NATIONAL SPONGE CAKE DAY

On August 23, enjoy National Sponge Cake Day with the quintessential classic of the cake world. This airy queen of teas is the guest of honor, but we get the pleasure of tasting!

One of the trickiest cakes for bakers to master, a perfect sponge stands tall. Another balancing trick for bakers includes maintaining a fine crumb while keeping the cake moist. If you enjoy layering berries and whipped cream, the sponge handles this task beautifully.

The sponge cake is believed to be one of the first non-yeasted cakes.

The sponge cake is thought to have originated in the Caribbean. However, the earliest English printed recipe for sponge cake comes from an English poet and author, Gervase Markham. In 1615 he published a sponge cake recipe in the book The English Huswife, Containing the Inward and Outward Virtues Which Ought to Be in a Complete Woman.

In 2003, the sponge cake played a tiny role in the movie Calendar Girls starring Helen Mirren. In the scene, Mirren's character, Chris, enters a baking competition. However, she forgets she entered, and instead of entering a sponge cake of her own making, she submits a store-bought Victoria sponge cake.

Superdome renovations done; NFL pleased with upgrades

 By Ian Auzenne

It's "dome sweet dome" for the New Orleans Saints and their fans.

This weekend, the Black-and-Gold and their faithful followers will return to a newly- and fully-renovated Superdome during Friday's training camp practice and Sunday's preseason finale against the Tennessee Titans. Superdome officials expect fans to like what they see.

"It'll be the first time fans could be in the building to see the finished renovation," Superdome general manager Evan Holmes told the Louisiana Stadium and Exposition District Board on Wednesday.

According to Holmes the contractor who oversaw the renovation project left the building on Wednesday, the same day NFL officials inspected the changes. Holmes says Superdome workers are making some final touch-ups before the Superdome opens for Friday's practice and Sunday's game against Tennessee.

"Walking the concourse, you probably saw that a lot of the space is already set and ready to go," Holmes said to LSED members, who joined the NFL officials on Wednesday's tour. "We are in full clean and put-back-together mode."

Holmes says the calendar proved to be the contractors' friend in getting the work done ahead of the pro football season.

"We had a much longer timeline to get ready for the season this year than maybe in previous years, so we're taking full advantage of that," Holmes said.

According to Holmes, the NFL tour group was pleased with the improvements and are satisfied with the changes made to Super Bowl LIX's host stadium.

"All indications suggest that we're in a pretty good place right now," Holmes said. "The NFL is happy with the building, both in its current condition after the renovation--they're very excited to see how it operates given what it was back in 2013 in terms of the flow of folks getting in and out--but also just being able to accommodate the scale of the event as it's evolved since 2013 and since we've last seen it."

Friday Night Wine School - The Italian Road Show, Tuscany with Antonio Molesini

Fri Aug 23, 2024 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM CDT Swirl, 70119

Join us for the 8th in our series of exploring the 20 Italian wine regions, where once a month we take a deep dive into a specific region (or two) – discussing the major grape varieties, terroirs, producers and Italian classification system. So, if you adore Italy like we adore Italy, or just want to learn more about one of the greatest wine-producing countries on earth, come along on our journey, we promise it will be a fun, educational and delicious trip!

Each of the 20 Italian wine regions features an array of climates, landscapes, and historical influences making the country home to one of the largest numbers of indigenous grape varieties in the world. The exact number of grape varieties is challenging to pinpoint due to regional variations, local names, and ongoing research. However, estimates suggest that Italy has well over 2,000 native grape varieties. We know that tackling Italy can feel daunting, so in usual Swirl form, we are here to help!

Born and raised in Cortona, a beautiful Medieval village on the eastern borders of the region, no one knows Tuscany like Antonio Molesini. His father and uncles, the Molesini brothers, came here from the Veneto in the 1930s and the town is synonymous with the name. For decades the Molesini Mercato on Molesini Enoteca have been located on the main square, Piazza Republica, the center of commerce in the town since the Etruscans.

Thanks to Antonio, I have traveled throughout Tuscany, from Florence to Sienna, Montepulciano to Montalcino, Chianti to Bogheri, and everything in between. While he has lived and worked in the wine industry in the US for the past 30+ years, his specialty has always been Italian wine and specifically wine from his native region. Needless to say, when it's time to take the roadshow to Tuscany, he's our guy. The only problem with doing a Tuscany tasting, is narrowing down our focus - there is so much amazing wine to choose from! But as Antonio always says, we will sacrifice ourselves for the American people and find 5 delicious wines to show you. I hope you'll join us!

New Orleans: The New Orleans Jazz Museum is more than a building; it is a living embodiment of New Orleans Jazz culture and music in New Orleans. This is due to the vision of one person: Greg Lambousy, Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum.

Through Greg Lambousy and his staff’s efforts, the New Orleans Jazz Museum has become the epicenter of the New Orleans Jazz scene. From festivals like the Danny Barker Banjo and Guitar Festival, Satchmo Summerfest, Jazz on the Balcony, Weekly free Jazz performances, and the most significant exhibits relative to New Orleans and early Jazz history presented in the correct cultural context, the City of New Orleans.

To paraphrase the great Professor Longhair, “When you come to New Orleans, be sure to go see the New Orleans Jazz Museum.”.

Presentation, 7:30 PM, August 23 at the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center, 1225 N. Rampart St, NOLA. Free Admission RSVP preferred to: festguide@gmail

Greg Lambousy is the Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum. Before accepting this position, Lambousy was Director of Curatorial Services for the National World War II Museum. He began his career at the New Orleans Museum of Art and later moved to the Louisiana State Museum (LSM). During his twenty-year tenure at the LSM, Lambousy managed the institution’s collections of more than 500,000 artifacts and other historical items, directed improvements to collections storage at the New Orleans Mint, developed conservation and digitization projects across collections and within the Louisiana Historical Center archives, conducted oral histories and guided the selection and accession of materials related to the State’s history. Since 2016, as Executive Director of the New Orleans Jazz Museum, Lambousy has led the expansion of the Museum in programming, education, exhibitions, international relations, and the development of the Gallatin Street Records label. Visitation has increased fourfold since 2016, and revenues from grants, sponsorships, and events have funded operations, while capital programs have advanced the development of the Museum’s Performance Center and Herb Alpert Education Wing, among other aspects of the Museum’s campus

An eclectic group of adults… playing six mid-pubescents, vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, the tweens spell their way through a series of (potentially made-up) words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout-inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Six spellers enter; one speller leaves a champion! At least the losers get a juice box. [Rated: PG-13]

NATIONAL CUBAN SANDWICH DAY | AUGUST 23

On August 23, we celebrate a sandwich that originated in Cuba, but grew up in Florida. National Cuban Sandwich Day is a tribute to flavor found in a toasted pressed sandwich.

While the Cubano traditionally consists of ham, roast pork, swiss cheese, pickles and mustard on Cuban bread, restaurants and home cooks serve up different versions. While the sandwich alone may serve as a satisfying meal, some very flavorful sides complement this globe-trotting sandwich. Like any grilled sandwich, a creamy, dunkable soup makes the perfect complement.

The sandwich brings together flavor and history, too. By combining traditions from Cuban, German, and Italian immigrants, the sandwich offers a world tour of simple ingredients. If you've never had one, this is the day to try it.

I Grew Up In Louisiana

, New Orleans was “born on the bayou.” Most people think that Iberville and Bienville sailed from the Gulf of Mexico up the Mississippi River until they reached the crescent where they landed and decided to establish their new settlement. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In 1699, brothers Pierre LeMoyne d’Iberville and Jean-Baptiste LeMoyne de Bienville tried but could never find the mouth of the Mississippi River. So they traveled through what is now Lake Borgne into Lake Pontchartrain and explored the entire perimeter of the lake. They eventually came across Bayou St. John and were guided by the indigenous people to the portage road to the Mississippi River. This was the preferred site selected by Bienville, but others wanted to establish the new settlement elsewhere. Iberville lobbied for a site on the northwest shore of Lake Pontchartrain near Bayou Manchac while Father Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, the Jesuit traveler and author, tried to convince Bienville to abandon the site on the Mississippi River to move to higher ground farther upriver.

In the end, Bienville’s decision was final, and the new settlement relied on its connection to Bayou St. John and Lake Pontchartrain until later explorations downriver discovered the mouth of the Mississippi. For many years it was the principal waterway for commercial traffic until it was supplanted by the Carondelet/Old Basin Canal (1794 – 1920s) and later the New Basin Canal (1832 – 1950).

Today there are only two structures that have survived from that time –the Spanish Customs House (1784) and the Pitot house (1799).

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.

Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.

Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.

The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.

One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”

Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!

6-7pm Intro to Swing

For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.

7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level

This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.

Comedy House New Orleans

The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)

CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)

609-610 Fulton St

New Orleans, LA 70130

Mon, August 19

8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

(Entry at 7:30 pm)

The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.

Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.

The list of performers? A total mystery.

The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.

How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.

When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.

Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

University of Holy Cross to hold Constitutional Carry & Self Defense Class August 29

Public confusion still swirls around Louisiana’s new firearm carry laws

New Orleans – The University of Holy Cross, in conjunction with Pierre Basic Guns, is hosting two gun safety and self-defense workshops on its Algiers campus on Thursday, August 29, 2024, to help Louisiana residents and the greater UHC community better understand the nuances of the new constitutional carry laws in the State of Louisiana and how the new laws impact their rights and responsibilities. Sponsored by the United States Concealed Carry Association (USCCA), these workshops are designed to educate the public on the legal aspects of self-defense and carrying firearms.

The workshops will be held on August 29, 2024, with two available sessions: 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. or 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Both sessions will be conducted at the University of Holy Cross Moreau Center, located at 4123 Woodland Drive in New Orleans.

Each session will last approximately two hours and is open to anyone 18 years and older who wishes to deepen their understanding of this significant legal change regarding the legalities of carrying a firearm in public.

“The need for clear and accurate information is greater than ever,” says University of Holy Cross Police Chief and Director of Public Safety Marshall E. Pierre, Sr. “We are excited to host these informational workshops so our community can feel more educated and empowered about self-defense, especially around the subject of carrying firearms.”

Participants will gain valuable insights into their rights and the best practices for responsible gun ownership and self-defense. These sessions aim to empower attendees with the knowledge needed to navigate the legal landscape confidently and responsibly.

The workshops will cover critical topics such as:

  • The implications of being armed in public
  • Staying safe by avoiding danger
  • Pre-threat indicators
  • De-escalation
  • Using force
  • Seeking further training
  • Differences between carrying with a permit vs. without a permit in Louisiana

"I have conducted several of these events, and I've found that many participants are often unaware of the specifics of the law, including what constitutes a justified act of self-defense," says Pierre Basic, founder of Pierre Basic Guns. "One of the most surprising aspects for attendees is learning about the restriction on carrying within 1,000 feet of a school zone without a permit."

To register for a session or to learn more about the workshop series, please contact Pierre Basic Guns at (555) 123-4567 or visit their website at www.pierrebasicguns.com.

2024 SCHEDULE

LSU Football

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.

This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.

  • Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
  • Optional add-ons:
  • Shrimp
  • Crabmeat
  • Chicken
  • Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese

Fun Facts:

  • Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
  • Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
  • Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
  • Our full menu is also available.
  • Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.

We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception.  Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.

Dedicated to maintaining the historical treasure, the annual BK House Soiree in the Vieux Carre’ will take place on Sunday, September 29. Co-chaired by Sarah & Marshall Hevron and Carroll Gelderman Zimmer & Emory Zimmer, proceeds from the festive event will support major restorations to interior plaster and masonry, as well as the BK Endowment Fund.  Tickets start at $100, with various levels available for individuals and sponsors, and may be purchased at www.bkhouse.org.
