While the U.S. and Canada celebrate National Coffee Day on September 29, other nations mark this day throughout the calendar. International Coffee Day happens just two days later on October 1. The International Coffee Organization has pledged to help struggling coffee farmers worldwide make a living wage.

WHEN IS NATIONAL COFFEE DAY 2023?

The caffeine beverage that keeps us going is celebrated on National Coffee Day on September 29.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL COFFEE DAY

The history of National Coffee Day seems a bit, well, cloudy. We believe September 29 came about as a jolting reminder to get back to work following a long summer — even though it’s a full week after the first day of fall. After all, Americans have turned procrastination into an art form.

On the other hand, the history of coffee itself clearly goes back to 15th century Yemen. (Check out Dave Eggers’ recent book for a fascinating look at how it all went down.) As for Europeans, they got their first taste about 100 years later — with Venice leading the way. Per the National Coffee Association, it wasn’t a smooth ride: “Some people reacted to this new beverage with suspicion or fear, calling it the ‘bitter invention of Satan.’ The local clergy condemned coffee when it came to Venice in 1615. The controversy was so great that Pope Clement VIII was asked to intervene. He decided to taste the beverage for himself before making a decision, and found the drink so satisfying that he gave it papal approval.”

Mainland Europe’s first official coffeehouse (no, they didn’t serve lattes) opened in Venice around 1645.

Back in the U.S., if it weren’t for the Boston Tea Party in 1773, Americans may never have swapped tea for coffee. When the colonies revolted against King George III’s hefty tea tax, tea was out and coffee was in. Things really started to percolate in the mid 1800s when brothers John and Charles Arbuckle started selling coffee to cowboys in the American West. James Folger successfully introduced coffee to gold miners in California. Upon returning to San Francisco in 1865, Folger became a full partner of The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills — which eventually became the J.A. Folger & Co. in 1872.

Other brands including Maxwell House and Hills Brothers soon entered the coffee market. A yearning for “speciality” coffee took hold in the 1960s. PEET’s began offering a variety of coffee in 1966, and a little Seattle company called Starbucks changed everything in 1971. Today the U.S. coffee shop market has grown to a $45.4 billion industry, according to Allegra World Coffee Portal’s 2019 Project Café USA report. Dry coffee sales topped $9 billion in 2017 in the U.S.

  • Circle K is giving away one free cup of coffee of any size through its app until October 2, with the offer valid at more than 7,000 US locations.
  • Dunkin’ is offering members of its loyalty program, Dunkin’ Rewards, a free medium hot or iced coffee with any purchase on Friday.
  • Krispy Kreme is doing one better: Completely free coffee! Any customer can get a medium hot or iced coffee, no purchase necessary. The chain recently revamped its coffee with “better beans, smoother blends and richer roasts for fresh, delicious flavor,” it said.

Get your fall fix at these New Orleans coffee shops

by: Bella Dardano

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — You don’t have to wait until the holidays to put that pumpkin on your porch, and you definitely don’t have to go to Starbucks to get your pumpkin spice fix.

While the Louisiana temperature hasn’t quite dropped yet, coffee shops across the New Orleans area are getting into the fall spirit with drinks, treats and even cocktails inspired by the season.

WGNO asked local coffee shops what they’ll be serving this fall. Here’s what they had to share:

Cherry Coffee Roasters

This Uptown coffee shop is serving up a few coffee options, including an Oatmilk Pumpkin Pie Latte that uses pie spices to bring the pumpkin pie flavor, Mexican Hot Chocolate or Spicy Mocha, a Cinn City Punch, an Apple butter martini, a Pumpkin Spice White Russian, a Splash of Cinn, pumpkin cranberry bread and maple bacon scones.

About the Exhibition

In 1776, many colonists made a great leap to a new idea: maybe they could do without monarchy and aristocracy. If they could unite with one another, “the common people” of the colonies might form a more equal society and government. American Democracy: A Great Leap of Faith, a traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service, examines the continuing evolution of America’s experiment in a government “of, by, and for the people.” The exhibition will be on view at The Historic New Orleans Collection from June 17, 2023, to October 8, 2023. Admission is free.

Drawn from the permanent exhibition of the same name at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, American Democracy explores the challenges and triumphs that generations of Americans encountered as they sought to create a government based on the sovereignty of the people. It explores the history of citizen participation, debate, and compromise from the nation’s formation to today.

Featuring engaging multimedia experiences, immersive design, and artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution, state historical organizations, and The Historic New Orleans Collection, American Democracy demonstrates that self-government relies on every citizen’s active participation in the quest to form a “more perfect union.” Exhibition sections explore the origins of American democracy, the changing identity of eligible voters, the machinery of democracy, the right to petition and protest beyond the ballot, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

American Democracy is sponsored locally by the 2023 Bienville Circle, J.P.Morgan Private Bank, and WDSU-TV.

A companion exhibition, “Yet She Is Advancing”: New Orleans Women and the Right to Vote, 1878–1970, is on view through November 5, 2023. Expanding on a 2020 virtual exhibition on THNOC’s website, the exhibition tells a decades-long story through objects, images, documents, and interactive displays—and through the words of the New Orleans women who for nearly 100 years persisted in their struggle to obtain the vote

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 15.25
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp 10.95
  • Crabmeat 9.95
  • Chicken 6.95
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese 9.50

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

This one-of-a-kind celebration pays tribute to the empowered group of women who stormed the Sazerac Bar in 1949 demanding equality and a stiff drink. A ladies-only three course luncheon

Complimentary welcome beverage

Cash bar

Live entertainment

Juried best-dressed competition

Following the Blue Room festivities, our Reigning Spirit of the Sazerac will lead attendees in a second line to “storm” the world-renowned Sazerac Bar, where the spirited day continues with Sazerac cocktails in-hand.

Ladies are invited to dress in post-war New Orleans style, such as hats, veils, peep-toe shoes and gloves. Doors to the world famous Blue Room open at 12:45pm, and the celebration begins with the traditional ladies lunch at 1:00pm. Live entertainment will be provided, and the event will feature a fashion show showcasing vintage styles with a best-dressed competition.

The LPO is excited to once again provide the music for the New Orleans Opera production of The Marriage of Figaro

Taking place over a single day in Count Almaviva’s estate outside of Seville, Spain, Susanna and Figaro, servants of the Count and Countess, plan their wedding. When Figaro learns that the Count has tried to seduce Susanna, he sets out for revenge.

With Susanna, The Countess, and the count’s page, Cherubino, Figaro concocts a plan of deception and manipulation to ensnare the Count in his scheming. Although the Count tries to retaliate with his own daring plan to marry Figaro off to another, much older woman, his plan laughably falls to pieces when the true identity of the older woman is revealed. Fortunately for Figaro and Susanna, the day ends with peace between the Count and Countess, finally making it possible for their own marriage to proceed.

Laugh and cry with these lovable Louisiana ladies who are “as delicate as magnolias but as tough as steel" as they support each other through the challenges of life.

This tear-jerking comedy is set in a beauty salon in the fictional northwestern Louisiana parish of Chinquapin, based on the writer’s hometown of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and the death of his sister. The play spans three years in the lives of Truby, Shelby, Annelle, M’Lynn, and Clairee, whose heartaches and hilarious attitudes pay tribute to southern women’s survival skills. Experience the eternally relevant 1987 Broadway hit drama that became a beloved movie in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacClaine, Olympia Dukakis, Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton, and Darryl Hannah. With country fried quips such as “I’m not crazy—I’ve just been in a very bad mood for forty years,” “I have a strict policy that nobody cries alone in my presence,” and “Don’t try to get on my good side—I no longer have one” …you will cry, laugh, and be Southern comforted by these warm, wise women.

On September 29 we celebrate National Biscotti Day. Biscotti is one of the oldest biscuits originating from Europe. This oblong cookie leaves you wanting more of its delicious crunchiness. Biscotti is enjoyed as a cookie, with a meal or a cup of coffee; dipped, dunked, or dry. The Italian cookie has evolved and now comes in several flavors: almond, cappuccino, pistachio, pine nuts, raisins, and so forth.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL BISCOTTI DAY

You can get biscotti anywhere and enjoy it however you like. Biscotti is ideal for you if you’re a vegetarian or on a diet. The primitive form of biscotti was originally Roman. Re-emerging in Tuscany, Prato, biscotti is derived from the Latin word ‘biscoctus,’ which means ‘twice-baked.’ The double baking allows the biscuit to be dry and less perishable. Due to its durability, biscotti was stored to be eaten by travelers and warriors.

Due to Tuscany’s plethora of almond groves, the initial recipe of biscotti was tweaked to include unroasted almonds. Biscotti is also referred to as ‘Cantucci,’ however, this also refers to the various imitations of the original recipe in Tuscany.

Biscotti is also associated with Palm Sunday, as ‘currutacos’ (biscotti with almonds) are used as ornaments on the palm leaves given to the worshippers in the capital of the Spanish region, Garraf.

The people of Tuscany enjoyed the cookie dipped in a sweet wine called Vin Santo, the perfect match for the biscuit. This wine is considered the only perfect match for biscotti. It is also used as an ingredient in some Catalonian dishes, enjoyed in rice and sardines, and onion sauces. In one Spanish region, it is used as an ingredient in the sauce prepared for turnip-stuffed duck.

Biscotti found its way to America thanks to Christopher Columbus, who had used it as food during his voyage. Biscotti didn’t remain the same, as it was modified and enjoyed in different ways that we can appreciate now. We can eat the cookie with tea, coffee, cold chai, or in parfaits.

What does "eloquent" mean?

Articulate

eloquent /ˈɛləkwənt/

Definition: Fluent or persuasive in speaking or writing.

Origin: The word "eloquent" comes from the Latin word "eloquens," which means "speaking out."

Example: The lawyer's eloquent closing argument convinced the jury of his client's innocence.

Articulate is a synonym for "eloquent" that emphasizes clarity in communication. To be articulate is to express oneself with precision and coherence, using language effectively to convey meaning. While eloquence is more focused on persuasiveness and fluency in speech or writing, being articulate involves not only being able to express oneself clearly, but also being able to listen carefully and respond thoughtfully. An articulate person has a way with words, but also has the ability to communicate effectively in a variety of situations, whether it be in a professional setting or in a personal conversation.

1900: Roller Coaster at West End

The amusement park at West End (circa 1900) featured a roller coaster that ran along the length of a wooden pier out into Lake Pontchartrain. West End was a popular resort for New Orleanians, along with Spanish Fort and Milneburg Hotels, theatres, gardens, outdoor concerts and dances, and of course the amusement park drew visitors who also engaged in swimming and water sports.

This was not the first roller coaster in the city. In 1883 there was a small roller coaster installed on the corner of St. Charles and Josephine Street that offered two rides for five-cents every day from 4:00pm until 10:00pm except Sundays. There was also one installed as part of the World Industrial & Cotton Centennial Exposition in 1884 that was later auctioned by Hoey & O’Conner in 1886 along with a wide variety of other “unclaimed exhibits” that included platforms, counters, showcases, portable ovens, hollow ware, circular saws, and a merry go-round.

Also offering roller coaster rides as part of the attractions were the White City Amusement Park (1909), Stock’s Scenic Park (1910), and Spanish Fort (1913) which all pre-dated the Zephyr at Pontchartrain Beach.

1907: Charity Hospital Ambulance

The Charity Hospital ambulance, circa 1907 (NOPL). The sign on the building that reads "McEnery Administration" refers to Samuel D. McEnery who was governor of Louisiana from 1881 until 1888. He was also appointed an associate justice in the Louisiana Supreme Court and served as a US Senator from 1897 until 1910.

When would it affect me?

Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers released a timeline that projected when drinking water would be impacted by the salt intrusion.

According to those projections here is when areas of Jefferson Parish could be impacted:

  • Gretna: Oct. 24
  • West Jefferson: Oct. 25
  • Westwego: Oct. 26
  • East Jefferson: Oct. 29

From drinking and bathing to watering plants, here's what to know

By GABRIELLA KILLETT

As if heat, humidity, hurricanes and the eroding coastline aren't enough, the New Orleans area is now threatened by a saltwater wedge inching up the Mississippi River, potentially contaminating the source of drinking water south of Lake Pontchartrain.

First things first: There's no need to panic. The wedge won't reach water intakes in New Orleans' urban core for weeks. The wedge is moving upriver at about 1½ miles a day.

.

  • By GABRIELLA KILLETT

Still, residents are wondering what will happen then. Here are some answers.

Is it safe to drink?

When the salinity of the river rises where government systems draw water for purification, it will be too high to be processed by the human body. That could make you sick, and even lead to kidney failure.

However, the Army Corps of Engineers is arranging barges to deliver 36 million gallons of uncontaminated river water daily for use by local utilities.

How about pets?

Animals that consume salty water also can fall ill. Consuming excess salt could cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Lawns and plants?

In many cases, salty water can kill plants, especially in environments typically dependent on fresh water. Lawns and pets will need rain or other sources of fresh water to thrive.

Bathing?

This is OK. Showering or bathing in salt water can even have health benefits, including loosening muscles and soothing skin.

What about plumbing?

Over time, high salinity can damage plumbing, appliances, cooling systems that use water and water heaters. The best source of information for specific equipment is the manufacturer, vendor or service provider, the Louisiana Health Department says.

Dishwashers? Clothes washers?

Dishwashers are known to process high levels of sodium chloride. But appliance experts also say salt can damage a machine's water softening abilities and clog its salt tank. Check with the manfacturer for specifics.

Clothes-washing machines can function normally, but excess salt can lead to residue on clothes.

Washing cars?

Saltwater can damage vehicle paint and metals, which can lead to rust and erosion. If you wash your vehicle at home, use bottled or treated water as salinity levels rise.

Will it affect our fish?

Freshwater fish have varying levels of adaptability to saltwater. Anglers in the Mississippi River must be flexible, and be aware that saltwater fish might be moving upriver with the wedge.

What do we do now?

Don't panic. There is no shortage of bottled water nationally, so local officials urge people who live upriver of the wedge to stop buying extra.

"The people that really need it in Venice and other parts of Plaquemines are having a hard time getting water," said Patrick Harvey, Plaquemines Parish's emergency preparedness director.

DOTD announces opening of new I-10 west flyover ramp into MSY

Kenner, LA – The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) announces the upcoming opening of the newly constructed I-10 west flyover ramp at Loyola Dr., which will provide direct access to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).

The new ramp is scheduled to open to the public on Friday, September 29, 2023.

“Opening this ramp with direct access to the airport is a great accomplishment and will be helpful to many travelers of this corridor, both going to the airport and everyday users,” said DOTD Secretary Eric Kalivoda. “We look forward to opening the second ramp in the near future.”

Gilchrist Construction, the prime contractor on the project, moved up an estimated mid-November opening date for the I-10 west ramp due in part to the dry weather throughout the summer.

The opening of the new ramp marks the first significant step toward the completion of the $125.6 million I-10/Loyola Drive Interchange Project, ongoing since 2020, which improves interstate, local, and airport traffic flow through the Kenner area. As a design-build project, contractors, designers, and consultants work together to minimize costs and delays.

The ramp avoids traffic lights by passing over the Loyola/Veterans Blvd. intersection and descends to integrate into Terminal Dr., the new four-lane divided highway that serves as the entrance to the airport. At the end of the ramp, drivers will follow airport terminal signage to their destinations.

The next major step in the project's opening will be the second flyover ramp, which will allow exiting airport vehicles to merge directly onto I-10 east toward New Orleans. This second flyover ramp, adjacent to the first, is estimated to open approximately two weeks after the first, weather permitting. Both ramps join in a single structure in the middle of Terminal Dr., just south of Veterans Blvd.

Opening both ramps will dramatically increase traffic flow efficiency in and out of the airport and ease congestion off the Loyola Dr. exit. The Loyola Dr. exit has served as the main entryway to the new airport since the new airport opened in 2019.

In addition to the ramps, auxiliary lanes will join I-10 between the Williams Blvd. (LA 49) and Loyola Dr. exits. These extra lanes widen I-10 to four lanes in each direction, thus easing congestion and allowing airport traffic to have less of an impact on interstate traffic.

The final step will be opening the state's first diverging diamond interchange (DDI). Currently near completion, the DDI will improve traffic flow by eliminating the need for left turn signals at the Loyola Dr. and I-10 interchange.

The full project, including both ramps, the widening of I-10, and the DDis estimated to be completed in the first half of 2024.

PLAYMAKERS’ WANTS YOU TO GET YOUR TICKETS

FOR INTO THE BREECHES! OPENING THIS WEEKEND

The 2023-24 Playmakers Theater season begins with a WWII era comedy interwoven with Shakespeare’s Henry IV and V – of course, women play all the roles. Well, almost. Into the Breeches! is directed by Merry Antoon assisted by Naomi Lee Shawn-O’Donnell. The show runs Sept. 30-Oct. 15.

The New Orleans WWII Museum is collaborating on Breeches!, a masterful blending of a story about women taking the stage to take their minds off their husbands “over there” with soaring Shakespearean dialogue including the rousing “Band of Brothers” speech. In an interesting twist, the script, written to take place in Rhode Island, allows localization and Playmakers has employed a local historian to update the script to take place in WWII-era New Orleans.

To set the Forties ambience, the theater lobby will be decked out with WWII era posters and actual newspapers announcing the Pearl Harbor raid, the declaration of war and the Allied invasion of Europe.

Playmakers’ season tickets are now on sale for all six shows for $150 on BonTempsTix.com or individual tickets for Into the Breeches! which runs Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. are available for $20, also at BonTempsTix.com.

Into The Breeches is supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council, as administered by the St. Tammany Parish Commission on Cultural Affairs. Funding has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

THE DOOKY CHASE KITCHEN: LEAH’S LEGACY cooking series celebrates Leah Chase, the “Queen of Creole Cuisine.”

The 26-part cooking series, produced by WYES-TV in New Orleans, was shot on location at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant with dishes prepared by younger generations of the Chase family who have led the restaurant since Leah’s death in 2019.

Viewers will meet Leah’s grandson, Edgar “Dook” Chase IV, who now oversees the restaurant’s kitchen; her niece Cleo Robinson, who joined Leah in the kitchen in 1980; and the restaurant’s newest chef, Leah’s great-granddaughter Zoe Chase. Paired with some of the menus are specialty cocktails crafted by Leah’s granddaughter Eve Marie Haydel, the restaurant’s beverage manager who has updated drink recipes from the restaurant’s earlier days. Granddaughter Chase Kamata narrates. Each 30-minute episode explores a new take on Creole classics and a different chapter of the restaurant’s history.

See it every Saturday at 10am and on Sundays at 11:30am. Watch on WYES-TV and stream on wyes.org/live and on the WYES and PBS Apps. Out of WYES’ viewing area?

Tune in Saturdays at 1pm. The original 26 episodes of GREAT CHEFS OF NEW ORLEANS will air on WYES, followed by other episodes of the multi-part series every Saturday.

Thanks to executive producer John Shoup for sharing the series (produced and directed by the late John Beyer) with us.  Krewe de Pink Prom is a fun-filled prom night for adults organized by Krewe de Pink, a local, all-volunteer, non-profit. The purpose of the event is to raise funds to support breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Research and provide a space for survivors, supporters and their friends and family to celebrate their victories over the disease.

Krewe de Pink’s annual Prom takes place on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at the Generations Hall in New Orleans, LA. Dressed in their favorite Prom styles or pink bling, attendees will enjoy a night of live music, a unique auction, fun raffles, a dance performance and a special tribute highlighting Breast Cancer Survivors who attend the event.

For many, this is a chance to relive or reinvent prom night by taking Prom photos and dancing the night away in the spacious and beautiful Generations Hall. New Orleans’ own Crescent City Soul will keep the dance floor full with Disco, Funk, Jazz, Motown, R&B, Salsa, and more from the 1960’s to present-day.

This adult (21 & older) Prom night is a cash bar event featuring Krewe de Pink’s 2023 Cocktail Contest winner’s specialty drinks. Attendees may bring along snacks and favorite party food items for their table.

The Krewe de Pink Prom auction has a variety of items to bid on including New Orleans Staycation packages, jewelry, artwork and one-of-a-kind hand decorated costume bras. Raffle prizes include a wine barrel, a beer bucket, a Lotto ticket bundle and there will even be a chance to win the title of Krewe de Pink Prom Queen or King 2023!

The Pussyfooters will show their support for the cause with a special performance and a Breast Cancer Survivors promenade will take place honoring survivors present during the event. Those who attend are in for a unique and memorable experience while making a difference for the cause. Krewe de Pink Prom directly supports breast cancer research at Tulane Cancer Center.

The Backstreet Cultural Museum, the local institution dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of New Orleans, will host a celebration to mark an expansion into an adjoining room. On Saturday, September 30, the museum will host an event featuring never-before-seen exhibits and musical entertainment.

The expansion celebration will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can enjoy music spun by the museum’s own DJ Du, while a unique Black Indian performance at 4 p.m. is set to be a highlight of the event. Additionally, Big Chief Victor Harris, known as the Spirit of Fi Yi Yi, will deliver a message to the crowd, underscoring the significance of this expansion.

This expansion celebration comes on the heels of the museum’s first anniversary in its new home, marking a year of continued growth and success. Initially founded in 1999 by photographer Sylvester “Hawk” Francis, a recipient of the 2004 Best Of The Beat Heartbeat Award, the museum has served as a vital showcase for his work and the broader cultural scene of New Orleans. After opening its doors in the Blandin Funeral Home in 1999, the museum has persevered through the years, even surviving the challenges posed by Hurricane Ida, which damaged its former location.

Philip Melancon

Mancini’s music was the soundtrack of mid-century Hollywood. He contributed to over 250 movies and scores of T.V. shows. To name a few: Peter Gunn and The Pink Panther in the 50’s, Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Two for the Road in the 60’s, Darling Lili in the 70’, and Victor / Victoria in the 80’s. The focus of Mancini by Moonlight is the lyrical songs of Mancini. Although this giant of American music was recognized for his sweeping scores, here we feature his songs with lyrics. Moon River, Days of Wine and Roses, Charade, It Had Better Be Tonight and such. It’s a rich library of exceptional melodies coupled with the masterful lyrics of Johnny Mercer, Leslie Bricusse and Jay Livingston.

Mancini by Moonlight: the cabaret, will be performed by the seasoned duo of Heidi and Phil Melancon. Joined to their hips the ever so hip David Cook and Alden Hagardorn.

See you under the twinkling stars of Monkey Hill.

ABOUT NICKEL-A-DANCE

Now in its 30th Year, NICKEL-A-DANCE is a free series of Sunday afternoon jazz concerts that began in 1994, and now take place each Spring and Fall season that is a hit with children, families, seniors and the general dancing public who don’t tend to go to night clubs. It attracts a diverse group of fans that meet on Frenchmen Street to celebrate jazz as America’s original dance music, while listening to the best of today’s classic jazz bands.

"Nickel" offers a weekly dance soirée that is friendly to lovers of all ages, where drinking from a bar is not a central focus of the gathering.

WHAT MAKES "NICKEL" SPECIAL?

New Orleans' longest-running traditional jazz dance series!

A precursor to popular "swing" dancing, the style of dance that accompanies this style of traditional New Orleans jazz is now a rare happening, making the NICKEL-A-DANCE series a delicate and unique weekly gathering among a plethora of live music showcases around the Crescent City.

This season, the series features acclaimed bandleaders from musical families that go back generations in New Orleans Jazz history, over the course of four Sundays.

FALL 2023 LINE-UP:

Celebrate Our 30th Anniversary with Us this Season!

October 1st

Dr. Michael White

& The Original Liberty Jazz Band

Dr. Michael White is a widely regarded clarinetist, bandleader, composer, historian and educator that plays classic New Orleans jazz in the George Lewis style, and has served as guest director for several Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts. He is also a senior professor of language and music at Xavier University New Orleans, and a regular presenter for countless programs at the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

On his musical philosophy, he shares; “I try to teach to my students that one of the values of listening to jazz, especially New Orleans jazz, is not just for the danceable nature and the great music that it is, but also for the lessons it teaches that can be used today; and that is that you have to improvise.”

This evening he presents

the 7-piece Original Liberty Jazz Band!

October 8th

Davell Crawford

Trad Jazz Band

Known as "The Prince of New Orleans," Davell Crawford is an all-around musical sensation as a pianist, singer, songwriter, and performer. Raised in the church, Davell is the grandson of the rhythm & blues star James "Sugar Boy" Crawford, who wrote the New Orleans hit song “Jockomo,” later known as “Iko Iko.”

Davell has been playing piano since he was 7 years old and although he didn't know his grandfather was a musician at the time, the elder Crawford gave him a keyboard when he was 11, and he soon first toured Europe in his early teens.

Like so many New Orleans musicians, Crawford brings a synthesis of styles to his playing, weaving together funk, gospel, and R&B to his piano playing, songwriting and singing. A Steinway endorsed pianist, Davell has released more than 7 albums since 1995 on imprints such as Rounder Records, Basin Street Records, and more. Bill Taylor from Blues Access proclaims that, “Plain and simple, Davell Crawford is one of the most talented musicians alive.”

This evening is a RARE opportunity to experience Davell lead a band

of local legends in a return to some of his early heritage, in this intimate,

dance-able setting!

October 15th

New Leviathan

Oriental Foxtrot Orchestra

The New Leviathan Oriental FoxTrot Orchestra is an American revival orchestra, that performs authentic orchestrations of vintage American popular music from the 1890s through the early 1930s.

In addition to the well-known compositions of jazz and ragtime composers like Jelly Roll Morton, Fletcher Henderson, and Eubie Blake, the orchestra's repertory includes the work of other New Orleans Tin Pan Alley composers such as Larry Buck, Joe Verges, Paul Sarebresole, and Nick Clesi.

Taking its name from the SS Leviathan, a transatlantic ocean liner with a well-regarded dance band at the start of the 1920s, the orchestra was founded in 1972. Their first performance was at Tulane University, presenting a rather tongue-in-cheek concert of "Best-Loved Oriental Foxtrots," partially satirizing the then-current revival of scholarly interest in classic ragtime. They've been together ever since, still recruiting new musicians along the way.

October 22nd

Kermit Ruffins

& The BBQ Swingers

From playing himself in the HBO Series Tremé, to barbecuing outside his bar, Kermit’s Treme Mother-in-Law Lounge, to sitting in with Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,  trumpeter & vocalist

Kermit Ruffins keeps himself busy when he isn’t on stage doing what he does best—entertaining and sharing his love of life with the world.

But he did not come by his gifts easily. Ruffins did his homework and developed his stage persona and musical act by studying artists who came before him. He watched videos of Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway until the tape wore out, cut his teeth busking the streets of the French Quarter, and apprenticed on stages with local legends “Uncle” Lionel Batiste and Danny Barker. While still in high school, he co-founded the Rebirth Brass Band, but eventually left the touring band to return home to the culture he missed so much, launching The BBQ Swingers, now a beloved New Orleans institution.

Some say Ruffins resembles king pops, Louis "Satchmo" Armstrong himself.

Join us this evening for Kermit's first time back at Nickel-A-Dance

in more than 5 years, and you be the judge...!

October 29th

Herlin Riley

& The Crescent City Joymakers

with special guest Shannon Powell!

New Orleans is a drummer’s town. But in this town full of first class drummers, Herlin Riley is “the” drummer. The Baron of the Boom Boom. The Pulse that keeps the life flowing through any body of work.

Born into a musical family steeped in gospel, blues and jazz, Herlin was asked by Wynton Marsalis to join him in New York in 1988 where Herlin stayed for almost 20 years, all the while still maintaining a home in New Orleans.

Today, he still is a regularly featured musician with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, but has since been based back in his hometown when he wasn't on tour with Ahmad Jamal, Dr. John, or Harry Connick, Jr. He lights up any stage with just his presence alone, and always fires up the first class musicians who love to play with him.

+ Plus! "The King of Tremé," Mr. Shannon Powell himself guests for this special installment of Nickel, making for a powerful rhythm fest of a finale to our 30th Year carrying the flame for jazz-dance tradition.

St. Tammany’s big 10 fall flings

BY JESSICA SAGGIO

•Oct. 4-8: St. Tammany Parish Fair

A more than 100-year tradition, the St. Tammany Parish Fair will return to the parish fairgrounds in Covington Oct. 4-8, with the pageant and rodeo queen contest beginning before then on Sept. 23 and Oct. 1, respectively. This year’s fair includes all the familiar favorites: midway rides, the mini farm, JoJo the Magic Clown, 4H exhibits and live performances. On Oct. 6 at 9 a.m., a parade will lead crowds to the official opening ceremony at the Parish Fairgrounds off North Florida Street, but midway rides and fair festivities begin before then.

This year’s fair will have live performances by Patrick Thompson, Highway 190, Isabel Williams, Southern Patriot, Anna and Soul Revival. It will also include a gospel night and Wild West Show the evening of Oct. 5, and a rodeo the evenings of Oct. 6 and 7. The fair will play host to a dance and cheer competition, chicken calling contest, art demonstrations and much more.

For a full timeline and list of events, visit sttammanyparishfair.info. Times vary by day. Weekend festivities require a $5 entrance fee for adults and $3 for children under age 12. Midway ride bands can be purchased between $25 and $30 depending on the day, and the Wild West Show and rodeo require a separate entry fee of $15 for adults and $10 for children.

•Oct. 7: Bluesberry Music & Art Festival

The Bluesberry Music and Art Festival will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Bogue Falaya Park in Covington. The festival promises “a family-friendly celebration of world-class music, art, food and culture with a blueberry twist at every turn” — and will expand this year with a third stage for performances.

The event features art vendors, food trucks, a beer and wine garden, live art demonstrations and an interactive children’s village. However, music will be the main attraction with performances by Kevin & The Blues Groovers, Big 50, Ally Venable Band, Mike Zito and The Band of Heathens. A separate Ozone Songwriters stage will feature up-and-coming talent and a third “River Revival” stage has been added this year to feature gospel artists.

“We look forward to expanding our festival’s musical variety and showcasing even more of the incredible talent we have right here in our own backyard,” said Bluesberry co-founder Sarah Federer.

Tickets to the event are $30 in advance, or $40 at the gate. Children under 10 are free. A VIP package is also available for $90. Parking is throughout downtown and a shuttle will transport eventgoers from the St. Tammany Justice Center. Visit thebluesberryfest.com for more.

•Oct. 14: Wild Things

It’s been a long time coming, but Wild Things officially returns this year for the first time since 2019. The event was canceled in years prior due to COVID-19 safety precautions, but this year, Refuge Ranger Rebecca Larkins said “it feels great to be back.” The free event will take place at the refuge headquarters in Lacombe at 61389 La. 434 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wild Things festival is an event created to celebrate all things outdoors and will feature live music by the Dead End Blues, food, boat and canoe tours, fish casting stations, a children’s activity tent with crafts and face painting, nature talks, live animal presentations, hayrides, target shooting and a “story walk” by the St. Tammany Parish Library.

“This is the one-stop shop to the great outdoors,” said Larkins. “… It is truly a celebration of National Wildlife Refuges where it is our mission to connect people to nature.”

A youth art contest and “Walk for the Wild” 5K will also take place ahead of the event. For more information on those, visit fws.gov/refuge/big-branch-marsh.

•Oct. 13-15: Wooden Boat Festival

The Wooden Boat Festival is back at Maritime Museum Louisiana in Madisonville. A kickoff “Maritime Mania” party will take place Oct. 13 from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. with food, live music by Category 6, a silent auction and pirate costume contest. However, the main event will run Oct. 14-15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. This year’s festival will feature live music on Saturday by Monster Crawfish, Sugar Bomb and Bottoms Up, and on Sunday, the Chase Tyler Band. Food and art vendors will line the event alongside boat displays and a children’s village.

The children’s village will include 30 kid vendors from Market Munchkins, activities from the St. Tammany Children’s Museum, Northshore Robotics, a pumpkin-decorating station, presentations from the Plauche’s Battalion reenactors, a mermaid visit and slides. Music for the kids will be provided by School of Rock, Felix Schafer, the Schafer Family Ensemble and the Northshore American Harpist Society.

Coinciding with the festival will also be the “Quick n’ Dirty” boat building contest where teams work to both build and decorate a boat that will be put to the test at the festival’s parade Sunday evening down the Tchefuncte River.

Tickets to the event are $10 for adults and free for children under 12. Early birds who grab tickets in September only pay $8 at maritimemuseumlouisiana.org.

The music lineup includes performances by the Stacy Weaver Band, Witness, Voodoo Gumbo, Where Ya At Brass Band, Fistful of Flannel, Soul Brass Band, Swingaroux, Home Run Jack, Out Da Box and Caroline Tebbs. Entrance to the fair is free, but rides require a wristband, though prices for those have not been announced.

•Oct. 20-21: Abita Fall Fest

Back for another celebration filled with music, food, drinks, activities and artisanal vendors, the Abita Fall Fest returns at the Abita Springs Trailhead. The event will jump-start with the “Fall Fest After Dark” Oct. 20 featuring live performances by Julian Primeaux, Bon Bon Vivant and Marc Broussard. Food and drink will be available at this music-centric kickoff, but the activities area of the event will not be open. Tickets to the after-dark fest are $20, and children under 10 are free.

On Oct. 21, the festival will be in full swing with a host of vendors, an “interactive circle” with hands-on experiences, a Tiger Tailgate football viewing station and live performances by the Imagination Movers, Gal Holiday, Strange Roux, Tyler Kitchen & The Right Pieces, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Tyler Farr on the main stage. A separate “Trail Stage” will feature Tom Leggett, Lilli Lewis, Cactus Thief, The Stumpgrinders and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town.

There’s plenty for the littles as well in the Kid Zone, including carnival games, face painting, a petting zoo, crafts and pony rides. A special “pumpkin stage” will be in the Kids Zone where the Tchefunky Playground Band will perform, and a magic show, princess party and juggling act will take place. Fun for the whole family is also available at the “Harvest Matchup,” where there will be inflatables, football and archery.

Advance tickets to the main event are $25 for adults, $15 for kids ages 3-10, and free for kids 2 and under. Tickets at the gate are $35. See more at abitafallfest.com.

Symphony on the Lake will take place at the Mandeville Lakefront between Coffee and Carroll streets from 4:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Oct. 28. The LPO will perform works by Copland, Brahms, Britten, Saint-Saens, Duke, Gershwin, Offenbach, Williams, Sousa and others. Food trucks will be on site at this free event, but picnics will also be permitted.

•Nov. 3-5: Ozone Songwriters Festival

One of the north shore’s signature events for up-and-coming talent, the Ozone Songwriters Festival, the festival will host more than 130 local, regional and national music artists who will sing their hearts across four stages. The event features not only musical talent, but songwriting talent. A VIP Showcase will take place Nov. 3 at the Old Rail Brewing Company, with performances by event creator and Grammy-nominated recording artist Greg Barnhill, among others. Tickets for the showcase range from $65 to $130.

The following days will include performances and a songwriter contest where a winner will be selected for a one-song record deal. Specific details about this portion of the event and stage locations have not been finalized yet.

A songwriter workshop will also take place where budding artists can learn the ins and outs of studio recording, social media, engineering and more. The cost to attend the workshop is $40. More information on the workshop will be posted on the festival’s website at ozonemusic.org as details are announced.

“The festival gives new songwriters the chance to be in front of a live audience and have their songs heard, and to gain valuable stage experience, as well as get a reaction to their songs,” said Barnhill. “It’s also a great experience for the audience, for they might just be seeing the next Usher or Taylor Swift.”

•Nov. 10-12: Festival of the Lake

Our Lake of the Lake Roman Catholic Church will again host its annual fair at its campus on Lafitte Street in Mandeville. The free event will run 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Nov. 10-11, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Nov. 12. This year’s Festival of the Lake will include inflatables, a craft market, petting zoo, pony rides, sock hop, baseball mania, games, food, a “doggie dance” by the Northshore Humane Society and a host of live performances.

This year’s music lineup includes Bag of Donuts, Peyton Falgoust Band, Adam Pearce, and Christian Serpas & Ghost Town. Just be sure to bring chairs for the concert.

Activities at the festival will require tickets that can be purchased for 50 cents each. Early bird tickets will be available on the festival’s website at festivalofthelake.com.

•Nov. 11-12: 3 Rivers Art Festival

Touted as one of the largest juried art shows in the region, the 3 Rivers Art Festival returns to downtown Covington Nov. 11-12. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. More than 200 juried artists from across the nation, and world in some cases, will line both sides of Columbia Street featuring myriad artistic mediums.

“We have everything,” said event coordinator Sarada Bonnett. “Woodworking, watercolor, metalsmithing, glass and everything in between. 2D, 3D paintings. You name it, it’s there.”

Artists were vetted from nearly 500 applicants, she said, and the festival has been recognized by Sunshine Artist as one of the best in the country. Artist awards will be presented at a special event on Saturday night.

Live music will feature Crispin Schroeder, Those Olivier’s, The Teche Two, Dr. Ben Redwine, Lake Ragan, Ghost Town Duo, Jude LeBlanc and Jake Gunter.

A tented food court will be set up for patrons, and a children’s village will keep the kiddos occupied with a hands-on dinosaur experience, children’s museum activities and canvas painting. A separate student art contest is also part of the event and winners will be awarded that Sunday at 2 p.m. For more, visit covingtonthreeriversartfestival.com.

The Tigers and Hokies met last season in the Final Four as LSU came from behind in the fourth quarter to clinch a spot in the national championship game. The Tigers trailed by nine to start the fourth quarter but outscored the Hokies by 16 in the final quarter to claim LSU’s first national championship game berth. LSU defeated Iowa two days later for the national championship.

LSU will enter the season with multiple players returning from the program’s first ever national championship team along with a talented list of newcomers that include the nation’s No. 1 rated recruiting class and the top two players from this year’s transfer portal.

Forward Angel Reese headlines LSU’s returners as the defending Most Outstanding Player from the Final Four. She set the NCAA record with 34 double-doubles throughout the season as a dominant scorer and rebounder. Reese led the SEC in both scoring (23.0 ppg) and rebounding (15.4 rpg).

Guard Flau’jae Johnson is another returning starter for the Tigers who earned SEC Freshman of the Year. In her first year of college basketball, Johnson averaged 11.0 points per game and 5.9 rebounds per game. Guard Kateri Poole started in LSU’s final five games throughout the championship run, bringing a defensive physicality to the court while having a knack to knock down big shots for the Tigers.

LSU will also bring back contributors like forward Sa’Myah Smith who was named to the SEC All-Freshman and guard Last-Tear Poa. Both Smith and Sa’Myah played critical and productive minutes off the bench in the national championship win over Iowa.

The Tigers top-rated incoming freshmen class is headlined by guard Mikaylah Williams who was named the 2023 Morgan Wooten National Player of the Year as the top high school player. Forward Aalyah Del Rosario, the nation’s No. 7 rated player, played in the McDonald’s All-American game with Williams and the Tigers also bring in freshmen guard Angelica Velez who was named Tennessee’s Division II-A Miss Basketball and guard Janae Kent.

LSU was active in the transfer portal, adding guard Hailey Van Lith and forward Aneesah Morrow who were ranked No. 1 and 2, respectively, in ESPN’s transfer portal rankings. Van Lith averaged 19.7 points, 4.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds last season, earning AP All-America honorable mention honors while leading Louisville to the Elite Eight. Van Lith and Iowa’s Caitlin Clark are the only two players in the country who averaged at least 19 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists throughout the year. Morrow was a lethal scorer (24.7 ppg) and rebounder (12.2 rpg) at DePaul. Her and Reese were the only two players in the country to rank inside the top 10 in the nation in both scoring and rebounding.
