NATIONAL COLLEGE COLORS DAY
On the Friday before Labor Day, National College Colors Day encourages everyone to display their team spirit. Across the United States students, parents, family, fans, and alumni will be wearing their team colors. Be sure you're celebrating by wearing your college team's colors and apparel.
Team spirit has long been a foundation of cheering athletes to victory. Wearing the colors of the school as well as singing the school song goes along with the energy of the day. Not only does it bring back memories, but it carries on traditions. Sometimes, these traditions run deep, too.
Support your team and show your team spirit by wearing your college colors to the game or while watching it on TV. Rally the fans and show your team you know they will go for the win! Tailgating and pregame revelry are all part of the enjoyment of the season. Many alumni enjoy share memories of games from years past, especially the close ones, win or lose.

Driving in JP? Might want to let off the gas! New ticket machines issue quick citations
By Courtney P.
If you are living in Jefferson Parish, you may have noticed more cars being pulled over, but it isn't because more officers are on the road.
Technology is assisting JPSO for a more efficient way to ticket; cutting the total time of a traffic stop down, allowing officers to make more stops.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Joe Lopinto says a new machine can print out a ticket in mere seconds allowing officers to initiate more stops.
“The main complaint we get is about traffic enforcement and we have to use our resources for other calls. We got a bunch of new ticket machines and have issued more tickets in the last two weeks.”
This is just one way technology helps out the department.
Lopinto says that his officers are finding more time to move to other calls.
“Instead of an officer spending ten minutes on a call, they scan the license, the ticket prints and goes to the court docket, and they are on to the next call.”

Bunge to infuse $1B in New Orleans area, grow Avondale palm oil facility to biggest in US
CityBusiness staff reports//August 30, 2024//
Bunge, a tropical and specialty oil facility in Avondale, is expanding to offer a broader portfolio of products, increasing employment opportunities by 10 percent and making a significant capital investment into the project. Jefferson Parish leaders say the announcement positions Jefferson Parish as a global destination for food product manufacturing.
Bunge, with registered office in Geneva, Switzerland, and its corporate headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri, is a global leader in agribusiness, food and ingredients, specifically oilseed processing and a producer and supplier of specialty plant-based oils and fat, working in partnerships with farmers.
In April 2023, the company completed the purchase of Fuji Vegetable Oil’s newly-constructed refinery, strategically located in IMTT’s (International-Matex Tank Terminals) Avondale Terminal. The new facility provided Bunge with a scalable, port-based footprint capable of connecting North American food, feed and fuel customers to global markets.
The expansion will include a new vegetable oil processing line as well as additional structures to support increased production at the facility. Bunge currently employs 50 people at the 15-acre plant. The amplified output will require additional employees to be hired at Bunge.

We’ll start with one of the most baffling ones. In case you are not familiar with this idiom, to "bring home the bacon" means to be the top earner in a society or organization, whether in your job or family. Why this particular cut of pork symbolizes earning a decent living remains a mystery.
The origins of this idiom are not completely clear. Many state that it comes from an English tradition that dates back to at least the 12th century, on which a local couple was awarded a flinch of bacon for their devotion. However, most historians agree its modern use comes from a 1906 boxing match between Joe Gans and ‘Battling’ Oliver Nelson: Before the match, Gans' mother sent him a telegram urging him to win the fight and "bring home the bacon".
2Flat as a pancake
Credit: Fa Barboza
This one is rather self-explanatory. One of the defining features of a good pancake (which applies to pretty much all pancakes, given how delicious they are) is its flatness. After all, one of the most enjoyable things to do with a plate of pancakes is to stack them on top of each other before eating a massive multi-layered piece.
In that sense, since this idiom’s meaning is abundantly clear, it is particularly hard to trace back its origins. Most linguists agree it arose simply from common usage, owing to the widespread popularity of pancakes as a breakfast choice.
3Couch potato
Credit: Lars Blankers
The first derogatory idiom in this list, this phrase is typically uttered by disgruntled mothers complaining about their teenager’s lack of physical activity. If you happened to enjoy lazing on a Sunday afternoon indoors watching your favorite movie, then you were at risk of being called a "couch potato" by discontented parents.
This idiom is closely associated with excessive television watching. One possible origin can be traced to a 1979 article published in the LA Times, which talked about "Couch Potatoes who will be lying on couches watching television". Another theory states that the first appearance of this idiom was in a '70s comic book about two anthropomorphized potatoes lazying on a couch.
4Cheesy
Credit: Waldemar
You might think being called "cheesy" would be as derogatory as being labeled a "couch potato", but let’s face it: There’s something charming about a particularly corny, cheesy one-liner. The term 'cheesy' describes anything that is overly sappy or romantic, to the point of being either extremely off-putting or weirdly endearing.
The origins of this idiom are obscure. While we don’t have a definitive answer, some believe that it comes from the 20th century, in which cheap or tacky things were considered appalling and shocking, in the same way that some types of cheese have unpleasant odors.
5Hard nut to crack
Credit: Wouter Supardi Salari
This idiom sounds slightly goofy, doesn’t it? Especially when you consider its meaning, which refers to something particularly difficult to understand or solve. For example, let’s say that Sherlock Holmes leaned over a trail of notes and, after taking a long drag from his pipe, said "This is a hard nut to crack." Don’t you feel this would make the image of the world’s most famous detective a little sillier?
But the truth is, this idiom makes perfect sense: Some nuts are particularly hard to crack open. In that sense, the origins of this idiom seem only logical and are rather hard to trace. However, some believe that the first recorded use of this phrase comes from none other than Benjamin Franklin: Apparently, this Founding Father used it in a letter written in 1755.
6One smart cookie
Credit: Vyshnavi Bisani
Have you ever had some chocolate chip cookies and thought "These are the brainiest and wittiest snacks I ever had"? Of course, you haven’t- no one has. While delicious, cookies are not particularly known for being smart (And for that matter, no food is known for its intelligence), so the origins of the idiom "one smart cookie" are not as clear-cut as we would like.
However, while we can’t give you a definitive answer, most linguists agree that this idiom comes from America during "the Roaring Twenties". According to this theory, the term "cookie" was used to describe someone particularly delightful and sweet, as you would expect from this sugary snack. Therefore, a smart cookie is someone who is not only appealing and lovely, but who also shines through its intelligence.
7Selling like hot cakes
Credit: Luke Pennystan
Is it really surprising that pancakes made it to this list twice? They are the quintessential breakfast comfort food and have evolved into an American cultural icon. Bearing that in mind, this next idiom perfectly capitalizes on pancakes' popularity: Whenever something is extremely successful and profitable, you can say it is "selling like hot cakes".
Apparently, this idiom comes from church bake sales: Known as "hot cakes" or "Johnny cakes", these pancakes sold extremely fast since they were much better eaten hot. This phrase can be traced back to at least the 1830s when it was used in an article published in The Buffalo Bulletin.
8One bad apple
Credit: Priscilla Du Preez 🇨🇦
This one seems to come straight from the world of "Snow White". This fairy tale princess is not the only one who should be wary of apples, at least according to this idiom. You might be surprised to learn that the phrase "one bad apple" is actually an abridged version of another idiom, which states "One bad apple spoils the whole barrel".
This is rather interesting because, in modern times, this idiom is used to signify that the actions of a single individual don’t reflect the actions of the rest: A single "bad apple" is not a faithful representative. However, what’s curious is that this idiom’s original intent seems to suggest the exact opposite, and it rather describes how someone’s bad behavior can influence everyone in a group.
9Have a bun in the oven
Credit: Henry & Co.
This idiom is a rather roundabout way to suggest that someone is pregnant. The imagery is quite clear: In this picture, the "bun" represents the baby growing metaphorically in the "oven" that is a woman’s womb. Should you want to tell someone about a pregnancy while avoiding the ears of a noisy child listening, this phrase is perfect for you.
Curiously, the very first recorded use of this idiom comes from literature. In his 1951 novel The Cruel Sea, British author Nicholas Monserrat uses this phrase to describe the pregnancy of a sailor’s wife.
10Butter someone up
Credit: Nathan Dumlao
We’ll end with what we believe to be the most interesting origin story in this list. The idiom "to butter someone up" means to flatter and treat someone nicely, often with an ulterior motive. At first glance this phrase is utterly flabbergasting: How could covering someone with this greasy milk product award you anything but their contempt? However, many historians suggest it might actually originate from an ancient Indian custom.
According to this theory, many believers throw balls of ghee (a type of clarified butter used in Indian cooking) at the statues of Hindu gods to gain their favor. While this origin has not been completely confirmed, it appears this literal act may have inspired the popular idiom.

NATIONAL TOASTED MARSHMALLOW DAY
On August 30, National Toasted Marshmallow Day celebrates one of America's favorite fire-roasted treats. Be sure to stock up on marshmallows so you can celebrate!
Get your friends together and gather up some firewood. Grab a few long sticks and a bag of marshmallows. Then, make plans for a great night! Toasted marshmallows are a special part of summer evenings around a bonfire. Also, what better way to kick off a long weekend than to enjoy a delicious, warm, gooey, toasted marshmallow? Add a pair of graham crackers and a chocolate bar - and ask for s'more!
Depending upon personal preference, heat marshmallows to various degrees. Some like them gently toasted. Others look for a charred outer layer. Charring a marshmallow is simple. Hold it in the flame until the sugar catches fire. Then, carefully blow it out. It's important not to wave it around as you'll only fan the flames. Marshmallows also come in a variety of flavors and sizes for maximum toasting opportunities. For a fun alternative, try roasting Marshmallow Peeps. Watch them closely as the granular sugar coating will burn more quickly.
Believe it or not, marshmallows date back to Ancient Egypt. The mallow plant provided a sap the Egyptians used to create a candy with nuts and honey.
Ligonier, Indiana holds an annual Marshmallow Festival. It is also the marshmallow capital of the world. How sweet is that?
Homemade marshmallows use sugar, unflavored gelatin, corn syrup, and flavoring.

What is the modern equivalent of the word "lief"?
Angrily
Slowly
Willingly
Sadly
"Willingly" serves as a modern equivalent to the archaic word "lief," which means gladly or readily. While "lief" has fallen out of common usage, "willingly" captures the essence of doing something with eagerness or a positive disposition. It conveys a sense of choice and enthusiasm, suggesting that one is not just compliant but truly desires to engage in an action. In contemporary language, "willingly" is often used to express consent or readiness, making it a fitting replacement for "lief" in both casual and formal contexts, reflecting a similar sentiment of voluntary agreement and heartfelt intention.

John Henry Ramistella know professionally as Johnny Rivers! Born in New York city raised in Baton Rouge! check out the special guest!
1974: FROM THE ADVERTISER.
From Lafayette Memories FB page
JOHNNY RIVERS PLAYS LAFAYETTE MUNICIPAL.
It was on this date, April 12th, that Johnny Rivers played in Lafayette. Here's the after-show write-up from the Lafayette Daily Advertiser of April 13th, 1974:
ADVERTISER CONCERT REVIEW - JOHNNY RIVERS SHOWS CHANGES IN HIS STYLE
By Martha Aycock
Johnny Rivers played a refreshing show last night at the Municipal Auditorium. Interspersed with tunes from his new album, "Rivers", were some of his old ones and a smattering of hits that other people made as well.
Some selections on the program show that country is strongly influencing the singer who made it big by reproducing the rhythm and blues sound of the 50's. Rivers opened the show with "Six Days On The Road", an old truck driving Dave Dudley number. The songs from the album, too, reflect the changes that are going on: "Geronimo's Cadillac," "Gypsy Morning," and something called "Wait A Minute." Gone from these were the Chuck Berry style guitar runs that have become part of the Rivers' sound. The progression is interesting and, ultimately, entertaining. You just have to readjust your ears.
"Redneck Friend," and "Spare Me A Little Bit Of Your Love," led into "Brown Eyed Girl," and old Van Morrison song that was an instant hit both on record and with the crowd last night, as was The Byrds' "I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better When You're Gone."
"Truck Drivin' Man" was the last bit of pure country before Rivers started the medley of his hits, "Summer Rain," The Tracks of My Tears," "Poor Side of Town," "Seventh Son," "Secret Agent Man," "Mountain of Love," "Maybelline," "Midnight Special," "Baby I Need Your Lovin'," "Rocking Pneumonia and The Boogie Woogie Flu," and "Memphis." The old songs sounded fine and made you want to hear more of them.
Rivers introduced the band, a group that kept the music tight from the start of the concert to the finish. Ron Oates was on piano; Jack Williams, bass; Jerry Carey, drums; Richard Bowdon, guitar; Barry Seabold, steel guitar; and Herb Peterson, acoustical guitar.
The only criticism that could be offered during the Rivers concert was that a large part of the audience left before Rivers was through, not even bothering to offer applause. Finally the hand-clapping started but it must have been disappointing to the performers who worked hard to please.
Opening the show were Vince Vance and the Valiants and the Valianettes who were as popular with the audience as was the main attraction.
Remember Danny and the Juniors' "At the Hop"? That was only the beginning as the many-membered group "recalled the glory that was Grease!"
Slicked back ducktails, muscle tee-shirts, highly choreographed numbers and lots of "do do wa's" found their way into the performance and enhanced such solid gold songs as "Come And Go With Me," (You know the "dum dum dum dum DUM dum be dooby" etc.) "Bony Maroni", "Jail House Rock," with a real live Elvis the Pelvis imitation, and Chuck Berry's inimitable "Sweet Little Sixteen." This is one song that was from its very inception, destined as a nostalgic piece. It brings back memories of Dick Clark's American Bandstand, ladies' choices and dances across the whole country.
The era was loaded with pure and simple "good time" music like "Sea Cruise," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Havin' Some Fun Tonight", "Yakkity Yak - Don't Talk Back!" "Shake, Rattle And Roll," "Good Golly Miss Molly," "Johnny B. Goode" and many others. For the weepers there were "I Don't Know Why I Love You Like I Do", and "Tears On My Pillow" (a pain in my heart), "Duke of Earl," and "Silhouettes."
Distinctive of the times, it is apparent now, was the theatricality of dress. Tight shiny pants and sequined jackets, dinner jackets, and special costumes were ready for each number. If he was the "Duke of Earl", well, that called for a top hat and a cape. That's what dukes wore, wasn't it?
Vince Vance and the Valiants didn't leave out many groups that were popular from Little Anthony and the Imperials to Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and early Presley. The group exaggerated the stylizations', but it made for a better show. No one likes to take their nostalgia too seriously.
Though advance, publicity said the show would start at 8 p.m., the curtain actually opened at about 8:45 p.m. which made the audience restive. But both shows were good and worth the waiting.
Lafayette Daily Advertiser 4/13/1974.

New Orleans' Classic Memories: 1718 -1964
Jerrytt Mon
Recallin' Dept. - Some might recall the Anheuser-Busch brewery, which then had a local plant at Gravier and South Front Sts. (now Constance) streets. During the Great Depression (which prohibition ended in '33) went even further in a family-friendly non-alcoholic direction, briefly adding ice cream to its product line. The Anheuser-Busch Ice Cream & Beverage Company Inc., was short-lived, ceasing operation in 1929. It fell into "cancellation/boycott" over the past couple of years from "naughtiness", so to speak. Strange, but true.

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Join the award-winning (1st place, baby!) NOLA Jitterbugs for a 6-week series with live music in the last class!
Our live music classes with local musicians and culture bearers, as well as our overall emphasis on music appreciation is what makes our lessons stand out among the rest!
Starts at The Contemporary Arts Center!
6-7pm Intro to Swing
For total beginners to swing dancing or dancing of any kind. Also for those looking to refresh their basics and learn some ragtime dances. We use these pre-swing era dances to teach beginners how to step on rhythm, step on rhythm while connected to another person, how to connect in order to lead or follow, you'll learn to syncopate your footwork, and then we'll slowly start to let go of one hand and create the beginnings of what will eventually be a bad-ass swing out.
7:30-8:30 Lindy Hop Vocab - Intermediate Level
This class is gonna give you some must know moves, some technique, some philosophy, and of course, we'll continue to clarify and polish up your swing outs.
No partner required to take either of these classes. Come alone or with friends!

Comedy House New Orleans
The most unique comedy show in New Orleans is The Open Mic From Hell, hosted by Chris Trew (as seen on MTV, Comedy Central, America's Got Talent)
CHNO ( Comedy house New Orleans)
609-610 Fulton St
New Orleans, LA 70130
Mon, August 19
8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
(Entry at 7:30 pm)
The Open Mic From Hell is the most unique night of comedy in New Orleans.
Everything about the show is chaotic and unpredictable in the most beautifully hilarious way.
The list of performers? A total mystery.
The jokes they’ll tell? Nobody knows, not even them.
How does it work? Comedians sign-up on the list an hour before showtime. At least 13 names get pulled out of the bucket.
When a name gets pulled they come on stage and make a choice - do they do an entirely new set based on words from the audience, or a special challenge set.
Past challenges have had comics doing their set outside on the street, with noise canceling headphones on, and with a designated heckler in the crowd. We are always adding new, improved, and ridiculous challenges to the show.

It’s Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s Manchac & Middendorf’s Slidell! Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September, handmade paper-thin fettuccine is on the menu.
This mouth-watering dish is served with your choice of classic Alfredo or Marinara Sauce and topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese with optional add-ons of shrimp, crabmeat and chicken.
- Fettuccine with Alfredo Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Fettuccine with Marinara Sauce topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
- Optional add-ons:
- Shrimp
- Crabmeat
- Chicken
- Side of Fettuccine topped with freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese
Fun Facts:
- Our handmade, paper-thin fettuccine was a guest favorite at Bella Luna in the French Quarter. Bella Luna was a fine dining restaurant owned and operated by Horst and Karen Pfeifer. It closed due to Hurricane Katrina and never reopened. The memory of Bella Luna lives on through Fettuccine Frenzy at Middendorf’s. Same Pasta. Same Taste. None of the Fancy.
- Middendorf’s Owner and European Master Chef Horst Pfeifer makes the fettuccine from scratch which consists solely of Semolina flour and eggs. It’s a very time consuming process to make the fettuccine so paper-thin, but it’s definitely worth it.
- Fettuccine is available all day (lunch and dinner).
- Our full menu is also available.
- Uncooked fettuccine is also available for purchase to make a quick meal at home.
We hope you can join us for Fettuccine Frenzy — Every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in September!

The program will run from 10 am to 3 pm, with coffee, a boxed lunch and closing reception. Visit www.bkhouse.org for details.
