A Message from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium West Families,
Today we celebrated our literature and history by dressing up as influential characters from each of those areas of study. Today I have met with Odysseus, Neil Armstrong, and at least 3 of Mr. Popper’s penguins. It was a joyous experience. I would like to share a few ideas about the study of history. I will preface these thoughts by giving credit to Andrew Zwerneman, co-founder of Cana Academy and author of History Forgotten and Remembered. Everything I will write today comes either from his work or from my thoughts on his work; either way, he deserves the credit.
The first place most of our minds go when we consider the value of studying history is that it allows us to learn from our mistakes. This is true. One of the elements of western civilization that has allowed it to develop as it has is its propensity for self-criticism. However, self-criticism is a poor foundation for the development of a civilization. It can tell us what not to do; but focusing on our mistakes cannot tell us what we ought to do instead. For that, we must look to examples of nobility, justice, temperance, and wisdom—in short, we must look for virtue in our past. Frederick Douglass gave us an extremely powerful example of how this might be done.
I base my sense of the certain overthrow of slavery, in part, upon the nature of the American Government, the Constitution, the tendencies of the age, and the character of the American people; and this…I know of no soil better adapted to the growth of reform than American soil. I know of no country where conditions for affecting great changes in the settled order of things, for the development of right ideas of liberty and humanity, are more favorable than here in these United States.
This statement is neither overly critical of the status quo nor did it ignore the obvious, egregious mistake the country was guilty of. His hope for a better future was grounded in the reality of certain specific virtues already present within the imperfect people and imperfect system. He didn’t see historical events and characters as separate from himself. Instead, he saw a continual whole encompassing the past, present, and future, all engaged in one united work of growth and improvement. This is what it means to be part of The Great Conversation that spans space and time. Let us look with sympathy and gratitude on those who came before us to give us our common American heritage.
Heartily Devoted,
Dr. Clay Scott
