FRIDAY FLASH

September 2, 2022

A Note from Headmaster Scott

Dear Archway Trivium Families,

Today I would like to give you all a “peek behind the curtain,” so to speak, and let you see some things from the Headmaster chair.

  1. We have an absolutely amazing parent community. Sure, we’ve had some embarrassing moments (usually involving traffic or athletics), but even in those cases taking time to talk and connect with one another will allow you all to see in each other the awesomeness that I see. Yes, that includes the guy who cut you off in the pick up line.
  2. The word “bully” is overused to the point that it has lost any actual meaning. Throughout my career, when a family insists that bullying is occurring, when the investigation is complete, the child who is bringing the accusation is often discovered to be the instigator.
  3. That kid who yells disruptive and offensive things in class has autism. He is actually a really great kid and means no offence at all.
  4. Charisma is not the key to good teaching. At a previous place of employment, we had a teacher who was so bad we couldn’t fire him fast enough. Unfortunately, he was also very popular with the parents and students. He was also very good at covering his tracks and explaining away his mistakes. This made it hard to fire him from a human resources standpoint. He stayed in the classroom almost 2 months longer than he should have, largely because of his charisma. To this day, families remember that teacher with fondness, completely unaware that he was (arguably) the worst teacher I’ve ever worked with.
  5. There is no “permanent record.” In fact, very little transfers from 5th to 6th grade. If your child gets in really big trouble in 3rd grade, we’ve pretty much all forgotten about it by 5th grade (unless she keeps doing it). Also, grades matter very little. Your child is free to make and learn from all the mistakes he or she needs at this point.

I’m sure there are other things that could be said, but hopefully this will help you have a different way of thinking about things as we navigate our shared pursuit of all things true, good, and beautiful. Thank you all, and please have a relaxing and enjoyable three day weekend!

Heartily Devoted,

Clay Scott

Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off/Pick-up

With the expansion of Archway and addition of the new building, there are significant changes to the traffic flow for the upcoming school year. Please carefully review the new Archway Traffic Flow for Student Drop-off and Pick-up and reach out with any questions. Taking the time to understand these procedures will help to ensure the safety of our students/staff and a smooth traffic flow.

Carpooling Update: Our east side pick-up lane has had a faster track and will now be our designated carpool lane.

If you have 2 or more Archway ONLY pick-up cards, you will be guided into this fast-track lane for a faster pick-up. Please be sure to have your pick-up cards ready to show our traffic controllers that you are carpooling so they can guide you to the appropriate lane. To maintain the flow of pick-up, others may be directed to the fast-track lane, but carpools will be given priority. Please do not enter the carpool lanes until you are directed to do so.

As a reminder, if you are picking up Middle School students DO NOT ARRIVE to campus before 3:15 PM. This creates significant delays. If you arrive before 3:15, we will ask you to go back into our pick-up lanes and try again.

Please follow the link below to review the DETAILED Archway Traffic Flow Plan and be sure to share this link with anyone authorized to drop-off/pick-up your children.
