NO INTERRUPTIONS DAY
No Interruptions Day on the last workday of the year sets aside the day to get organized for the new year by cleaning up your workspace without interruptions.
This is the day set aside for cleaning out emails, tossing long-saved memos, and delegating those tasks that, well, just need to be delegated. Clear out those menial tasks that you dread. Get them finished and cleared off your to-do list.
Everyone's to-do list is different. The very nature of our job dictates what we consider an organized and cleared workspace. One career may be facing new regulations while another looks at all new technology to learn. A day without interruption allows us to focus on big things and small.
However, some people use this day to focus hard on those end-of-year tasks that always seem to slip through the cracks. Often these are the details of work one pushes off until the last minute. And today is that last minute.

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The holidays have arrived in Greater New Orleans, and local law enforcement agencies want to make sure residents get home safely after festive celebrations.
While making your holiday plans, officials with the St. Tammany Parish and St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s offices are reminding residents of their efforts to curb impaired driving throughout the season.
Holiday travel at MSY going smoothly
St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith said his office is participating in the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign and is increasing patrols to “target impaired drivers.”
Smith said the STPSO is also offering free rides home to people in St. Tammany Parish who cannot get a sober ride home.
“If you know you’re going to be drinking alcohol, have a plan. Get a designated driver, call a cab or arrange for a lift from a rideshare company. If you have exhausted all resources and cannot find a way to get home, call the STPSO. We will provide you a safe ride home,” Smith said.
STPSO officials said those who don’t live in the parish can still contact deputies who will work with them to find a safe way to get home.
St. Tammany Parish residents looking to use the service can call (985)-898-2338 through New Year’s Day.
St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne said the St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office is also offering parish residents free rides home this holiday season.
Champagne said anyone who consumed alcohol and needs a safe ride home in St. Charles Parish can call (985)-783-6807 through New Year’s Day.
The St. Bernard Parish Sheriff’s Office is also bringing back its “Holiday Ride Home” program, where parish residents can call the sheriff’s office at (504)-271-2501 for a free, no questions asked ride home through Jan. 2.

What does "heliocentric" mean?
Sun-centered
heliocentric hēlēəˈsentrik
Definition: relating to or measured from the center of the sun as the reference point, or having the sun as the center.
Origin: The word "heliocentric" originates from the Greek words "helios" meaning "sun" and "kentron" meaning "center." It was first used in the 17th century to describe the solar system model where the sun is at the center and the planets revolve around it.
Example: Copernicus proposed a heliocentric model of the solar system, challenging the prevailing geocentric view that placed Earth at the center.
Sun-centered is the answer to the question "What does 'heliocentric' mean?" Heliocentric refers to a system or model that revolves around the sun as its central point. In contrast to the geocentric model which placed Earth at the center, the heliocentric model proposed by astronomers like Copernicus and Galileo revolutionized our understanding of the solar system. The sun-centered model allows for a more accurate explanation of the movement and interactions of celestial bodies. This concept has had a profound impact on the field of astronomy, leading to significant advancements in our understanding of the universe.

Brandon Ingram, Zion Williamson help Pelicans close out a close game vs. Jazz
For the New Orleans Pelicans, blowing big leads has been too common of an occurrence in the first half of the season.
Before Thursday’s game against the Utah Jazz, eight of the Pelicans’ losses had come in games where the team led by 10 or more.
In the second quarter against Utah, New Orleans pulled ahead by 11. New Orleans briefly fell behind in the third quarter, but this time, it was able to find its composure.
The Pelicans survived some uneven moments and beat a middling Jazz team 112-105 at Smoothie King Center.
Brandon Ingram scored 26 points, including 12 points in the third quarter, as the Pelicans picked up their first win on a five-game home stand and improved their record to 18-14.
The Pelicans’ star trio of Ingram, Zion Williamson and CJ McCollum played important parts in ending the team’s two-game losing streak. Williamson notched 21 points and 10 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season. Meanwhile, McCollum buried four 3-pointers on his way to 22 points.

The Secret Language of Birds: How Feathered Friends Inspired Human Speech
Birds have always fascinated humans with their ability to communicate through melodious songs and complex calls. Their enchanting melodies have not only inspired poets and musicians, but they have also played a significant role in the development of human speech. In this blog post, we will explore the intriguing connection between birds and the evolution of human language.
The Melodious Symphony of Birdsong
Birdsong has been admired for centuries, captivating listeners with its beautiful melodies and intricate patterns. Birds use their songs to communicate various messages, including attracting mates, establishing territory boundaries, and warning others of potential dangers. Their songs are often characterized by a complex arrangement of notes, rhythms, and even regional dialects.
Mimicry: The Art of Imitating Birds
Humans have long been fascinated by the ability of certain bird species to mimic sounds from their environment, including the calls of other birds and even human speech. Birds such as parrots, mynas, and starlings are particularly adept at imitating a wide range of sounds, often with astonishing accuracy.
The art of mimicking bird songs dates back centuries, with ancient cultures using bird mimicry as a form of entertainment. In fact, the ancient Greeks and Romans kept pet birds known as "talking birds" that could mimic human speech. These marvels of nature not only entertained their owners but also sparked curiosity about the origins of human language.
The Vocal Learning Connection
The ability of birds to mimic sounds is not a mere coincidence but rather a result of a shared trait with humans known as vocal learning. Vocal learning refers to the ability to acquire new vocalizations by imitating sounds heard in the environment.
While most animals, including non-human primates, can produce vocalizations specific to their species, only a select few possess the ability of vocal learning. Humans, along with certain bird species like parrots, songbirds, and hummingbirds, have this unique ability, which has been crucial in the development of human language.

NATIONAL PEPPER POT DAY
National Pepper Pot Day celebrates a soup with deep roots and a mythology to go with it. On December 29th, explore the flavors and history of the filling dish.
Pepper pot soup is a highly seasoned soup prepared with peppercorns, small bits of meat, tripe, vegetables, and broth. The dish may be more familiar by the name of Philadelphia Pepper Pot because it was brought to the area by people from Africa, the West Indies, and the Caribbean. Colonial Black women served the dish in their homes, the homes where they worked, and in markets. It's considered an early street food by many historians.
One legendary story credits this soup to George Washington's chef. The story goes that during the brutal winter of 1777 and 1778, the Continental Army was camped t Valley Forge on December 29th. George Washington asked the army's chef to prepare a meal that would boost morale and warm the troops. So the chef rounded up some ingredients and called it Pepper Pot Soup. The troops received the meal well and nicknamed it "the soup that won the war."
Though the story may be untrue, it receives some credit for increasing the popularity of pepper pot soup in Philadelphia and earning the dish its other name, Philadelphia Pepper Pot.

Birdsong and the Evolution of Human Speech
The study of birdsong and its influence on human language has provided valuable insights into the evolution of human speech. Researchers have discovered striking similarities between the neural mechanisms involved in birdsong production and human speech production.
Birds, like humans, have specialized brain circuits dedicated to vocal learning and production. These circuits, known as song control regions, are responsible for the coordination and fine-tuning of vocalizations. The similarities in the neural pathways involved in birdsong and human speech suggest a shared evolutionary history and provide clues about the origins of human language.
Cultural Transmission: Birds and Humans
Birdsong is not only a result of genetic inheritance but also influenced by social interactions and cultural transmission within bird populations. Young birds learn their songs by imitating the songs of adult birds, often through a process of trial and error. This cultural transmission of bird songs parallels the way humans acquire language through exposure to the speech patterns of those around them.
The social nature of birds and their ability to learn from one another has provided researchers with further evidence of the link between birdsong and human speech. The similarities in the social learning processes between birds and humans suggest that birdsong may have served as a precursor to the development of human language.
Birdsong: Inspiration for Music and Poetry
The enchanting melodies of birdsong have captivated humans throughout history, inspiring musicians and poets alike. The intricate patterns and rich tones found in birdsong have influenced numerous musical compositions, from classical symphonies to modern-day songs.
Poets have often drawn inspiration from the beauty and symbolism of birdsong. Birds have been associated with love, freedom, and the wonders of nature in countless poems and literary works. The melodic qualities of birdsong have provided poets with a unique source of inspiration, allowing them to capture the essence of the natural world in their verses.
Birds and their enchanting songs have played a fascinating role in the development of human speech. The ability of certain bird species to mimic sounds, coupled with their social learning processes, has provided valuable insights into the origins of human language. The study of birdsong and its influence on human speech continues to shed light on the evolutionary connections between humans and our feathered friends. So, the next time you hear a melodious bird song, take a moment to appreciate the hidden language that has inspired human communication for centuries.

1918: Fire at the Fair Grounds
Fire broke out at the Fair Grounds racetrack in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 28, 1918. That wiped out the grandstand and part of the paddock. The devastation was captured by photographer John Mendes. Initial reports from the State Fire Marshal were that the blaze was intentional. Damage was estimated to be $200,000 (about $4 million today).
Ever optimistic, John Pender of the Businessmen’s Racing Association declared that the damage would not interfere with the opening of the racing season which had been set for New Year’s Day. While the fire was partially covered by insurance, temporary funding was needed to clear the debris and begin construction on a new grandstand.
The fire originated just after 6:00am in the north end of the grandstand where the clubroom for the racing association were located and spread rapidly with a heavy north wind. The fire department did not receive any notice of the fire until 6:30am and dispatched 18 companies from every section of the city to battle the flames.
True to their word, the racing season opened on time on Wednesday, January 1, 1919, with a slightly smaller grandstand that could still accommodate 3,500 spectators.

EVERYBODY’S FAVORITE! Legendary New Orleans sportscaster Hap Glaudi died today, December 29, in 1989. Glaudi attended Jesuit High School in New Orleans, where legend says he financed his high school education from his winnings at the horse track. Glaudi worked on the school newspaper at Jesuit and later parlayed those skills into a twenty-five career at the New Orleans Item. He would become WWL-TV's lead sportscaster from 1964 until 1978, and later he would add radio to his broadcasting skills, working at WWL (AM) on the pre-game and post-game shows for the New Orleans Saints. Outspoken and passionate though he was about the Saints, Glaudi never took issue with even the most opinionated callers...

This year, THE New Orleans holiday tradition is taking it to another level.
“With the Driving Tour and Walking Tour, this will be the biggest footprint Celebration in the Oaks has had since Hurricane Katrina,” said Cara Lambright, City Park Conservancy CEO. “As our largest annual fundraiser, we can’t wait to share this exciting celebration with our community.”
Boasting more light displays, new attractions and the return of the Botanical Garden Walking Tour, the 2022 Celebration will offer a variety of options, and price points, for guests to choose from.
Highlights this year include:
2.25-mile Driving Tour with enhanced displays
Walking Tour with Botanical Garden access and Carousel Gardens Amusement Park rides included
Multiple dedicated Bike Nights
Botanical Garden Dripping Tree, Poinsettia Tree, Historic Train Garden and “Cajun Night Before Christmas”
Carousel Gardens Train, Christmas Tree, Mr. Bingle and free marshmallows and hot chocolate
Holiday-themed Storyland
Iconic LED dinosaurs, flamingos and pirate ship
New exhibits such Toy Land, a 12-foot Dandelion Meadow Display and Winter Wonderland
“We heard the call of the community and challenged ourselves to step it up,” said Julie LaCour, Director of CITO/Special Events. “We know how important this event is to visitors, and we feel confident this year’s final product will make memories for folks that will last a lifetime.”
City Park Conservancy’s annual operating budget is largely reliant on self-generated activities, often weather dependent, and Celebration in the Oaks plays a key role in funding the Park’s continued maintenance and beauty each year, providing nearly 10% of the Park’s annual budget. The public’s investment and attendance at Celebration in the Oaks supports City Park’s success going forward.

130 Roosevelt Way New Orleans, LA, United States, Louisiana 70112
5PM
During the Christmas season, almost every local has made their way through the cold streets of downtown New Orleans to see the lobby of the romantic Roosevelt Hotel.
Faux tree stems wrapped in glimmering white lights stand tall as they hover over guests and nearly touch the ceiling chandeliers. Neighboring the branches are snow-white Christmas trees covered in red ribbons and ornaments. Both decors line the lobby in a perfect, picturesque pattern.
Hence, it isn't hard to understand why Travel and Leisure named the Roosevelt one of the 15 most festive hotels in the U.S. during the holiday season.
“Our hotel guests, New Orleanians and tourists from all over the world come to The Roosevelt at this time of year because it is truly the brightest, most brilliant place to bring out the holiday spirit,” Tod Chambers, general manager of the Roosevelt, said in a news release.
This year, the Roosevelt is bringing back its beloved Christmas tradition on Nov. 28, unveiling 1,600 feet of garland and 4,000 glass ornaments, the hotel announced Wednesday morning.
New Orleans Saints Executive Vice President and General Manager Mickey Loomis will be there to help switch on the ceremonial lighting of over 112,000 lights, the Roosevelt said in a news release.
The hotel will also be offering various options for holiday dining experiences and drink options at the Sazerac Bar and Teddy's Café.
The Sazerac Bar is bringing back their annual holiday drinks, including the Christmas Cookie — a sweet, vodka-based mixed drink — and the Candy Cane, a sugar drink featuring Rumple Minze.

City of New Orleans Encourages Residents to Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to Rebuild Wetlands
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 25 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while preventing them from being placed in landfills. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.
"Every year, our Christmas trees bring light and happiness into our homes, but their significance goes far beyond spreading holiday joy," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "Recycling and placing these trees along our eroding coastline to help rebuild our wetlands will assist in the effort to protect our great city and state for generations to come. This robust tree recycling program is another example of how New Orleans will continue to lead in combatting the global climate crisis while promoting innovative opportunities to create a better, greener and more vibrant community. So far, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. Thank you to our residents who continue to donate their Christmas trees year after year to enhance our coastline restoration efforts."
The program is coordinated by the City's Office of Resilience and Sustainability (ORS) and Department of Sanitation, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) and the Louisiana National Guard.
“We’re bringing attention to the Christmas Tree Recycling Program today because Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are popular days for New Orleanians to buy and decorate live Christmas trees,” said Director of Economic Development Jeff Schwartz. “The City can only accept trees without tinsel and flocking, and we ask residents to please consider this while decorating your tree.”
“While we are making great progress, protecting our natural resources remains more important than ever for New Orleans,” said ORS Deputy Chief Resilience Officer Greg Nichols. "The Christmas Tree Recycling Program is a great way for residents to get involved in the fight to restore our coast.”
Residents are encouraged to place their trees curbside for collection by Department of Sanitation contractors from Jan. 8 - 12, 2024. Trees cannot be flocked, and all ornamentation must be removed before placing them on the curb. Once they are collected, they will be sorted, bundled and airlifted by helicopter and dropped in targeted sections of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge. The City’s goal is to collect 10,000 trees this year.
“The annual Christmas Tree Drop represents a long-standing partnership between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service," said Louisiana National Guard, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Gabriel Ruiz. "It benefits the City of New Orleans and surrounding coastal environment, while also providing valuable training hours for our pilots and crewmembers of the 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment."
“I’d like to thank the residents of New Orleans for sharing their Christmas trees with us each year and making their contribution to coastal restoration," said USFWS Refuge Manager Shelley Stiaes. "Their tradition of donating Christmas trees is helping to rebuild our coastline and build habitat for wildlife."

The other Playoff Semifinal pits No. 1 Michigan against No. 4 Alabama and will be played at the Rose Bowl, which kicks off at 3:30 p.m. (Central), also on ESPN.
Washington (13-0, 9-0 Pac-12) was ranked No. 3 by the College Football Playoff (CFP) Selection Committee in last week's CFP Rankings and it moved up one spot to No. 2 following its 34-31 victory over No. 5 Oregon in Friday's Pac-12 Championship game. After being ranked No. 7 in last week's CFP Rankings, Texas (12-1, 8-1 Big 12) moved up to No. 3 in today's rankings after its impressive 49-21 win over No. 18 Oklahoma State in Saturday's Big 12 Championship game.
Washington, as the higher seed, will be the home team and will occupy the home bench on the west sideline of the Caesars Superdome while Texas will occupy the visitor bench on the east sideline.
This year's Sugar Bowl will be a rematch of last year's Alamo Bowl – Washington posted a 27-20 victory over Texas in that game on Dec. 29, 2022. The two teams have met four other times with the Longhorns holding a 3-2 edge in the series. The first two meetings were a Texas sweep of a home-and-home series (35-21 in Austin on Oct. 5, 1974, and 28-10 in Seattle on Sept. 20, 1975). The other meetings also came in bowls with Washington winning 14-7 in the Sun Bowl on Dec. 22, 1979, and Texas winning 47-43 in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 28, 2001.
Washington will be the first Pac-12 team to play in the Sugar Bowl while schools that are currently in the Big 12 have made 25 Sugar Bowl appearances with an all-time mark of 15-10 (.600). Washington and Texas are the 94th and 95th conference champions to play in the Sugar Bowl in its 90-year history.
The Huskies will be making their second appearance in the CFP – they lost to Alabama in a Playoff Semifinal following the 2016 season, the third year of the CFP. The Longhorns are making their CFP debut this year.
While Washington is making its Sugar Bowl debut, becoming the 52nd school to participate in the game, Texas will be making its fifth appearance in the Sugar Bowl. The Longhorns have an all-time mark of 2-2 in the Sugar Bowl with wins in their first (Jan. 1, 1948, 27-7 over Alabama) and last appearances (Jan. 1, 2021, 28-21 over Georgia).
This year marked the most wins (13) in Washington football's 107-year history. The Huskies have posted 15 10-win seasons. Texas, meanwhile, has recorded 25 seasons with 10 or more victories. The Longhorns' victory record is also 13, set in its 2005 and 2009 BCS Championship seasons.
Washington will be making its 40th overall bowl appearance with an all-time record of 19-19-1. This will be the 59th bowl appearance for Texas; it has an all-time bowl mark of 31-25-2.
Both coaches, Kalen DeBoer from Washington and Steve Sarkisian for Texas, will be making their Sugar Bowl debuts as head coaches – they will become the 103rd and 104th coaches to lead teams into the Sugar Bowl.
Washington will be playing its first game in the Superdome and in New Orleans as well as just its fourth game overall in the state of Louisiana. The Huskies defeated Tulane in Shreveport's Independence Bowl on Dec. 19, 1987, and lost a pair of games to LSU in Baton Rouge (1983 and 2012). Texas will be making its 18th trip to Louisiana – the Longhorns have a 10-6-1 record in the Pelican State with a 7-0-1 record in New Orleans against Tulane, a 1-4 mark against LSU in Baton Rouge and a 2-2 Sugar Bowl record. The Horns are 2-1 all-time in the Superdome (a win over Georgia and a loss to Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl and a 2002 win over Tulane).

LSU Athletics is proud to announce its year-long celebration of 100 Years in Tiger Stadium, highlighted by stadium upgrades, events, storytelling initiatives, and a season-long celebration throughout the 2024 campaign.
Tiger Stadium, one of America’s most iconic sporting venues, first opened its gates on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1924. Since then, the Tigers have won 450 contests in Death Valley, which has been home to two Heisman Trophy winners, four national championship teams, and 12 SEC title-winning squads.
Included in the celebration are several upgrades to Tiger Stadium, including a new videoboard and lighting system, as well as other upgrades designed to enhance the game day experience. Other events and celebrations will be announced throughout the year.
The 2024 home schedule features several marquee matchups, including home contests against Oklahoma, UCLA, and Alabama. Information on the full 2024 schedule and season tickets will be announced in the coming weeks.
One of the most legendary stadiums in all of college football, Tiger Stadium has been called “the best place in the world to watch a sporting event” by ESPN and “the pound-for-pound king of noise in college football.”
Entering its centennial season in 2024, Tiger Stadium has been a cornerstone of LSU Athletics and the Louisiana community for almost a century, hosting numerous NFL superstars, Heisman Trophy winners, and Hall of Famers since its opening in 1924. It serves as a sporting, cultural, and commercial hub for LSU Athletics, which contributes an estimated $500 million of economic activity for the state of Louisiana annually.

Professor Carl Nivale
Welcoming the new marching krewe, Krewe Mosaïque! They have their first parade on January 13th, from Armstrong Park to Ursuline Convent. Your favorite Professor and Grand Marshal Marty Graw look forward to being there!
#Carnival2024 #MardiGras2024 #OurCarnivalHeritage #krewemosaique
https://www.axios.com/.../new-krewe-mardi-gras-parade...
A new walking krewe will debut for Mardi Gras 2024, marching through the French Quarter on Jan. 13.
Why it matters: The event fills in an otherwise parade-free weekend during the weekslong celebration of Carnival in New Orleans.
What's happening: Krewe Mosaïque will march for 12 blocks from Armstrong Park to the Ursuline Convent for the first time.
- This year's krewe will max out at 200 members, and organizers are putting an emphasis on DIY elements, handmade throws and cultural or historical relevance to the city.
- The idea stems from the krewe's founding members preference for DIY costuming and contraption-building.
What she's saying: "Everything is bright and colorful and very unique unto themselves, but when we come together, it's this beautiful experience, like a mosaic," says Krewe Mosaïque founder Terese Aiello.
