At Winston, we believe every student deserves the opportunity to discover what they can do and who they can become. The Annual Fund helps us open those doors, creating more opportunities for our students and enhancing the experiences that make Winston feel like Winston.

Every gift to the Annual Fund goes directly to this school year, for your students. It's what allows us to say yes. Yes to field trips that change a lesson into an experience. Yes to professional development that supports our teachers to keep growing alongside your kids. Yes to sports, clubs, activities, and more that give students a place to belong outside the classroom. Yes to the extra materials and small classroom moments that don't show up on a tuition bill but show up in your student's day.

This is one of the most impactful ways to invest in your child's Winston experience; the return shows up this year, in their classroom, on their team, and in the hands of the teachers who know them best.

We hope you will say yes with us.

Your support makes a difference. We look forward to having you join us!

Every gift opens a door.

“Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead, don’t miss the rehearsals.” ~ Nora Ephron

As we begin Marking Period 2, it is a good time to reflect on a key factor in student success: consistent attendance. Every day at school provides students with instruction, practice, collaboration, feedback, and connection to their teachers and classmates. The routines students establish now set the tone for the rest of the year.

Research consistently links high attendance rates to higher academic performance. In addition to consistent attendance, arriving on time and remaining through the final bell are also important. When students do not attend classes regularly, they miss instruction, opportunities to ask questions, group activities, teacher feedback, and important class discussions. At Winston School, we fully understand the complex reasons impacting attendance and that illnesses, family responsibilities, and medical appointments sometimes make partial and full-day absences unavoidable. Whenever possible, we encourage families to prioritize school attendance and plan vacations and appointments outside of the school day and take advantage of our scheduled early dismissal days when possible.

Here are some proven ways to set your student up for school success:

Create a consistent evening routine. Set a regular bedtime, charge devices outside the bedroom, and prepare clothes, backpacks, lunches, and transportation plans the night before. This reduces morning stress and starts the day on a positive note.

Build in extra morning time. Aim to have your student ready 10–15 minutes before they need to leave. A buffer helps families handle common issues, such as missing shoes, a delayed ride, and forgotten materials, setting up a smooth start to the day.

Talk with your student about why attendance matters. Connect school attendance to your student’s own goals such as: passing classes, participating in activities, maintaining athletic eligibility, building friendships, graduating, pursuing career plans, or improved feeling of well-being.

Address avoidance early. If a student frequently reports stomachaches, headaches, anxiety, conflict with peers, academic frustration, or reluctance to attend, please contact us. The Winston team may be able to help coordinate support with you before attendance declines further.

Thank you for partnering with us to make attendance and full-day participation a priority. Every school day and every minute of it matters for student learning, well-being, and long-term success.

Student-Athletes: Interested in a Basketball Tournament opportunity in Tennessee?

We are exploring the opportunity for our basketball program to participate in the Mustang Athletics Winter Hoopfest in Brentwood, Tennessee, during Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend, January 15–18, 2027. The tournament would bring together mission-aligned schools from around the country for a weekend of competition and connection with fellow student-athletes. Teams are guaranteed at least three games, and the event may include a shared activity for participating students. At this stage, we are only gathering family interest. We would like to know whether students are interested in participating and whether families would prefer to travel together independently or have students travel with a school group and staff chaperones, if available.

Please reply today to the Winter Hoopfest Interest Email from Mr. Weeden, sent earlier this week. This does not commit your family to participating; it will help us determine whether we can move forward and how to best plan travel and support for our student-athletes.

Our juniors and seniors had the opportunity to visit a local college campus yesterday, where they explored one of many postsecondary options. They enjoyed a presentation on the admissions process, toured the campus, met with Disability Support Services staff, and learned about the STEM programs available at Cal State San Marcos. Experiences like these help students connect their current learning to the exciting possibilities ahead.

Our first off-campus lunch was a huge success! Earlier this week, students enjoyed celebrating their ESLR rewards by sharing lunch together at favorite local community lunch spots.

We’d love for you to join us next Tuesday for our first Parent Association meeting of the year!

During this meeting, we will:

  • Share our vision for the Parent Association
  • Discuss opportunities for parent involvement
  • Hear your ideas about building a stronger school community
  • Identify practical next steps for the year ahead

Make WinstonSchool.org a Trusted/Whitelisted Domain

The Winston School teachers and administration send emails to parents throughout the school year, and we want to make sure families receive all these important communications.

If you have noticed that expected messages from the school are not appearing in your inbox, they may have been directed to your Trash or SPAM folder by your email provider. We strongly recommend setting up a filter in your email program to recognize “@winstonschool.org” as a trusted domain in your “Safe Senders” list—also known as whitelisting a domain.

Once this email filter is set up, you will be much less likely to miss an important message from The Winston School!

We’d love to hear from our alumni! Share your story and let us know where life has taken you since graduation—whether you’re pursuing a career, continuing your education, serving your community, or celebrating a special milestone.

Email your update, graduation year, and a photo (if you’d like) to alumni@thewinstonschool.org. Your story may be featured in an upcoming newsletter or on our school social media!
