A Message from Headmaster Scott
Dear Archway Trivium Families,
In the fourth grade, our scholars learn and recite “Norman and Saxon” by Rudyard Kipling wherein a Norman Baron gives advice to his son regarding the ruling of the Saxons. Here is one piece:
"But first you must master their language, their dialect, proverbs and songs. Don't trust any clerk to interpret when they come with the tale of their wrongs. Let them know that you know what they're saying; let them feel that you know what to say.”
When I was young, my parents enrolled me in a full-immersion Spanish school. My life has been blessed tremendously by this gift, the gift of speaking another language. Later, while living in The Dominican Republic, I learned that true communication requires so much more than speaking the same language. As the wise Norman Baron understood, speaking someone’s language requires knowing their values, modes of thinking, and history. It means seeing him or her as a complete human being. It means humbling yourself by prioritizing understanding the other person above expressing your own thoughts.
This is one of the powerful benefits of a liberal education. It opens the doors and prepares us to speak the many languages of the world. Have a great weekend!
Heartily Devoted,
Clay Scott, Ed.D.

Enter the 3rd-5th Grade Bard Competition by Monday, October 23
Dear Archway Trivium Scholars and Families,
Throughout Western civilization, bards have been keepers of tradition, reciting the poetry of their people and passing on oral history. Archway Trivium will again be joining our fellow Great Hearts schools in holding a Bard Competition for our 3rd through 5th grade scholars, whom we will challenge to memorize and recite poetry.
Over the course of two rounds and two poems, we will winnow the field to find Trivium’s most skillful bard. That scholar will be named the 2023 Archway Trivium School Bard and will represent our school at the Great Hearts Archway Bard Competition to be held in April 2024.
The Archway Trivium Bard Competition Registration Guidelines and a Registration Form were sent home earlier this week in scholars’ folders. If your scholar wishes to participate, registration forms and poem selections are due to homeroom teachers no later than Monday, October 23.
Information pertaining to each round is as follows and the GH Final will be announced when finalized:
Round 1 Thursday, December 7th during school hours
Round 2 Thursday, February 15th, 2024, Trivium Gymnasium
GH Final April 2024 at the Lund Center on Veritas Campus
Bard participants will be excused from memorizing in-class assigned poems until after their recitations for Round 1. The twelve scholars who progress to Round 2 will be excused until their recitations in February 2024. The school’s winner will be excused from any in-class assigned poems until the final round at the Great Hearts Competition in April of next year.
If you have any questions about the Bard Competition, please contact Ms. Smith at lsmith@archwaytrivium.org.

Save the Date for Literary and Historical Figure Day - November 3
Save the Date for our annual Literary & Historical Figure Day on the half day, Friday, November 3. Late Pick-up Policy
We have been doing very well with our on-campus student pick-up and drop-off routines as of late. Every year, it takes a few weeks for us to settle into a routine so that the pickup runs smoothly. Now that pick-up times are running efficiently, we ask parents to ensure they arrive on time to pick up their students.
We will begin enforcing our Late Pick-up Policy on Tuesday, September 5. Please make sure you are arriving within 30 minutes of the end of school to pick up your scholar in order to avoid being charged a late pick-up fee. Parents arriving after this time will be required to sign out their child from the MPR and may be assessed a $2 per minute, per student late fee. All late pick-up fees will be added to your Configio account and are due upon receipt. For more information, please see page 46 of our Family Handbook.
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - You will be charged from 3:35pm
Wednesday - You will be charged from 1:55pm
Half days - You will be charged from 12:25pm (excludes Half Day Kinder)

School Messenger Communication
Great Hearts and Archway Trivium continue to utilize the system School Messenger for emails, robo-calls, and text messaging to inform families of campus related academy emergencies and other communications. SchoolMessenger has a new automatic opt-in for text feature. During the registration/re-enrollment process families confirmed their wish to participate in text communications. Great Hearts will now automatically opt in contact information given during the registration/re-enrollment process with the options you selected. You will notice at the beginning of July you will be opted in for text messaging. If you would like to opt out of text messages simply reply STOP to the text from 67585. You can also enter the code 67585 with the message STOP to block any text messaging. Please note, if opting out, you will not receive texts regarding emergencies on campus.
Email Communications
If you know of parents who are not receiving these communications, please ask them to check their junk/promotions email folders, and then email bmcdonald@archwaytrivium.org for assistance.
You can also find ALL school-wide communications on our website on the Latest News page.
