Wednesdays in Elul

TODAY

Wednesday, September 18, 25

4-5 PM Outdoors in the Courtyard at UU

Join Hazzan Cindy Freedman

We'll sing some of the rich High Holiday songs, prayers and niggunim.

Elul gives us a month to get prepared before the Jewish New Year starts. It is a time of introspection, a time to look back at the past year, thinking about where we grew and where we fell short. We also begin to look ahead at the new year, thinking about how we want to change. In Jewish rituals, music, chants, and prayers have always been a meaningful and important part of the tradition. Let's join together on Wednesdays in Elul.

Shabbat Kiddush

Potluck Lunch

at Noon

Our move to UU means we have revived a wonderful HaMakom tradition: a sit-down kiddush lunch. Which means we need to jump-start another HaMakom tradition: the potluck with community contributions of dishes that serve at least 10 people.

Think warm! We have an oven available again. Think cool! There's always an appetite for lovely salads. Think about what YOU can bring. We will continue to provide bagels, lox and cream cheese. We are grateful to Gay Block and Billie Parker for their ongoing sponsorship. To sponsor future Kiddush Luncheons, contact Deborahavren@gmail.com

Dignity Drive

Soon after the High Holidays, we will be returning to the beginning of the Torah reading cycle, where we will find these words: “And God created man in his image; in the image of God He created him” (Gen. 1:27).

This concept is behind our High Holiday drive this year. Rather than collecting food, we will have what is often called a “dignity drive,” providing some of the basic necessities of health and hygiene. We’ll distribute bags at our Rosh HaShanah services and ask that you return filled with donations on Yom Kippur.

Your donations will support adults who live in the Safe Spaces pallet homes on the property of the Lutheran Church on Arroyo Chamiso. If we get more than they can use, we'll donate to other shelters.

Start watching sales at your favorite stores now and pick up some of these items:

Socks for men and women; toothbrushes and toothpaste; mouthwash; combs and hair brushes; shampoo and conditioner; lotion and sunscreen; feminine hygiene products; tissues, wipes and hand sanitizer; bar or liquid soap; lip balm; deodorant; razors and shaving cream; bandages, and antiseptic cream.

FRAGRANCE FREE, PLEASE!

Respecting the health and well-being of our members, please refrain from wearing scented body oils and fragrances when attending services. Todah rabah.

We Remember Them

Yahrzeits

Donate to honor the memory of departed loved ones

and support HaMakom

The observance of Yahrzeit is a sacred mark of reverence for the beloved departed; remembering them imparts a dimension of sanctity to our lives as we join together to recite Kaddish at services. Our noble tradition also invites us to kindle a memorial candle at home, and to make a memorial offering in honor of the person who is being remembered.
