Earlier this week, Head of School Mary Sterling-Torretti shared the following news with our staff, students, and parents:
Dear Winston School Community:
I am writing to formally announce my retirement as Head of School at the Winston School, effective June 30, 2024.
My heart has been with Winston since I responded to an ad in the San Diego Union-Tribune for a teaching position in August of 1989.
In Winston's early years, I was part of the team that developed the initial high school curriculum, the bid for WASC accreditation (Western Association of Schools and Colleges), and later, the first A-G course approvals allowing Winston students to be eligible for admission to the California State University and University of California systems.
While I have held various positions over the years, I am most grateful for the opportunities I have had to contribute to the academic and personal growth of countless students and young professionals and to collaborate with such a talented group of educators and staff. I am also proud to have been part of a dedicated team that has set the stage for a decades-long vision as we embark on our schoolwide modernization project, enabling us to serve our students in a re-imagined campus.
The investment in Winston's future will continue in the capable hands of Kim Kanetis, our new Executive Director, and Kelsey Garrison, who will take on the new role of Principal.
Although I am retiring from full-time responsibilities, I will remain to assist in ensuring a smooth transition during the 2024-2025 school year. I am committed to making this period seamless for Kim, Kelsey, and the School.

Thank you for your continued support and commitment to Winston. Together, we look forward to a bright and promising future.

A Message from our Incoming Executive Director, Kim Kanetis
I am grateful for the opportunity to work with Mary Sterling-Torretti for the last 15 years. I've seen firsthand how her impact and legacy touches every corner of the School, improving the lives of countless students, graduates, and staff over her 35 years of dedicated service. Mary's legacy doesn't stop at Winston. Her mentorship and training of educators now working outside of Winston has woven her wisdom into the fabric of San Diego County's special education system, positively impacting students far beyond our walls. There is no better day here on campus than when a graduate returns, sharing their experiences after Winston and the lasting impact of this program Mary was so integral in creating.
I am honored to continue this tradition as the School's Executive Director, beginning July 1. This summer will be busy, not only with our exciting construction project and highly regarded summer school, but with planning our fall opening - invigorated, hopeful, and ready to continue our program as the premier San Diego school for students with learning differences.
As Executive Director, I am pleased and proud to announce the promotion of Kelsey Garrison to the role of the Winston School Principal. Kelsey brings experience, dedication, and positive results as an effective, compassionate leader and educator. Her promotion is a natural progression from her current, successful role as Assistant Head of School and will provide continuity and stability for families, students, and staff.
During the last week of School, students will have the opportunity to honor Mary's leadership.
As we celebrate Mary's remarkable career at Winston, we invite you to share your warm wishes, accolades, and congratulations. Your messages will be compiled into a special tribute to honor Mary's legacy and dedication to the Winston School community. Click here to join in the tribute!
Congratulations, Mary! I look forward to your continued involvement and support of the Winston School (and hearing about your travel adventures!).
~ Kim Kanetis
| | For the last field trip of the school year, the 8th graders headed on an exciting field trip to Cabrillo National Monument this week. The students explored the monument's rich history and natural beauty, learning about the famous explorer Juan RodrĂguez Cabrillo and his voyage along the California coast. They also enjoyed breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, visited the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse, and discovered the diverse marine life in the tide pools. This hands-on experience brought their classroom lessons to life, fostering a deeper appreciation for history and the environment. The trip was both educational and memorable, leaving the students inspired and eager for future adventures. | | Relive the magic!
