CARB Proposes Extension of SB 253 GHG Reporting Deadline
The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has announced a proposed three-month extension for the first reporting deadline under California's Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act (SB 253). If approved, companies required to report Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions would have until November 10, 2026, instead of the current August 10, 2026, to submit their reports.
The extension is intended to give businesses additional time after the Office of Administrative Law completes its review of the final regulations. CARB also plans to release limited regulatory revisions during a 15-day public comment period to clarify certain reporting requirements.
For most local businesses, this proposal will not create new reporting requirements. SB 253 generally applies to companies with more than $1 billion in annual revenue that do business in California. However, manufacturers, suppliers, logistics companies, and other businesses in the Roseville area may still be affected indirectly as larger customers request greenhouse gas emissions data to support their own compliance efforts.
Businesses that are subject to SB 253—or that supply companies preparing for compliance—should use the additional time to review emissions data collection processes and monitor CARB's forthcoming regulatory updates.
