Winston Students and Families,

As we head into spring, our campus is buzzing with energy and excitement. We’re looking forward to welcoming families back for our upcoming Spring Showcase on March 19th, a wonderful opportunity for students to share their creativity and learning with our community. Your presence always brings extra joy to these celebrations, and we can’t wait to have you on campus.

This week has been especially meaningful as we hosted several visitors on campus. They were impressed by our students’ engagement and the welcoming spirit that defines our school. Thank you for helping to make our community such a vibrant and supportive place.

With two more marking periods left in the school year, our focus remains on growth, reflection, and connection. Our staff continues to engage in professional development centered around finding joy in what we do each day and continuously improving our instructional practices. Whether through collaboration, classroom innovation, or simply celebrating daily moments of success, we are committed to making every day matter.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership as we move into this exciting final stretch of the school year together.

Warmly,

Kelsey Garrison

Principal

February is a natural time to reflect on relationships—friendships, peer connections, and the ways we communicate and care for one another. This month through Counseling, we focused on relationship skills and social-emotional learning (SEL) to help students build confidence, connection, and self-awareness both in and out of the classroom.

Middle and high school relationships can be exciting, confusing, and sometimes stressful. Throughout February, SEL Advisory lessons and individual conversations targeted skills such as:

  • Clear and respectful communication
  • Empathy and perspective-taking
  • Recognizing, respecting, and setting healthy boundaries
  • Managing conflict and repairing relationships
  • Self love, self respect, and self esteem

Families play a powerful role in reinforcing these skills. Simple check-ins like “How are things going with friends lately?” or “What felt hard or went well today?” can open the door to meaningful conversations. Validating your child’s feelings—even when problem-solving comes later—helps build emotional safety and trust.

To support you at home, here are a few helpful parent resources related to adolescent SEL and relationship skills:

  • Understood.org – Articles and tools designed specifically for families of students with learning and attention differences https://www.understood.org

  • Child Mind Institute – Resources on friendships, emotional regulation, and teen mental health https://childmind.org

  • CASEL (Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning) – Family-friendly explanations of SEL skills and how to support them https://casel.org

As always, the Winston counseling team is here to collaborate with you. Please feel free to reach out if you have questions, concerns, or would like additional support or resources.

Thank you for all you do to support your child’s growth—academically, socially, and emotionally.
