth) and. Charlie Carr as Hertha; and features Tracey E. Collins, Margeaux Fanning, Miles Hamauei, Delphine J, and Maile Zox.
The production team for the production includes Nick Shackleford, Diane Baas, Eric Porter, Grace Smith, Puck, Augustin J Correro, and Madeline Taliancich. This season of the Tennessee Williams theatre Company of New Orleans is supported by a grant from The New Orleans Theatre Association (NOTA) and The New Orleans Tourism & Cultural Fund (NOTCF).
“We are thrilled to end this season on this early Tennessee Williams treasure trove filled with his ideas for future masterpieces. It sets the stage for an exciting next season when audiences will see so many of these ideas explored. We can’t wait to share all of these amazing plays with our audiences, starting with Spring Storm,” says TWTC Founding Co-Artistic Director Nick Shackleford.

NATIONAL CHEESE TOAST DAY | SEPTEMBER 15
On September 15th, National Cheese Toast Day savors the cheesy goodness of this classic dish.
Simple but delicious, cheese and toast go well together. A little butter helps everything meld together nicely, too. The crustier the bread, the better. It makes an excellent side dish, but cheese toast also serves up a satisfying snack.
While food holidays aren’t in short order on the calendar, we can’t surpass them because of the carb count. Cheese and toast perfectly combine to dunk into soup. In the middle of dinner conversation, a chunk of cheese toast waved in the air emphatically punctuates your story, especially when finishing a monologue with a satisfying bite.
It might surprise many to know the treat was created by Del Johnson. In 1958, he opened his first Sizzler restaurant. It was an instant success. And although the recipe changed a bit over the years, the concept of Cheese Toast hasn’t.
Over 60 years later, Cheese Toast continues to be a favorite dish across the country. With the best cheeses and bread, served up as an appetizer, with soup or with the main course, cheese toast pairs well with many dishes.

NATIONAL LINGUINE DAY | SEPTEMBER 15
On September 15th, National Linguine Day fills the dinner menu at home and restaurants across the country.
From the Liguria region of Italy, linguine means “little tongues” in Italian. Made from durum semolina flour, linguine is one of the world’s oldest kinds of pasta. Fettuccine and linguine both developed around 400 years ago. While both are thin, flat noodles, linguine is narrower and more elliptical in shape. As a result, linguine produces a more delicate pasta. To avoid breakage, pair linguine with thinner, lighter sauces.
However, lighter sauces don’t limit linguine’s flavor profile. In fact, linguine recipes offer a wide variety of sauces. Whether you prefer spicy pasta or seafood, linguine offers a nice base. It compliments herb and butter sauces nicely, too. When adding fresh vegetables, linguine allows the bright colors to shine. Pesto lovers rave over linguine. Another ingredient that favors linguine is earthy mushrooms.

Sterling P. Fergusson launches the first gas weather balloon in the United States. Made of rubber and measuring 6 feet in diameter, the balloon was filled with hydrogen and ascended from the grounds of St. Louis Louisiana Purchase Exposition. The meteorologist, working for the Blue Hill Observatory out of Milton, MA, included instruments for measuring atmospheric conditions at high altitude. The basket also included information for returning the basket once it descended back to Earth.

Born on September 15th
James Fenimore Cooper – 1789
The American writer is best known for his frontier stories. In his Leatherstocking Tales, he created memorable characters such as Natty Bumbo and Hawkeye.
George Franklin Grant – 1846
Not only was Grant the first African American on the Harvard faculty, but he also invented the first golf tee. While he never marketed the invention, it was patented on December 12, 1899.
Jan Ernst Matzeliger – 1852
Matzeliger’s invention demonstrated how innovation often leads to more jobs, not fewer. In 1883, the shoemaker received patent No. 274,207 for a lasting machine that could produce 700 shoes a day. Before his invention, production was slow, and shoes were mostly handmade. However, after his machine was put to use, more employees were required to keep pace with the increased production.
Edward A. Bouchet – 1852
The physicist and teacher became the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in America. He would advocate for better educational opportunities for his students and was a member of the Franklin Institute and the American Academy of Political and Social Science.
William Howard Taft – 1857
The 27th president of the United States was more than a politician. After serving his presidential term, Taft continued his distinguished law career and became the 10th chief justice of the United States. In 1911, during his presidential term, he also proposed an idea that became known as the Chamber of Commerce.
Claude McKay – 1889
A student of the Tuskegee Institute and Kansas State College, McKay’s poems and novels spoke of social and political divisions. At the time, his work was a major influence in the Harlem Renaissance. Works like his novel Home to Harlem and poets like If “We Must Die” brought a literary response to the movement.
Agatha Christie – 1890
The prolific mystery writer is also the world’s best-selling author of fiction. With estimates soaring to the 2 billion mark, Christie’s works have also inspired television series and movies.
Sir Donald Coleman Bailey – 1901

Jessye Norman – 1945
The Grammy-winning soprano earned a reputation for her broad range and dramatic performances.
Tommy Lee Jones – 1946
In his more than 30 year career, the award-winning actor has played such memorable roles as Agent K in Men in Black, Samuel Gerard in The Fugitive and Woodrow F. Call in the television mini-series Lonesome Dove.
Prince Harry – 1984
The Duke of Sussex is the second son of Charles, Prince of Wales and Diana, Princess of Wales.

FRENCH QUARTER STREET
A simple photograph from Arnold Genthe taken in 1920 and depicting two mule-drawn wagons on the streets of New Orleans. The photographer gave no location, but there are two clues in the background -- the sign for the Square Deal Grocery behind the umbrella at right center and a fading painted sign in the top center background on the side of the building for the Southern Laundry Company.
At that time, the Square Deal Grocery was located at 744 - 746 South Rampart Street which would put this image between Girod and Julia Streets. It might be possible, but since my only experience of this location is an area devoid of almost all buildings. However, the street appears to be too narrow.
The second clue is the faded sign for the Southern Laundry Company which was located at 922 St. Louis Street, and a long look at the neighborhood reveals the roofline of this building on St. Louis Street at Burgundy looking toward the river.
A tip of the hat to Michael Styborski and Nick Weber who helped point me in the right direction.

The Girod House – The Napoleon House
At 500 Chartres Street on the corner of St. Louis Street stands the Girod House, built in by the mayor of New Orleans Nicholas Girod just after the Great Fire in 1794. According to legend, the three story addition to the building he completed in 1814 was offered in 1821 to Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte as a place of refuge during his exile from France. Of course, Napoleon never came to New Orleans, but the name remains attached to the building to this day, known as the Napoleon House.
In this photograph from the first decade of the 20th century by the Detroit Publishing Company, the three-story structure housed Joseph Labourdette’s family grocery store. There are signs on the posts and walls for American Lager Beer, Pyle’s Pralines, and Cellulose Starch. To the right of the image is a large billboard for Victory Tobacco – “The Largest 5¢ Package of High Grade Tobacco Sold.” On the upper wall of the building to its right is a sign for J. B. Junqua Company, Inc, a wine and liquor store.
Parked in front of the grocery on Chartres Street is J. Gatti’s Ice wagon making deliveries from his depot at 511 Madison Street. Behind that is a vertical sign for the Wan Lee Laundry which was not on this block. Then came the furniture and cabinet maker B.T. Barber at 514 Chartres whose wares may be seen on the sidewalk outside of his storefront.
The Napoleon House was purchased from Joseph Labourdette in 1920 by Joseph Impastato for $14,000 (about $210,000 today). He had been operating the grocery store at that address since 1914. At some point the grocery became a bar and then a restaurant, and Impastato continued to operate it until he retired in 1943 at the age of 58. In 2015 the Impastato family sold the business to Ralph Brennan who continues to operate the Napoleon House Restaurant to this day.

In the early 1920’s Beulah Ledner began baking out of her uptown kitchen on Lowerline Street. Her treats became a fast favorite of Tulane and Newcomb students and faculty, growing her name and baking business beyond the four walls of her home, and into a location on Claiborne. Known as the “Doberge Queen of New Orleans,” Beulah invented the classic Crescent City cake and became a baking legend.
Her bakery made the perfect marriage in 1946 when Beulah decided to sell her retail location and recipes to a man named Joe Gambino. Gambino began operating the bakery, which remained named the “Beulah Ledner Bakery,” and stayed loyal to Beulah’s creations. His pastries and cakes quickly gained notoriety in New Orleans and in 1949 he decided to reopen the bakery under his name, thus becoming “Joe Gambino’s Bakery.” His uptown business quickly expanded, allowing him to open multiple locations throughout New Orleans, into the surrounding suburbs, and eventually spreading into southern Louisiana.
Thriving through the end of the twentieth century, it wasn’t until 2005 that Gambino’s suffered a setback. Hurricane Katrina buried all of the New Orleans locations beneath ten feet of water and Gambino’s was forced to close several of their stores. But the Gambino name persisted through the devastation, reopening stores in Metairie and continuing to serve New Orleanians the cakes and treats they had become famous for.
With almost 100 years of tradition, Gambino’s Bakery has kept craftsmanship and quality as its hallmarks. To this day Gambino’s bakes its pastries and treats fresh daily and it is Gambino’s alone that bakes by hand Beulah Ledner’s original doberge cake recipe exactly. They have made New Orleans flavors and style accessible across the country and continue to bake with passion to make the best desserts possible

About this event
Spend some time in one of the French Quarter’s most beautiful spaces—the salon at Historic BK House. Visit the past through the images and experiences of designers and curators whose work today is informed by historic interiors and decorative arts. New Orleans homes in the 19th century were as fine as any in the county, and those once-fashionable interiors can speak to the present. With presentations on historic materials, decoration, and artistic depiction, guests will gain inspiration for designing their own beautiful spaces in this historic city.
Local interior designers Sweet Dupuy and Eugenie Gibbens will provide ideas and examples of ways to use historic decoration in contemporary design.
Decorative Arts Curator Lydia Blackmore of The Historic New Orleans Collection will share the rich patterns and textures of 19th century New Orleans wallpaper and upholstery shops.
Architectural Conservator and Professor Jane Ashburn will speak on how historic construction methods created the backdrop for 19th-century finishes and why modern methods of architectural conservation seek to preserve these ingenious systems.

Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.
Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us. The Joan of Arc Project will present its 13th annual conference, the Salon de Jeanne d’Arc, on Saturday September 16th from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the Myra Clare Rogers Memorial Chapel at Tulane University (map). (full schedule) The free lectures and presentations by local scholars, authors and artists are open to the public. Drop in for a particular session or stay all day! This year's talks focus on the theme "Journeys with Joan: Spiritual, Historical and Cultural Journeys with Joan of Arc." Topics cover Joan of Arc, her medieval French context, and the French heritage of New Orleans, presented by the Joan of Arc Project, producers of the annual Joan of Arc parade in partnership with the Medieval & Early Modern Studies Department at Tulane University.
DETAILED SCHEDULE WITH SPEAKER BIOS
Presented by the makers of the annual Joan of Arc Parade
- 10:00 a.m. Salon Begins, Welcome Remarks
-
10:00 a.m. “Pilgrimage in the Way of Joan,” by Stephen Binz, Biblical scholar and tour guide. Stephen Binz, a biblical scholar and pilgrimage leader, will describe his recent travels to the sites in France associated with Joan of Arc. His travelogue will include his photography and descriptions of the places associated with the calling, courage, sanctity, virtues, and martyrdom of the Maid of Orleans. As a writer and organizer of journeys to sacred places, Stephen will explore the ways that pilgrimage enhances the travelers’ encounter with Saint Joan as she continues to inspire communities today. See his work at Bridge-B.com.
- 11:15 a.m. “Emmeline in Orléans: The Maid from New Orleans in Orleans, France,” by Emmeline Meyers (2023 “Maid of Honor” for New Orleans)
- 12:15-1:30 Lunch Break outside under the oaks with giant dragon puppet demonstration. Presenting “Adversaire,” Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc’s walking 12-foot tall parade dragon with a 16-foot wingspan! Find out how he is made and see him get assembled and up on his feet. Stay tuned for a link to pre-order from for lunch, pick up a snack from the nearby Boot, or bring a sack lunch.
- 1:30 p.m. “Joan 2031: The 9-Year Novena,” by Catholic author Jaymie Stuart Wolfe. Krewe board member Jaymie Wolfe will present information on the 9-year Novena to St. Joan of Arc that began at the end of 2022. The 600th anniversary of Joan’s death (1431) in 2031 inspired Catholic philosopher Thibaud Collins to call for an extended spiritual campaign for the renewal of faith in France. Each year focuses on one of St. Joan’s nine virtues. Learn how you can participate in this spiritual journey of contemplation and find out everything you ever wanted to know about this traditional prayer form from our resident Krewe Catholic expert!
- 2:45-3:45 p.m. “French on Shifting Ground: Land, Language, and Place,” by Tulane University professor and author Nathalie Dajko. Professor Dajko will teach us about the history of the French language in Louisiana—from native peoples to Cajun and Caribbean immigrants—and how their journey of language and loss reflects the environmental erosion that is central to our state’s story.
- 4:00-5:00 p.m. “Joan of Art: The Journey of Creating Joan.” Local artists who have work on display in our 2023 Joan of Art show, as well as past exhibitions, will converse about what it’s like to make art inspired by Joan of Arc, what they learned by creating their work about her, and how her image has evolved over the years to reflect the time and place of artists portraying her.
- 5:00 p.m. Salon ends

September Writers’ Clinic:
The Elements of Fiction; Point of View
METAIRIE – Two local writers will make presentations for other writers on Saturday, Sept. 16 at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 W. Napoleon, Metairie.
The sessions – for beginners or experienced writers – are free of charge and open to the public.
There is no registration.
9:30 a.m. - Christie Cognevich, PhD – Elements of Fiction
Christie Cognevich, PhD, a member of the staff of the Jefferson Parish Library, will discuss the main elements of fiction – setting, character, plot, conflict, and style.
She has an MFA in creative writing for children and young adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts (2022). She is the author of the YA non-fiction books Depression: Insights and Tips for Teenagers (2020) and Dealing with Stress: Insights and Tips for Teenagers (2022), both published by Rowman & Littlefield. In addition to her non-fiction work on mental health, she writes YA fiction, picture books, and poetry.
Cognevich holds a doctoral degree in English literature from Louisiana State University, and she taught English literature and writing for more than a decade. Her scholarly specialties include Romantic and Victorian poetry. Her doctoral thesis focused on the late-eighteenth-century British sonnet revival and poet Charlotte Smith, who was one of William Wordsworth's early inspirations. In addition to Cognevich's published work in scholarly journals such as Essays in Romanticism, she has done extensive archival research and received fellowships to the Armstrong Browning Library at Baylor University to study its collection of Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett Browning papers and the Lilly Library at Indiana University to study its collection of Sylvia Plath papers.
11 a.m. - David Armand – Point of View
David Armand, assistant professor and writer-in-residence, Department of English, Southeastern Louisiana State University, Hammond, will discuss point of view, the “eye” or narrative voice through which a writer tells a story. When one writes a story, a decision must be made to determine who is telling the story, and to whom they are telling it.
Armand serves as associate editor for Louisiana Literature Press. In 2010, he won the George Garrett Fiction Prize for his first novel, The Pugilist's Wife, which was published by Texas Review Press. His second novel, Harlow, was published by Texas Review Press in 2013. David's third novel, The Gorge, was published on October 1, 2015, by Southeast Missouri State University Press, and his poetry chapbook, The Deep Woods, was published in September 2015 by Blue Horse Press. David's memoir, My Mother's House, was published in March 2016 by Texas Review Press. He is currently working on his sixth book, The Lord's Acre, as well as a second memoir and a collection of poetry.

Friends,
Please join me at 10 a.m. Monday, September 18, at St. Louis Cathedral to remember Dr. Alfred E. Lemmon, Director of the Williams Research Center, who died on August 26.
A eulogy will be followed by a Catholic mass, with additional remarks by members of the cultural community. The cathedral memorial will be presided over by Father Patrick J. Williams. To honor Alfred’s decades of scholarship and service to the New Orleans music community, there will be selections performed throughout the memorial by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra String Quartet, OperaCreole, and Dr. Michael White, as well as cathedral musicians Sarah Jane McMahon and Jesse Reeks, organist. A musical prelude will begin approximately 30 minutes prior to the mass.
Immediately following the cathedral service, all are invited to celebrate Alfred’s rich life and profound work at a reception and program hosted by The Historic New Orleans Collection at the Williams Research Center, 410 Chartres Street.
Everybody at The Historic New Orleans Collection joins you in grief over Alfred’s passing. Join us on September 18 to share our love and respect for a friend and colleague.

Philip Melancon
Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.
Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.
See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

Final Four Rematch: LSU WBB To Face Virginia Tech in SEC/ACC Challenge
Story by Zack Nagy
© Provided by LSU Country on FanNation
LSU will host Virginia Tech in a Final Four rematch on November 30 at 8 p.m. CT as a part of the ACC/SEC Challenge.
The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.
LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.
Related video
Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).
Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.
LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.
The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.
LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
