A Message from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium West Families,
In a favorite poem, Longfellow observed “our hearts, though stout and brave, Still, like muffled drums, are beating Funeral marches to the grave.” It is true that all of us in this mortal condition only have a limited number of “thump-thumps” in our hearts; we are all moving every day closer to death. Rather than have this thought paralyze us to inaction or lull us into acceptance of nihilism, we can use it, as Longfellow does, to spur us toward excellence. There is no question as to whether we will die or not, but there is a question as to whether we will live or not.
So what does it mean to truly live? How do we maximize our humanity? These are huge questions that have persisted across time, and yet each of us will have to wrestle with them. Socrates famously stated “the unexamined life is not worth living.” An examined life requires the exercise of reason to reflect and thoughtfully consider. This statement could be understood differently by substituting the word “examine” for the synonym “test.” The ability to self-reflect and to assign meaning to the tests we encounter in life are uniquely human. Of all the creatures on this earth, human beings are the only ones to be able to consciously change their nature. Others can be trained to respond to particular stimuli or use their intelligence to solve puzzles or complete tasks. However, the ability to identify a weakness and exert the will to bring about internal change belongs only to the realm of humanity. A vicious person can become virtuous. This is a simple, yet profound statement. It illuminates the possibility of a life well lived. Through dedicated, intentional work we can not only learn things and develop skills, but we can actually become something better. As work our way down life’s road, we could concentrate on the “muffled funeral marches,” but I would encourage us to rather “act, that each tomorrow Find us farther than today.”
Heartily Devoted,
Dr. Clay Scott
