Camp Tuscarora 2020 Summer Camp Operations Announcement - Please Confirm Sessions
Sessions Filling Up Fast Due To Shift In Dates

Earlier this week we announced significant changes to our summer camp operations at Camp Tuscarora for 2020.

If your unit was registered to attend a summer program session this year, please check with your Scouting families to determine how changes in dates affect their schedules.

Once you've communicated with your families, please confirm your attendance for summer camp by emailing Sarah.Fernandez@Scouting.org . as soon as possible.

There are sessions nearing capacity as of this morning . Please consider having a back-up/second choice of session dates as well when speaking with your Troop or Pack.

We will do our very best to accommodate your first choice, but are having to fill sessions on a first-come, first served basis so as soon as you have confirmation from your unit please contact us right away with your preferences.
With questions or for more information please contact Sarah Fernandez at Sarah.Fernandez@Scouting.org or 919-734-1714.

If you missed the council-wide email blast announcement with full details and Q&A, you can find that information at this link . Thank you!
Nayawin RaR Lodge News -
Updates From the Order of the Arrow
Virtual Unit Elections, Virtual Camping Nights,
and Ordeal Candidate Extensions
Like everyone else, OA Lodge operations have been affected by COVID-19. Nayawin RaR Lodge leadership and the National Order of the Arrow have been closely evaluating the situation, and as a result have put the following policies and procedures in place to allow the induction process to continue even though units may be temporarily unable to meet in person:

1 Year Extension For All Remaining Ordeal Candidates : National OA has recently voted on giving an extension of 1 year to those elected candidates who haven’t been able to complete their Ordeal. If you were scheduled to complete your Ordeal at Fall Fellowship 2019 or Spring Fellowship 2020 but have been unable to do so, you have automatically been granted a 1 year extension due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Virtual Elections : National OA has given approval for Online (virtual) Unit Elections until July 1, 2020. The Lodge has also approved the use of this election format in order to safely admit new Arrowmen into our Lodge.

The specific process is ultimately up to the Chapters on how best to conduct their elections as they know the situations their units face and how to best address their needs.

The ballot collection method however is universal for all Chapters and that part of the election process will be conducted in the same manner (via Google forms) across the board.

Nayawin RaR Lodge has extended the Unit Election deadline to July 1, 2020 in order to allow Chapters and Units the time required to plan and execute Elections for future Arrowmen. Also, as a very last resort, units that are simply unable to meet and conduct an election prior to that time may opt to hold their elections at Camp Tuscarora summer camp for 2020 only . This option is temporary, only applicable for this year, and should be used only after all other options have been exhausted.

Virtual Camping Nights : the National Order of the Arrow has granted permission for “virtual camping nights” to be counted towards OA camping requirements, as outlined below:

“In light of the extended period of camping restrictions attributable to COVID-19, the following temporary modification is being made to the camping requirements for OA eligibility: Virtual camping (i.e., backyard or solo camping) may be counted toward the required nights of camping for OA election eligibility if all the following stipulations are met :

  • To be counted, all virtual camping nights should be a direct result of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and be part of a BSA unit-organized unit camping event (i.e., multiple members of the unit are involved and camping simultaneously at remote locations).

  • Some form of unit-organized communications should occur either during or immediately following the event.

  • All existing youth protection policies and digital safety guidelines should be followed.

  • No more than 3 nights of virtual camping are to be credited in any month in which government- or council-imposed COVID-19 restrictions are in place.

  • This temporary change is in effect until September 1, 2020.

Additionally, units who previously reported that they had no youth eligible for elections earlier this year may now find that their situation has changed due to the extended deadline for elections. Please note that those units are eligible to hold a unit election for any individuals who were ineligible earlier in the year due to the camping requirement, but may be eligible now that these temporary policies are in effect. This election must be completed no later than July 1, 2020. Units are encouraged to reevaluate their Scouts’ eligibility if applicable and please reach out to your Chapter Advisor to schedule an election.

Spring Events Status - COVID-19 Update
Complete List of 2020 Program Events - Status Updates Below

· Spring Cub Family Weekends and Crossovers : First, we want all of our AOL Scouts to know that we will still be scheduling and holding a big council-wide crossover celebration ceremony for them late this summer to give them the recognition they deserve and to insure that they don't miss out on that once in a lifetime experience. Please help us spread the word!

As for the Cub Weekends, we've reached the sad conclusion that it isn't feasible for us to reschedule these now that camp isn't reopening until July. For our units that were registered and paid to attend these, may choose from the following options:

  • Roll your registration and fees over to 2020 Fall Cub Weekends at Camp Tuscarora. These are scheduled for October 16 - 18, 2020 and October 23 - 25, 2020. (Just let us know and we can automatically roll your reservation over to the new event on our end.)
  • Roll your fees over to 2020 Cub Resident Camp, Cub Day Camp, or Cub Twilight Camp at Camp Tuscarora. (Just let us know and we can automatically roll your fees over to the new event on our end.)
  • Request a refund. (Applied to the CC used to make the original payment and takes approximately 3 - 5 business days.)

· Nayawin RaR Order of the Arrow Spring Fellowship :  We unfortunately will not be able to reschedule this event either given our current time-frame. Current registrants for this event may choose from the following options:

  • Roll your registration and fees over to Nayawin RaR Fall Fellowship scheduled for September 11 - 13, 2020 at Camp Tuscarora. (Just let us know and we can automatically roll your fees over to the new event on our end.)
  • Request a refund. (Applied to the CC used to make the original payment and takes approximately 3 - 5 business days.)

· Introduction to Troop Leadership Skills (ILST) and National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) : Both of these youth training courses will now be rescheduled and held this fall at Camp Tuscarora . We are currently working towards determining the new course dates and are keeping a watchful eye on the ever-changing various school calendars as those will play a big part in the final date determination. Once we've confirmed dates we will schedule and communicate those as quickly as possible. Please be on the look-out for further communication.

· Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) :  We have canceled our spring BALOO course and rolled registrations over to the fall BALOO course, scheduled for September 19 - 20, 2020 at Camp Tuscarora.

· Introduction To Outdoor Leadership Skills (IOLS) :  We have canceled our spring IOLS course and rolled registrations over to the fall IOLS course, scheduled for
November 21 - 22, 2020 at Camp Tuscarora.

· District Pinewood Derbies :  These events have been cancelled for 2020 and all fees paid are already in the refund process to the CC used to make the original payment. (This should show up on your statement within 3 - 5 business days.)

· Nayawin RaR Order of the Arrow Summer Fellowship :  This event has been canceled, and our annual council-wide Camp Work Day will be held in it's place at Camp Tuscarora on Saturday, June 27, 2020.

Please communicate your event preferences ( roll - over registration , refund , etc .) to Sarah . Fernandez @ Scouting . org . Be sure to include the original event registered for, the dates, and the name and dates of the rescheduled event if applicable.

We apologize for any inconvenience the rescheduling and/or cancellation of these events may cause and as always, we thank you for your patience, understanding, and ongoing support during this time as we all continue to navigate through this situation together.

Should you have any questions or concerns not covered here please let us know and we will do our best to answer your questions using the information currently available to us.

On a brighter note, we are happy to report that the Council Service Center and Scout Shop will reopen and resume normal business operations on Monday, May 11, 2020 . We look forward to being of full service to you again at that time and seeing our Scouting families in person!
