HaMakom Continuing Education Presents

In the words of 20th century sage Elie Wiesel:

“GOD MADE HUMAN BEINGS

BECAUSE HE LOVES STORIES”

Presenter: Rabbi Judith Halevy

Tuesday, March 10, 7PM MST on Zoom

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov, writing in the 18th century, understood the power of story, not only to amuse, or even transmit knowledge, but to awaken us from our slumber. For Nachman, stories became the vehicle to transmit the deepest teachings of Torah in a format accessible to us all.

We will begin our evening with an exploration of the foundational kabbalistic story “The Lost Princess”, the story of the perils of our search for the Divine. We will then turn to the masterpiece of Nachman’s thirteen tales, “The Seven Beggars”, each one of whom has a flaw that ultimately leads to redemption.

Rabbi Judith Halevy has studied and taught the stories of Rabbi Nachman for over fifty years, using various means of artistic expression to bring these stores to life. May the stories of Rabbi Nachman help us to return God’s love, through the incredible power of stories.

Jewish Mindfulness Meditation and Hebrew Chanting

Led by

Gabrielle Maisels

Hazzan Cindy Freedman

Thursdays at Noon

12:00-1:15 PM

Location: Library at UU

Jewish Mindfulness Meditation shares the basic mindfulness/heartfulness skills used in most meditation practice, such as, skills that calm and stabilize the mind, develop compassion for self and others, patience, and non-judgment. These skills help to increase our capacities to meet life with greater acceptance, strength, faith, wisdom, joy and love. It can be a practice for increasing both inner peace and inner power.

Hebrew and English chanting and the singing of niggunim (wordless melodies) are also powerful spiritual practices that offer paths to deepen the experience of connecting to ones soul, spirit, and the Divine Presence.

We meet from 12:00 noon -1:15 in person in the library at UU.

All are welcome. No meditation or chanting experience is required and participants do not have to be Jewish. There is no fee but donation to HaMakom of $18 or more per month is suggested. Come with your curiosity, questions and yearnings.

Donate to honor the memory of departed loved ones and support HaMakom.

The observance of Yahrzeit is a sacred mark of reverence for the beloved departed; remembering them imparts a dimension of sanctity to our lives as we join together to recite Kaddish at services. Our noble tradition also invites us to kindle a memorial candle at home, and to make a memorial offering in honor of the person who is being remembered.

INDECENT is the Tony Award-winning drama inspired by the true events surrounding the controversial 1923 Broadway debut of Sholem Asch’s God of Vengeance.

Written by the Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel, INDECENT is seen by some as a seminal work of Jewish culture and by others as an act of traitorous libel. The play charts the history of an incendiary drama and the path of the artists who risked their careers and lives to perform it.
