FRIDAY FLASH

January 6, 2023

A Note from Headmaster Scott

Dear Archway Trivium Families,

The hulking brute of a man was recently released from prison on parole. He carried a yellow passport that he was required to show to the magistrate upon entering any town he visited. This tagged him as a convict—a dangerous man who could not be trusted. He wandered where he could, seeking only a meal for his belly and a pillow for his head. There where a few places where he could earn himself a quarter of a days wages if he worked all day. Even when he earned money, few taverns would feed him and the hotel masters sent him away. He had left the prison, but not the shackles.

The night was particularly cold, even for the late fall. Unable to find a place in the world of men, the brute sought shelter in a kennel. Even there, the dog bit him and chased him out. Without a roof, he settled for a wall and laid himself to shiver and attempt to sleep on the doorstep of the only lighted house in town.

To be perfectly clear, there was nothing in the man’s demeanor or nature that merited human confidence. He was, indeed, a dangerous man. Anyone with a care for his own well-being would be right to avoid the presence of the brute. Fortunately, the bishop, on whose doorstep he found himself, cared very little for his own well-being.

It is in this circumstance that we meet Jean ValJean, a brute who became the epitome of compassion and self-sacrifice. The bishop was the catalyst for this change. Our scholars are not brutes, but, like Jean ValJean, they are captives of their own base appetites as well as to ignorance. They need good instruction to counter ignorance and compassion, examples, and opportunities to practice virtue to elevate their appetites. Furthermore, they need to know that they can start again…and again…and again…as many times as needed in order to get it right. This is a new year—a new beginning. It is a good time to remind ourselves of the value of second chances. In this new year, let us be ValJean, and humbly strive to change our natures for the better. Let us also be the Bishop, and, through pure love, be the catalyst for others. Happy New Year!

Heartily Devoted,

Clay Scott

Community Investment

Thanks to our wonderful new donors that joined us over the Winter Break as we closed out the 2022 tax year. Collectively, our Archway Trivium donor family has now helped us move to 96% of our fundraising goal for the year! We are almost there!! Don’t forget that we still have an incredible giveaway where one lucky Trivium Community Investment donor will be drawn in May to receive a pair of VR goggles, sponsored by Trivium family business Altered Combat (www.alteredcombat.com).

If you have not yet set up a tax-deductible gift to support our school, it’s not too late!! Your giving goes to the HEART of helping to support every operating expense at the school and bridge the funding gap we have as a charter school. We appreciate you! If you have any questions, please reach out to Annann Hong at ahong@archwaytrivium.org or (773) 307-6779.

Tax Credit

In our weekly random drawing through 12/23/2022, Mr. Tunc Aydi and Dr. Zeynep Bostanci (Mabel Aydi ’34 accepting on their behalf) were drawn to win an Amazon FireStick as a thank you for their participation. We will be announcing our Grand Prize Winner in next week’s Friday Flash.

Set up your 2022 Tax Credit before 4/15 for a chance at a $100 Amazon Gift Card sponsored by Trivium family business, Altered Combat! Ask family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, etc. with an AZ state tax liability to do the same, and double each of your entries while also helping us move closer to our Tax Credit goal!! Tax Credits are essential for supporting our Field Trips so the fees to our families are kept as low as possible. They also help support our after-school clubs!

If your child was sent home with a loaner uniform, please wash and return it to the nurse's office as soon as possible.

Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off/Pick-up

With the expansion of Archway and addition of the new building, there are significant changes to the traffic flow for the upcoming school year. Please carefully review the new Archway Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off and Pick-up and reach out with any questions. Taking the time to understand these procedures will help to ensure the safety of our students/staff and a smooth traffic flow.

Carpooling Update: Our east side pick-up lane has had a faster track and will now be our designated carpool lane.

If you have 2 or more Archway ONLY pick-up cards, you will be guided into this fast-track lane for a faster pick-up. Please be sure to have your pick-up cards ready to show our traffic controllers that you are carpooling so they can guide you to the appropriate lane. To maintain the flow of pick-up, others may be directed to the fast-track lane, but carpools will be given priority. Please do not enter the carpool lanes until you are directed to do so.

As a reminder, if you are picking up Middle School students DO NOT ARRIVE to campus before 3:15 PM. This creates significant delays. If you arrive before 3:15, we will ask you to go back into our pick-up lanes and try again.

Please follow the link below to review the DETAILED Archway Traffic Flow Plan and be sure to share this link with anyone authorized to drop-off/pick-up your children.
