A Message from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium West Families,
This week we had the great pleasure of participating in our winter concerts. The children sang beautifully and we were all edified. The study of music is an essential part of a liberal arts education. The term “liberal arts” has taken on a multitude of definitions in modern times. As originally conceived, there were seven courses of study that were said to make human beings free. These were separated into the trivium and the quadrivium. Music was one of these original courses of study. So how extensive should a child’s musical studies be? Aristotle stated that children should “pursue their studies until they are able to feel delight in noble melodies and rhythms, and not merely in the common part of music in which…even some animals find pleasure.” Our children learn to produce good music so they can become, on some level, connoisseurs. Their tastes in music will grow toward those higher forms as they gain experience in those forms. As great as that sounds, I think there is even more to the study of music. I like to think about music as a form of communication that bypasses the brain and communicates directly with the soul. When we listen to substantive music we don’t really understand it cognitively; instead, we feel the ideas internally. As students begin to recognize this and develop “fluency” in this form of communication, they become empowered by way of a whole new way to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty. As this semester comes to a close, let us consider the special place that music holds in a classical liberal arts education.
As I reflect on our music program at Trivium, it is with a heart equally full of gratitude and sorrow that I announce the resignation of Mrs. Karla Cornell as music teacher at Archway Trivium West. Life has its twists and turns, and Ms. Cornell’s life has recently turned her into Mrs. Cornell and is leading her to a place across the valley such that a commute would be unreasonable. Mrs. Cornell has been a fixture at our academy and crowned her time with a series of beautiful concerts delivered this week. She will always have a place within the Trivium community and we wish her well in all her future endeavors. A forthcoming announcement will welcome our new music teacher, who will begin in January.
Heartily Devoted,
Dr. Clay Scott

Your PSO Board would like to express our deep gratitude and appreciation for everyone who supported Snowstorm 2021. You followed along as Buttons came to life and grew through your giving. The spirit of generosity grew so great that Buttons appeared at drop-off to say hello!
Our goal was to join together to give $10,002 to our teachers and staff and WE DID IT! 136 families came together to make this season even brighter. These gifts will be divided among all staff members and distributed as part of the December 24 payroll. May we all celebrate and relish the relationships that we are so privileged to enjoy among the students, families and staff of ATW.
